I'm with you! Unfortunately, I don't think we're ever going to see that. It's my understanding that it was shot on video, so there isn't a piece of film from which to take a high resolution digital scan. And the effects were done with a video toaster, and there are no models available for the any of the modern rendering software. So someone would have to recreate ALL of the models and textures and then redo all of the shots and effects. It's definitely doable, but it would take a LOT of effort and wouldn't be cheap.

That's a 30mo HBO or 50mo Netflix subscription for DVDs alone. Or put in other way, a 3rd of my monthly salary. Very high price for an outdated product. I'm a fan, but not a fanboy. I would be willing to pay as much for a remaster, but not for old dvd-version. BTW, DVD-version is circulating here in mkv format, whole series fitting into 64GB pendrive or sd card, together with fan-made subs in several languages. Star Trek TNG also did a few years ago, now it's gone, because every trekkie I know got Netflix sub and is watching TOS and TNG remasters, along with DS9, ENT and Disco.

The space ship designs and variety in B5 were among the best ever. But particularly the Shadow ships were probably the scariest looking ships ever designed. They were a moment of genius imo. If the budget and today's technology had allowed at the time they could have been the up there with Ripley's alien. And speaking of aliens, the actual Shadows themselves were such a brilliant creation and a breath of fresh air from yet another humanoid alien species. They really could have done so much more with them using today's technology. Babylon 5 was so ambitious for it's time and the limitations of their budget. I believe every episode was made for around ⅓ of the cost for an episode of STDS9. It looks it in places but I still love B5 so much more.

@David Rapp I thought The Expanse was going to be something extraordinary during season 1 and enjoyed every second of it. It had everything, a Garibaldi-like character playing a space cop on a space station similar to Babylon 5, other interesting characters, lore / world building, politics a grand plot with a huge mystery. Unfortunately, the conclusions to the plots from season 1 in season 2 turned out to be less than satisfying to me and then they started to introduce new flat, uninteresting characters with weak cast. The actress playing Roberta Draper for example, can barely speak and don't even get me started on the generic Asian characters and their plot that went absolutely nowhere, I don't even remember their names. At least season 4 had Adolphus Murtry.

Still love these effects and designs. They STILL stand up even after all this time. One thing I loved about B5 designs was that they looked like they were actually made. Like, manufactured properly. You could see each plate of metal on every hull, and because not every plate is absolutely identical, there was shading differences, or differences in metal hue. They weren't seamless, smooth items; they were built from physical parts, with seams, defects, flaws, etc. Very real, at least to me. Shadow ships are still the scariest thing in space though. Can move in any direction, any facing, fire from any side or piece, hull material constantly reconfiguring and bubbling.... And their scream. And the cutter beam they fire... I never realized just how malicious their attack on that Narn base was; they were done with the planetary base, and they came back to cruelly dice the remains of the orbital base into shattered rubble.

@dominantprime
@dominantprime 2 жыл бұрын
How does computers being more powerful help though. Scenes render faster, sure, but you still have to create the scenes from scratch. Only a handful of scene files have survived from S2 and S3, which you can "just render", but the entire show has probably 15-20 hours worth of CGI across 5 seasons. That's 10 feature films worth of CGI to recreate. It doesn't happen by just pushing a button, that's going to take enormous amounts of man power and years to create. And that's the simple part with pure CGI shots, then we have the issue of huge number of composite shots.

Not going to happen, very few people buy and watch DVDS and Blu-Rays now in the western world and most new TV shows and Films are only released digitally. This looks excellent up could only happen and work on a steaming or VOD format provider. Studios are not going to spend big money on a physical release that very few, if any people would buy. The thing I always loved about B5 ships is how they obeyed Newtonian physics. Objects in motion remain in motion. That leads to some great shots, like Starfuries pivoting in place and facing the opposite direction to fire, while still maintaining their previous direction of travel, JUST like it would actually happen in real life!

I think what makes Babylon 5 so unique is the continuity from episode to episode from season to season. J Michael straczynski had a vision and he was allowed to actually follow through writing the entire series and directing. One of the nice things with the continuity of the actors in the series is the relationships you see developed are real.

B5 is one of my all time favorite shows. I remember watching it in my teens and it was so different from other shows at the time. I own the DVD release, was a little disappointed they didn't clean up the footage at the time (looks like a VHS dub with all the artifacts and minimal post cleanup). I figure I still got good value on them though, as I've watched them several times over. BSG (Battle Star Galactica) did space battle differently, they had silent space battles with background orchestral music, that was really interesting to watch too.

The HBO Max version uses new HD scans of the original camera negative for the live-action, but only upscaled versions of the original 4x3 480p renders of the computer effects. This video is made from the original scene files and mostly original models and textures. And it is rendered in a vintage version of Lightwave that would have been used near the end of the show's run. Many of the assets still exist, and re-renders at higher resolutions are possible in many cases. See Tom Smith's channel for more info: kzfaq.info/love/tNtUIbU5zDuTq_BJ7xj_MA

Cost - it would cost nearly as much to redender the footage as it would to make new footage from scratch for an completely different show - perhaps if they set up a pipeline to do it - such as made a side story set in the same universe that could get some people in place to do it then it might be feasible "eventually" as I mentioned in another post there is a shot deconstruction tech available now that can make CGI Meshes movements and shot plans out of finished footage that helps the process a fair bit - so I'd say well ask again in 2027 and it might be perfectly feasible to see an 8K upscale release then.

@@90lancaster Re-rendering the original files would actually be pretty fast period the problem is, that they lost a whole set of data of the original effects files. Software compatibility since then it’s another issue.
@90lancaster
@90lancaster 3 жыл бұрын
@@buckymsr Yes my understanding is that only some select data survived on some personal drives that people had at home and the majority was lost in a fire. That was why I mentioned that newish programme technic that can turn the finished product back into data files - which could then be associated with newer niced textures and re-rendered at a higher res - once that technique has matured that is at least one way to reduce the work load of one day re-rendering the show's CGI - though some things like the CGI matt paintings they may just have to get someone to do over I guess.

I would love to see some of these updates make their way over to the fanedit community... I know the biggest problem are the composite shots, as these do not exist in higher resolution. HOWEVER, the possible way around those are to REDUCE them in size and create a wider shot around them... thus, when we are in a travel tube, we see more of the travel tube (creating a new effect) and put the old effect at the center in smaller form... similar to the old film technique of painting glass (matte paintings) around a live scene. Star Wars did this film technique, and it is detailed in "Star Wars Behind The Scenes - Matte Paintings - Star Wars The Digital Collection" Conceptually, we could take the existing scene, reduce it to its best clarity, and fill in the space around it with matching effects to make it "feel" high definition.
