@@hagamapama Earth Force heavy laser technology was provided by Narns who themselves retro engineered it from Centauri captured designs. @@hagamapamaThey didn't fool around either. The ships sent against the Narn fleet were full-on capital ships. It took the massed pinpoint fire of three ships to do any damage at all to one of them, whereas the Shadow energy beams sliced through the Narn cruisers like they were nothing.

Also, how does Delenn actually know? She's heard *stories* about Shadows, but those are a thousand years old. It seems likely to that Shadows were so terrifying that legends like "they never miss" would spring up when really, they *rarely* miss. Particularly given that their CPUs are living people and the quality of the hardware there probably varies. Also, the White Star was a much more agile ship than they're used to. Targeting something that darty has got to be hard.

I feel like ME bummed quite a bit off of B5 from a narrative point of view. There are other sci-fi properties that they clearly took from, but the whole idea of cyclical carnage and chaos throughout the Galaxy to forge a better, stronger version of sentient life really sticks out. That and how the Shadows took members of the younger races as thralls for use in their ships and/or as intermediaries as seen with Sheridan's wife, Morden, etc. Really comes off as an inspiration for the "indoctrination" aspect. I'm no big fan nor expert on ME but I've watched people play through the Legendary Edition here recently and it wasn't too long after I rewatched B5, and this struck me big time. Yes, I know the Reapers were AI and were motivated by avoiding organic vs. synthetic conflict or whatever the contrivance there was (there was also no real rival/foil against them as with the Vorlons fighting the Shadows in B5). But the stakes were similar, and if the cycle had continued then most of the major powers would have been destroyed or rendered extinct. The survivors would have at once been celebrated by the Shadows as being stronger for enduring and guided along, nudged by the Vorlons, with some other trump card besides telepathy perhaps being devised for them on the next go-around. But also consider how the Shadow War ended. It took a mythic figure like Sheridan who died and came back to forge an alliance of interstellar powers (many of whom did not get along), with all sorts of other intrigue going on at the same time. This was something that had happened before, but wasn't ever enough to prove that the Galaxy had moved beyond being curated by the older races until Sheridan came along. The similarities are striking and I doubt it's pure coincidence. Really a testament to how well JMS crafted a broad and engaging story on such a scale.

The creators of ME are huge B5 fans. They've admitted that the series directly inspired their game. There was talk on some forums after ME launched that they originally wanted to make a B5 universe game, but because WB wouldn't grant any licensing they just took the B5 story then changed it enough that WB couldn't sue them. Years later I noticed that ME also contains storylines that very close to whats in the B5 novel trilogies. I didn't even pick up on that until I read them, and its a shame because I didn't get to read them until 2 years ago. The novels are meant to supplement the TV series, Crusade, and all the movies.

@@brianwhedon8442 Didn't know they were outright about it. I only know a couple of people who are big fans and never really followed any of the forums or other resources. Makes sense, though. Real shame that WB were so tightwadded about the franchise being adapted as a game series but I suppose that allowed for a new IP that would gain broad appeal and maybe point some of its fans back to the roots.

@@The_Lucent_Archangel the late 90s was a good time for B5. There was the TV series and TV movies. There were novels co-written by JMS that are considered canon. There was a space combat computer sim in the works by Sierra. There was merchandizing, from shirts to action figures to collectable toys and model kit. Agents of Gaming had a space combat RPG game with scaled pewter minatures. But midway thru the early 2000s all that ended. It is no secret JMS wanted to always retain some control of his work, but WB owned all the rights to everything else. After the Legend of the Rangers movie failed to get picked up, WB cut ties to everything they had previously and contacted Mongoose publishing and gave them the rights to a RPG. Supposedly JMS had no say in this RPG which is why he doesn't consider any of their material canon. Well the Mongoose deal only lasted about 5 years and during this time JMS and WB were fighting. JMS wanted to do a theatrical movie (the only thing he could do that WB didn't own the rights to) and WB was fighting it. There was a compromise reached where WB and JMS settled on The Lost Tales for SciFi Channel but because of the death of a couple core actors, JMS held back on making more of TLT. And at this time the CEO of WB viewed B5 as a dead series. JMS revisited the movie idea again in the later 2000s but it fell thru. Around the time JMS was finishing the script for the movie, WB cancelled the deal with Mongoose. Since then, there has been nothing. Fast forward to 2020, and WB has a new CEO (who is a B5 fan) and JMS tells the world he's interested in doing a B5 reboot. The fans are in, the new WB is in. Well as of 2022, there's been some reshuffling around. Networks were bought and sold, CEO's replaced. As of now, the B5 reboot is on indefinite hold. We are back at square one.

All of those ideas have been done before Babylon 5, though. More advanced race deliberately starting conflict in order to make a younger race stronger/more prepared = Q introduces the Federation to the Borg in TNG. A cycle of destruction that periodically sweeps the galaxy = The Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah in Star Control II. Star Control II also did the thing with the enemy race using slaves from other races to fight for them, as well as an inspiring human leader uniting many different alien races to finally end the threat. I'm sure these tropes are even older, too.

@@michelecastellotti1884 The Shadows don't want to straight murder everyone, they want a conflict where the stronger of the young races would emerge from the conflict even stronger, in an extreme "survival of the fittest" scenario. So the ships of theirs we see are heavily scaled down drones so that the younger races actually have a fighting chance. If they brought their true technology to bear, they'd annihilate the younger races with ease. The Shadows were a space faring race well before the Vorlons.

They took one out with a telepath and a White Star's (medium cruiser) Beam Cannon and the second with a White Star's Beam cannon and two Heavy X-ray laser cannons from the Narn G'Quan class heavy cruiser. The crabs control system was being completely fcked with by the psychics that are on the field. Lyta cannot immobilize the one chasing them but she can still interrupt it some. Shadow engine tech is unknown that I'm aware. I do remember there being commentary about the crabs diverting power from the drive systems to the shielding when under heavy fire causing them to seemingly stop moving. Personally I blame the difficulty of rendering newtonian style shots involving such large complex objects. They did a good job with the star furies though.
