The first time I heard Baby Face (and this song), I was driving. I pulled the car over. Then I called the radio station because they did not announce the artist. I have been overwhelmed with the talent to this very day.

Thing is, Pharrell was working with Teddy Riley not too long after this (could've been around the same time), and Teddy & Babyface were contemporaries during New Jack. That's why Pharrell is on another level compared to most other modern producers...

Chaka Khanian ... you are correct! Although he had a solo album while he was with The Deele, this was indeed his first single (summer of `89) after that group split.

Yeah, his 1986 solo debut had a couple of songs that were Top 40 hits on the R&B charts ("I Love You Babe" was a Top 10 hit on the R&B charts in '87, and "Mary Mack" peaked on the Top 30 on the R&B charts the same year). But this track ("It's No Crime", from the Tender Lover album) was Babyface's first song to be a crossover hit on the Pop charts (peaking at #7 on the Pop charts in 1989, also being a big hit on the R&B and dance charts)
