I also believe that babies pick their own name! I couldn't get off "Chloé" off of my head when I was pregnant. There were many options but just Chloé kept popping up! And as soon as I saw her, she was always Chloé!

Picking names was by far the most difficult thing in each of my pregnancies. We ended up with Pepper and Cedar, both girls . And I'm really happy with them!

The level that I feel you on "Thomas" is unreal. I like the name as a name, however - every male on my mom's side of the family is named Thomas. My grandpa, my uncle, my cousin, and honestly it goes back generations further than I am willing to look. I just can't do that to my child. I can't go "this is your name because it just is" and I agree, I don'y like imposing the energy of someone else upon a child.

My son is Owen and my daughter is Annabeth, but sometimes we call her Beth and my son (who is 4 years older) gets upset that he doesn't have a nickname. His middle name is James, after my cousin who passed away when I was 14, but I don't like OJ as a nickname for him. Evelyn is my grandmother's name so that was on our shortlist for girls and Owen was almost Oliver!

We do family middle names. My son's middle name is Neale after my grandfather and K's first full day Out of the NICU was a year after he passed away.

My first & middle names are named after 2 separate family members & I love having that connection to them! I definitely think if I have children at least part of their names will have to come from a family member.

I come from a Slavic Eastern European background and in my country often times a baby is named after a grandparent of the same gender, no one really knows why nowadays but a lot of people still do it and we did it, too. However, I had loved my son's name ever since I can remember, it is long, strong and is a spin off of the name of the Greek goddess of earth, agriculture, crops and so on and my baby is a Cancer so we all know he needs some Earth-element in his life. :D As for English names - I like them classic and Biblical - James and Elizabeth would be my top picks if I had to choose an English version, I like names of royalty :)

Olive is a name that I wanted for Sophia. Nick was not keen. Funnily enough when she was born the idea of imposing a name on this tiny human for life just seems like too big of a task. In the end Nick named her and I am happy with her name. I don't like Sophia being shortened, I think that Soph or Sophie does not suit her, however, the nickname she has ended up with from us is Lulu but only we call her that!

I want to use Rose for part of a girl's name because it was my great-grandmother's name :) She also raised me until I was 14 when she passed away so I will definitely be using Rose

We have three children: Parker Fox 💙 Nora Ottolie❤️ Fraser Leo💙 When we were naming our children we wanted wild middle names but simple and not popular names. Parker was chosen because it was our favourite name and we chose Fox as a middle name because that was my grandads favourite animal. Nora was also our favourite name but Ottolie was found when we were on holiday and the waiter said that Ottolie was her name and we fell in love with it. And finally we chose Fraser because my parents got married on Fraser Island and Leo is mine and his dad star sign.

I have a William and a Luka. We are bilingual and live in Québec, so they had to have bilingual names. If we were purely english speaking, we loved the names Eli, Nora, Coralie and Olive. I really dislike the hyphened name trend in QC and also the very english names pronounced in french.

I love old lady names. Haha. I'm due in January (2nd baby) and if it's a girl, we'll be naming her for my grandmother - but I sort of look at it as naming her for the love? Not necessarily the person. Also, my aunt named her cat (who was such a sweetie) after my grandma as a kind of joke, but it totally suited the cat. So, we're just going to tell everyone we named her in honour of the cat. It will infuriate my mother. Haha. Names are so funny. People, as you said, with really common names I think tend to want something more unique for their children. I think that they kind of romantacise it and don't necessarily think of the downside to having a unique name (and I'm not just talking names that are spelled "creatively"). I am the only person in North America with my name. There is one other girl who was named after me, but different last names. My first name is an Irish surname (starts with Kill- cannot be shortened) and, while I love it now, I can safely say my name shaped me more than my husband (Adam) was shaped by his name. It's also weird for me naming my kids! I don't want them to feel the way I felt, but I cannot even imagine hearing my name applied to someone else. My son has a unique name, which is a name.. but it's a place name (one of those things that tends to end in -shire in the UK). Shortened, it's a great old man name and when he was born the midwives all went "oh my god, his name totally suits him". And it does! So that worked out. It's not so far from a couple very common names, so people mishear it a lot, but because it's close it's not, like, Xatieryehskf or something. Names!

When our first son was born we named him Jeremy....and we were insisting that everyone call him Jeremy....My FIL really tried to call the baby Jerry....but he finally stopped after my MIL told him he wasn't been fair, that they got to name "THEIR " kids and now his son should get to do the same !
