A behind the scenes look at how the ultra-fast strikes of larval mantis shrimp are filmed and studied! Dr. Jacob Harrison took me to the Patek Lab at Duke University to show me how he does his research on these ocean predators and share with me some of what he's discovered.

I'm professor of zoology at U. Valencia, Spain, and this is the stuff I like to show to my students. We actually have a practical consisting in analyzing the morphoanatomy of Squilla mantis. Thanks for sharing. I love your channel btw.

If I were a student, this is the stuff I would want to learn and study. Zoology has to be a great field to be a part of! Ah if only.... ☺️

Thanks to Dr. Harrison for assuring us that even teeny-tiny beasts with ganglia for brains are being treated sensibly and ethically, I appreciate that.

i hope nobody there is just gluing a couple of shrimplets and having them box each other tho... i also wonder what other techniques they tried before settling on the superglue one.

Great video. Mantis shrimp are proof that tiny doesn't necessarily mean weak.

At first glance I thought the larval mantis shrimp claw would be used similar to an actual preying mantis claw, where they just grab things, but the truth is much more intense! Crazy how they look nearly identical from the tibia (I'm not sure if that's the proper term in the shrimp's case, but I'd assume it is) to the tip, but they function entirely differently.

My goodness, he sure has a lot to do before he can work with the shrimp. He looked like he was having fun and he was very excited. Which really rubs off. I am a giant fan of the work you two do. It's amazing! 🦐

I remember seeing a video not long ago in which a kayak angler accidentally pulled up a mantis shrimp. It landed on his foot and ended up punching a hole through his dive boot and into his foot.

one little missing detail tho... you didn't tell us what exactly these baby shrimps hunt! are they spearing other milimetre-scale zooplankton? probably not too ethical to get footage of them actually successfully spearing some prey, i'd assume?

I remember watching in documentaries lions hunting their prey and eating them. Now it seems nature is wrong and we need to censor it. Sadly, I lived long enough to realized the future is not what it used to be.
