Got my baby grand for 100 US dollars on Craigslist. Built in New York between 1920 and 1943 from what we could find, in great playable shape, overstrung and overdamped, original mahogany wood, strings, and ivory key tops(RIP poor elephants) no cracked bridges or soundboard, no other visible prohlems, regulated and in tune. Having only taking lessons for a year at the time, the only classical piece I knew was Für Elise (NOT just the one-handed first movement, but all of it, the whole song, left and right hand). So, when we got to the house, from which the owner was moving and needed the piano out of the house, I played that, asked about the piano some, handed over the five twenties, and shook the owner’s hand. From that moment the beautiful piano was mine. We came back a week later, our own little amateur moving crew (me, my grandfather, my stepfather, and a few friends), and moved the piano down 17 STAIRS and halfway across the state, without a scratch and only needing a touch-up! Since then, the piano has been sitting in my back room, played daily, and my pride and joy. It may have only been $100, but the joy in our house is priceless (I successfully learned Moonlight Sonata, currentlylearning La Campanella and Bohemian Rhapsody on it!). And that’s my baby grand piano story! PS: If you read this far without falling asleep, thanks a lot for enjoying my story! Have a great day! Bye

The people that sold it to us said they bought it at an estate sale. They were moving house at the time and couldn't keep the piano so they were selling it. Nobody had bought it for the original price ($350) so they kept reducing it until we bought it. It was definitely a huge stroke of good luck for us.

I probably learned more from you in this 20 minute video than any comparable video I have watched. Excellent !! You: (1) Out-lined the major questions, (2) gave an accurate and efficient overview of each question, along with the major factors that affect those issues (3) Your answers took into account the full range of likely viewers, from experienced musicians all the way down to those of us who deeply love and are fascinated by pianos but will never be in the market to buy. It is obvious that you know so very much about pianos from the detailed differences in their mechanics to the subtle nuances of 'voice' and 'tonality' and how pianos often reflect the culture of where they are manufactured. I thank you so much and encourage you to continue to make more of the excellent videos!!

I enjoyed your talk, Stu--thanks! When you are discussing pianos, it would be great if you could play a given piano for say forty-five seconds or so. If you are doing a basic comparison of a baby grand with an upright, for example, if it would be possible to play a given piece of music on both pianos, it would be helpful to hear the differences even though the pianos sounds might not come across perfectly in a video. Looking at the full Mason and Hamlin grands around your shop might be pine to play them--or at least hear you play one of them! I remember playing some wonderful Mason and Hamlin grands in my college days when visiting a friend of mine at Bradley University (in Peoria, Illinois, FYI). Very attractive sound throughout the full range of the instrument. Would that I were a wealthy person---or even "middle income"--I'd love to snap up one of those big M&H grands! Thanks again for your interesting and informative talk. All the best to you! Mark

Thank you Stu' , not sure if l should have viewed this. It would be like myself explaining which classic car to purchase! One thing l did find, my piano is not double bridged. Now l really don't know what to do! l have been deliberating about changing for some time. However it does have shwander key action.I paid about $750.00 (£500.00)for my 5ft baby grand about 10years ago. I've probably spent about the same amount keeping it in playable condition. I find the humidity plays havoc with the piano or if l don't play it for a period. Many thanks for your knowledge.

Really informative and helpful. Stu's explanations are very good and useful. Do you play piano or can you get someone else to demonstrate, for example, side by side, similar brand or price, size, etc, play same passage of music to compare upright vs. grand, new vs used, different brands with same music and player. This is more work for you, but will be truly enlightening, and I think informative. Demo sample music will be much more effective than the existing background track, which is distracting, too fast, too loud. Stu's informative content really is not enhanced by background music. Thanks very much, however. I am going for a grand, even though I cannot yet take advantage of benefits of faster and more control in the action. Dave

wow, Stu, you really know your way around baby grands. Anyhow, I thought anything over 4'9" was called a Grand piano, tho'. Not that it matters, as the curved shape is generally known as "Baby Grand". I think comments made are quite accurate, as that background music competes with your voice. Can only hear a few things clearly as the video progresses. However, it's great how you explain as much as possible to novices. Thanks for sharing. Next time, less background interference, please.

