When Voight (Jason Beghe) answers a report concerning a suspicious duffel bag at the Chicago Lakefront, his shock escalates as he uncovers the body of a newborn infant lying motionless inside the frigid bag.

SPOILERS: For those who haven't seen the episode: the baby was adopted, unofficially, by a family who had a young son. The biological mother, a teenager, didn't want her parents to know or punish her for getting pregnant. The son, not understanding that the cold would shock her, took the baby outside to see the night sky. He didn’t mean any harm, but she was cold by the time the parents realized it. And the parents feared that for not adopting her through official means, all three of them would get into deep trouble - especially their son. The dad dumped her to protect him. When caught, the dad tried to cover for him and confessed to being the one to take her outside in the first place, claiming he fell asleep. But the little boy admitted to it without prompting.

This clip is like 15% of the context of the whole episode. The real reason for the baby being out in the cold is actually pretty sad, voight even understands why it happened and doesn't get angry at the person who did it.

Family is always the first thing law enforcement suspect till they rule out people...because sadly half of the time it is family that did it and they have to look at everyone as a suspect at first

Until they find the culprit, they assume everyone involved might’ve done it and family members are often quite high on the list of suspects as they’re often the ones who commit these acts.

Voight sure felt ouched seeing am abandoned baby in the cold. It's wrong for babies to be abandoned out in the cold, even if they're bundled up. Burgess felt relief to hear that the baby survived the cold.

it's not the thought that is weird, what's weird is that let's say it happens in real life, if you want to give the baby to someone decent, you don't do that, you give it to an orphanage or the church. If you do what they did, the baby dies.

This is why they drilled it into us in Criminal justice training "They're not unalive until they're warm and unalive." Miracles like this actually happen when someone is Frozen alive. I say that line every time we see a frozen body in tv show n my family is still confused.

@@marycanary i have seen it, the babies father was not involved neither was the mother, the baby was sold into an illegial adoption at birth, two weeks later the babies adopted older brother (who was only 7) and was into space and the stars decided to bring his little sister outside at night to see the shooting stars, because it was so cold she became hypothermic, the adopted father and mother panicked and the father put her in the bag, in the end the baby survived, however she is now prone to seizure's. the babies bio mother was found and informed on what happened, she ended up taking her daughter back to raise her, the adopted family was charged with the crime of child endangerment and abandonment, this is just a summery however but long story short the baby girl lives

@@thomasplouffe326 The adopted family was never charged woth anything, but the babies' mother's mom Debrah Myers( I think her name is) was charged with kidnapping the baby due to there not being any official adoption.

The strange thing is this can actually happen. Ten years ago it happened near my home in iowa. A woman wanted for kidnapping was picked up for questioning but did not have the baby with her. The police put out a notice thinking she had abandoned the child somewhere. The temperature fell to almost 40 below that the most of us to feared the worst. The next morning a man at one of the local gas stations found the baby in a plastic storage container out by the garbage. When they Open the container. The baby starts screaming its head off. Somehow it managed to survive in the brutally cold weather for more than 12 hours.

Fun fact; I learned on an episode of “I shouldn’t be alive,” that babies have a defense mechanism such as converting body fat into warmth to preserve life for as long as possible.

The baby was adopted, the adopted brother took her outside to see the sky and when the parents found her, she was cold. They didn't adopt her through official means, so they panicked and placed her back outside in the duffle bag.

The mother was a teen girl who gave birth and she couldn’t take care of it so she gave the baby away for adoption, the adoptive family (it was the father who took her in) had a 6 year old son, who didn’t know much about babies, but he took the baby out to look at the sky not knowing it was too cold for her, then she stopped moving and was frozen. Then his father came out and feared that he killed her. And instead of telling the police/ambulance he was scared they would be charged or arrested, so he buried the baby in a duffel bag thinking she’s dead and no one would find her.

Even though girls can walk into a clinic pretty much anywhere and pick it up for almost nothing, most don't because they either think someone will recognise them there, they don't want the pills be discovered by families (which would lead to questions) or they don't think it's gonna happen. It's sad humanity has demonised sex to be this awful thing that to be avoided at pretty much all costs, to the point where a girl isn't comfortable going into a health clinic and picking up contraceptives.

It’s revealed that the girl who had the baby was forced to give it up for adoption or she would be considered dead to her parents, they gave the baby to a midwife who gave it to another family that had a little boy, the boy left the baby outside in the cold night and the parents (in their infinite wisdom) thought the baby was dead so they left her in the duffel bag. Then the geniuses tried to take the fall to protect their son, but the son spilled his guts, Voight being a father understood so he let them go. The brith mother got her baby back in the end, of course her own parents were arrested for kidnapping their own granddaughter, since the “adoption”wasn’t really legal

And she’s the one who dropped the baby and tried to kill it. It’s all the girls fault and she should be in jail not him, the victim of this situation.

@@zerodragonsaiyen3268 what are talking about? The girl’s mom essentially kidnapped the baby and gave it up for adoption, threatened that she’d be dead to her if she didn’t give up the baby. The reason why that baby ended up there is because the adopted parents were complete idiots

This show is dumb. Outright police brutality and the cops acting like thugs? Any judges ruling on their cases would just throw out the evidence for coercion.
