Baby Fern Lace Stitch: A Knittycat's Knits Tutorial

Video tutorial on how to knit the Baby Fern Lace Stitch (traditional pattern; lacey stitch series)
Level: Advanced beginner or intermediate
Abbreviations: K=knit; K2Tog=knit 2 stitches together; P=purl; SKP=slip 1 stitch purlwise, knit the next stitch, then pass the slipped stitch over the stitch that was just knit; st=stitch; YO=yarn over.
The stitch is cast on a multiple of 12 + 3 sts (eg, 27, 39, 51, etc) and is a 6-row repeat. This stitch is a good one to try for shawls or afghans and looks great with finer yarns and is also fine to use with worsted weight (medium) yarns. The scalloped edge of the fabric may roll inward a bit and could need blocking after completion, but it lays flat for the most part. Highly recommend adding proactive lifelines as you work with any lace pattern (video link below).
Cast on a multiple of 12 sts + 3 sts using cast-on method of your choice (for video demo, I cast on 27 sts using the long-tail cast on method using US size 9 [5.5 mm] needles and used Caron Simply Soft yarn, 100% acrylic, worsted weight [medium]) .
Row 1: P all sts
Row 2: P1, K1, P1, *K2Tog, K2, YO, K1, YO, K2, SKP, P1, K1, P1. Repeat from * to the end of the row.
Row 3: P all sts
Row 4: P1, K1, P1, *K2Tog, K1, YO, K3, YO, K1, SKP, P1, K1, P1. Repeat from * to the end of the row.
Row 5: P all sts
Row 6. P1, K1, P1, *K2Tog, YO, K5, YO, SKP, P1, K1, P1. Repeat from * to the end of the row.
Repeat these 6 rows for the pattern.

Totally agree, Fern! Lace knitting is fun but can also be challenging and prone to mistakes (I've lost count of how many times I wish I'd have put lifelines or paid closer attention while knitting). @@legoffpacret9680 If you mean if the edges will roll inwards, then no, they should not roll inwards with a garter stitch border. You may still need to block the scarf at the end for the lace pattern to show up nicely😊

I love lace too! Can't get enough of it. Nice to know you have many ongoing projects and best wishes for them. I am just wrapping up a swatch of the Fern lace stitch (larger version of baby fern and I think quite pretty and dainty). Hi Marley, thanks for watching and glad you liked it. Yes, I can be worked in the round but you only need to cast on a multiple of 12 sts and omit the "P1, K1, P1" at the start of Rows 1, 3, and 5 (which means you would just start from the *K2Tog... onwards and repeat that to the end of the row). For Rows 2, 4, and 6, you would just do a knit all the way around (instead of purl). Hope this helps and love to hear if you used this stitch for a project knit in the round. Best wishes!