I have a baby grand Bluethner, made in Leipzig in 1935. I had it completely rebuilt by a master piano technician, using all Bluethner parts and materials in the 1990s. The instrument has a wonderful, sweet tone and a majestic bass resonance, surprising big in sound for such a small grand. Many musicians who have heard and/or played it say that it sounds like a much larger instrument than it is. The sweetness of the tone matters to me, because I like to have a piano(s) for chamber music playing and for accompanying, and the Bluethner and Knabe pianos are considered widely to be the best for that kind of use, blending better with other instruments and with the voice than a behemoth seven or nine foot grand. I also have a Knabe studio upright, from the very last year of piano production in Rochester, N.Y., before the Knabe name was huckstered off to Asia. The studio model enables me to see my musical partner, another pianist, a player of another instrument, or voice, no matter where the other player or singer is located viv-a-vis the piano. Since Knabe and Bluethner have similar tone quality, my two instruments blend very well in two-piano music. I am very happy with the choices that I made.
@gbantock
@gbantock 5 жыл бұрын
The Knabe upright described above is free-standing, not placed against a wall, but rather back-to-"bum" with the grand piano, so that the two pianists face directly across the respective pianos at each other. Thus, the Knabe resonates freely. An upright does not HAVE TO be placed against a wall. Those who have an upright really ought to try out the sound when it vibrates into open space. It makes a big difference.

1. The mix on the music volume is just fine, it's not background music. It's played at a volume so you can really hear. 2. I bought my baby grand instead of an upright because of this video and you're absolutely correct, baby grand is the way to go. I got lucky, with a used piano that was pretty much a gift, but sitting at a baby grand with great tone just can't be beat. I had to toss my couch (now I have just a love seat) but it's totally worth it. I am deliriously happy. You are so right in saying that every day it puts a smile on my face and I didn't spend anywhere near what you paid for yours.

Nice video, very informative. About the upright piano action. I’ve seen examples of upright pianos that include a spiring so that the hammer goes back to its initial position very quickly. As a result these pianos play much like a grand pianos. I wonder why this isn’t standard on all upright pianos?

Most likely, that is because the mechanism is patented.
@itseme4779
@itseme4779 3 жыл бұрын
I'm late but have somewhat of an answer from my technician The spring reverses the touch you'd normally have on a piano/grand. Usually, when you push down a key it gets easier to push further down because it's already set in motion and there's "less" weight to push. A spring makes it so that the weight you need to push down increases while pressing a key, making it more difficult to push it down the further you go Basically, you're ingraining the reverse of what you should into your muscle memory, which gains importance in higher levels of piano playing So that's probably a reason to why it's not standardized

@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 5 жыл бұрын
Between the K500 and GL20, I'd definitely go GL20 if budget and space allow for it. The K500 vs. GL10 would be more of a toss-up for me. The GL20 with the agraffes and thicker frame has a lovely resonance and harmonic complexity that I don't get out of the K500 OR the GL10. I also find the factory prep on the GL20 to be excellent and even out of the box, I find to be better voice than the K series uprights (with maybe the exception of the K800). Hope those thoughts help!

Nice explanation about the Uprights and Grands, but I still have my question: assuming that i have (hipotetically) $10,000, can I get a better Upright and a not so good Baby Grand? or which is the relativeness of the price and model? I mean, can Upright pianos "beat" some Baby Grands (in terms of sound)?
@MerriamPianos
@MerriamPianos 8 жыл бұрын
+toomuchdie Great question - it comes up all the time. If you're talking fit-and-finish, factory prep, materials quality, AND ***you're paying market price***, a $10,000 upright is going to give you a nicer tone. This will probably include a more even scale design, a better sustain, and a wider dynamic range. However, because any grand has an advantage in terms of sheer volume, as well as the obvious aesthetic, it really depends on your priorities. If you're an advanced player, or have a keen ear for tone, I think you'd enjoy the upright better, personally. Thanks, Stu.

