I think it is so cool how well they can do these things early on but not sure I have the patience for the mess during the learning curve. I am definitely late to give silverware to my kids because messes give me anxiety! Excited for next week’s video. My 12 month old has been pretty regularly having total tantrums if he doesn’t get one of his favorite foods. Screeches, hits, throws until there’s nothing in front of him. We put a few pieces of food directly on the table/tray in front of him so there’s not a lot for him to fling.

I’m from the old school. I enjoyed feeding my baby. I did give them small pieces of food on their tray after I fed them. I don’t think they get enough to eat when they feed themselves. Everybody wants their babies to learn things before everybody else. Slow down and enjoy baby without trying to make them grow up too fast.

Hey Ashley, thanks for all your content it's fabulous! What would you recommend for starting to introduce cutlery and independent eating for a toddler 13 months old that did not have BLW before? I feel like I honestly didn't feel secure enough to do it although I sort of tried it but didn't really understand it, anyway now my son is ready and eager to eat independently but of course he has not practiced this skills much, what can you recommend?

I love how using cutlery with BLW is so different from the mainstream way of shoving it in their mouth and trying to get the food in. The latter is almost like force feeding to me. Also loved how she was already more patient the second time you had to reload the spoon and how she seemed to understand your signing! She did very well for her first time. Babies are such great learners!

Hi! I love your videos. Do you have a video or ay recommendations of introducing a spoon/fork to a 14 month old that already does the spoon exchange but needs practice scooping up? We did baby led weaning with our 14 mo and when I tried introducing the spoon to hold and scoop, she just holds the spoon and scoops with her hand. Im not super consistent though.

Hey Ashley this video did provide great information and I do have some feedback I feel compelled to provide. So I’m sure you probly never really thought about it and that’s totally fine it’s happens, but something I noticed about your videos and this one is particular is a good example, I noticed you left out a critical part in this interaction that is with your child. This caregiving routine is one of many others that’s a great opportunity to promote language and social skills development. As you are engaging with your child I feel it’s vital that you verbally walk her through the process. I noticed you were pretty much talking to the camera only. You forgot to even tell Mia you were giving her a spoon, that you were putting it in her mouth, and that you were taking it out of her mouth and would give her more. You want to be saying these things to her as you do them and keeping eye contact with her, giving her your full presentness to nurture a personal connection and attachment with her. I understand you were doing the video so that’s another level but it is so important. Imagine getting a spoon stuck in your mouth and pulled out repeatedly and you don’t even know what’s going on no one said anything to you. Also the one on one connection is just so important and i just had to say all this because it really hurts my heart truly. I feel what’s really wrong with most of society is that we missed that one on one personal connection with someone growing up and it is vital because it represents love. Ashley please know I mean all this with love. I watch all your videos and I love it all I just had to be honest. Let me know what you think

I don’t have kids.. so if someone could explain.. (I love this channel) What is the benefit to starting this young? When do most parent typically introduce silverware? I want to say its following the Montessori principles. It's meant to promote less picky eating and independence while respecting your child as an individual person (ie. The reason why in montessori there is "yes" spaces and furniture at their level). I think her first video in the series explains it but that is the reason why I'm starting blw with my baby when he turns 6 months

I haven't tried it, but you could try giving her more liquid foods, such as soup. That wont work if she just decides to drink from the bowl, but might help. You could also just keep handing her the fork to use herself

I use a second spoon to fill the one the baby uses. But I am going to drop this method.

My babe was pretty good about using a spoon by herself at 5 months but then I got told by an SLP that I should be spoon feeding her because there are important oral skills they need to learn from being properly spoon fed and now i’m conflicted and confused. Help ?

Maybe someone has asked this, but how do you deal with introducing cutlery to older kids? My 15 month old wants to try and use the spoon, but also play with it. I know that's probably normal, but frustrating 😬🤣

Hi, I have a question. Did you think the metal spoon would somehow hurt baby's teeth at the first time you fed your girl with it? That was what my husband was concerned.

What about a child that is not an eater and refuses to feed itself? Like she will play with the spoon but will not even try to approach it to her mouth. She is a toddler, mind you, we habe been trying to teach her for months, but she just does not want to eat on her own

My baby is 15 months, she places the food on the spoon correctly but she flips the food and the food falls off.

Do you all plan to send Kylie to a Montessori style school or keep it as a lifestyle only choice :)

I think I would rather use wooden cutlery than metal

My twins are 11 months. Allergic to milk (so no regular yogurt although we do some almond yogurt), no cottage cheese etc, so they hardly ever eat much that is naturally a puree....anyways they are 11 months and they don't use a spoon or fork. At this point they just gst mad if i try to make them. I missed the boat on this for sure. What on God's green does anyone have to recommend at this point? 🙄🙈