You can't engineer 50-60 years of playing into a new piece of wood. ...but then again, I am not personally responsible for selling new pianos, so I can see where that bias is coming from.

Hey Ryan - agreed on one point: you cannot beat the responsiveness of an aged soundboard that's had its fibres loosened over time. And on a violin / cello / bass / guitar (or any other instrument where the amount of pressure on that wood is only a few hundred pounds) that leads to a net advantage over time....i.e. that's why great older string instruments almost invariably sell for more than new ones, as the wood ages and becomes more resonant and the tone becomes more complex. But the issue with pianos is that VERY rarely will you find a 50 year old piano that still has crown and no cracks. I'm not suggesting it isn't possible and a certain percentage of high-quality instruments will age in this manner. But there's a big difference between two tons and 200 lbs, which is approximately the difference in pressure between say, a violin, and a grand piano, and whatever advantage a piano gains with a matured soundboard is often counteracted by the loss of crown. And there is marketplace evidence of this: there are thousands of 50 year old soundboards with no cracks, sitting inside pianos that are practically free...and no one is using them to rebuild anything. I would posit that it's because of the lack of crown, which leads to tuning instability and dramatically reduced tone and projection. And sure, I'm certain that a 'new piano bias' slips out every once and a while :) but I do my very best to keep the info as neutral as I can. I really appreciate the comment and chance to further delve into the whole soundboard issue - look forward to further comments and thanks for checking out the channel!! - stu

@@MerriamPianos But it IS possible to re-crown a soundboard. No, it's not cheap, but excellent results can be attained if this is accomplished. Of course at that point, this hypothetical owner is doing it for sentimental value, or just because they like that piano in particular. They would never get the money they put into it out of it if they ever tried to re-sell it - BUT that doesn't mean they shouldn't do it, or that the resulting refurbished piano wouldn't be a worth-while instrument! I know the overwhelming majority of cheap and free pianos are as good as kindling, but that doesn't mean they all are! Granted, if you need a good piano right now, then yeah, just buy a new piano. Refurbishing old pianos is not something for your average piano buyer, I'll give you that!

So a piano is designed to last ~60 yrs. You can get a 30yr old one for 70 of the price? Am I the only one thinking something is seriously off here? Used stuff should be waaay cheaper than that...

I can’t hear him. The background music is horribly distracting and muddying his words. It is so over dramatic and demanding attention. This otherwise, is very useful and well presented.

The photography and editing don't match the quality of the presentation. Too much jumping around. Also, why cover yourself up with a big logo when you introduce yourself? I think you need to work a little harder on the video next time, please. Otherwise, another informative piece.

Hi Paul! Thanks for tuning in! Please kindly note that this is an older video. Our productions have come a long way since then thanks to the expertise and hard work of our amazing production team. :) There is certainly some truth to that notion, but, for discerning players, it can sometimes be useful to save a bit longer to purchase an instrument that will have longevity in terms of the level of satisfaction it provides them. Thanks again and happy playing!

I quit watching at 6 minutes - tired of waiting for him to say something about pianos. Also piano prices have come down quite a bit since 2016 - no demand.

Hey D Smith, thanks for the comments. I’ll see if I can get right to the meaty info even quicker in subsequent videos...appreciate the feedback. Also, not sure where you’re getting the info from, but I can assure you that most manufacturers have had multiple price increases since 2016. While I can’t guarantee that some retailers in some markets might be operating at lower margins, the vast majority of retailers in Europe, Asia, and North America have also raised prices since then. For a comprehensive price listing, you might want to check out pianobuyer.com. Thanks! - Stu Harrison
