That is without mentioning (what looks like but with Japanese facial features, so probably isn't ... although they did start the concert with 'Ave Maria') the Virgin Mary statue behind her being decapitated This was the moment we all realised and fully accepted that a Japanese girl celebrating her 16th birthday and her two 14 year old friends are far more 'metal' than any of us ever were or will ever be.

Legend 1997 was the show celebrating Su’s 16th birthday!

"I am Su-Metal. I am YuiMetal. I am MoaMetal. We are BABYMETAL!" Hi Michael! Good reaction! "Legend 1997" was Su's 16th birthday show, she was born in 1997. Yui and Moa were born in 1999 and there was a "Legend 1999" celebrating their birthdays as well. There's also been a "Legend - S" and a "Legend - M" for Su and Moa's respective 20th birthdays played in their hometowns. There would have been a "Legend - Y" however Yui had to leave the group in 2018 due to unspecified health reasons. "BABYMETAL - DEATH" is really a play on words in Japanese. When a native Japanese speaker says the English word "death" it sounds like the Japanese word "desu" (u is silent) which means "is/am/are". This was generally their opener as a way to introduce the band to the audience and get them hyped up, however here it was a closer with the sacrificing of Su-Metal to be reborn as a metal goddess. There's a lot of nods to Metallica here, which the girls have often said is their favorite metal band. The opening guitar riff is like Metallica's "One", and the Mother Mary statue is a nod to Metallica's "And Justice for All" Lady Justice statue.

⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀 I've told this story before, but I saw BABYMETAL open for Korn & Stone Sour in Chula Vista, CA back in 2017. The concert was on Yui's Birthday (June 20th). There were devoted Korn fans on either side of me, who were expecting something called BABYMETAL to be pretty mellow. They opened with 'BABYMETAL Death'. The look of shock was worth the price of admission by itself. : ) BTW, the song title and lyrics are a play on words in Japanese. The full title is 'BABYMETAL Death' (BABYMETAL is part of the song title.) The word "desu" which can mean "I am" or "We are" is pronounced "des", which can sound like "death", especially if you stick your tongue out a bit when you say it. So when they say "Su-metal Death!, Yuimetal Death!, Moametal Death!, BABYMETAL Death!", it also means "I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are BABYMETAL". This song has usually been a show opener, but for the 'Legend 1997' concert, it was the last song of a five song encore with the live Kami Band.

This has been their intro song until 2018. Only for a few performances it was moved to the end to allow for a crucifixion. :-) It always makes me smile when I imagine people going to the show of that Japanese girl-band for the first time, expecting Pop music with some mild hardrock influences, and then being greeted by this song. :-)

They were supposed to play on a side stage but the promoters heard them and moved them to a main stage. Played before 30,000 brits who had mostly never heard of them. This was their finale.

When People ask if Babymetal are 'really' Metal, I tell them that Babymetal crucified their lead singer live on stage as her 16th birthday treat while 10,000 fans screamed "Death! Death! Death!" and a statue of the virgin mary crumbled behind her and that, yes, they are pretty fucking Metal. The lyrics are simple - they spell out B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L and then shout out what sounds like 'Death' but is the Japanese form of 'to be', or I/You/They are' - Desu. So, the lyrics are "I am Babymetal" and, er, that's it. Babymetal often like to play on Japanese words that sound like something in English. As the word Desu has a silent 'u' and the 's' is spoken with the tongue between the teeth, it sounds like 'Death'. And that's that explained! Amazingly, this was the opening track to their 1st album - what an intro (though here it was done at the end of a performance as it was Su's 16th birthday!

"ready" or |not ready" ? LOL, some people were probably having a laugh. :-) Her "death" was so she would be reborn as a goddess of metal. Obviously, the kind of thing you do casually like it's nothing LOL. In Japanese manga it's common to use rebirth as a way to symbolize a new phase in life. Anyway, best sweet 16 party ever ! Babymetal is a lot of fun, which is why it's fun watching reaction videos.

I think it's safe to say that with BABYMETAL you're never truly "ready" for the next song :) The usual rule of thumb is to expect the unexpected. With that said, I think you're definitely at a point where you don't have to worry too much about which song to do or in what order. BABYMETAL is an experience. I do not freaking know what I did on my 16th birthday. Suzuka will know it for sure for the rest of her life, I guess. I own the Blu-Ray they released from this show and I say the whole show was beyond epic! Rick already told you some general things about this song, so I will add some details regarding this particular performance: The show "Legend 1997 SU-METAL Seitansei" ("Legend 1997 SU-METAL Holy Birthday") not only was the 16th birthday celebration show for Suzuka Nakamoto. It also marked the transition of BABYMETAL from a mere side-project of Sakura Gakuin (Cherry Blossom Academy) to a band in its own right. And this was done with a lot of symbolism. For instance, the show kicked off with a special dubstep remix-version of "Headbanger!" with Suzuka very obviously lipsyncing to symbolize the pop-idol she was before and with the music completely coming from tape. "BABYMETAL DEATH" on the contrary, ended the show including the crucifixion of the former idol Suzuka Nakamoto and her rebirth as the metal goddess SU-METAL while incorporating real musicians playing the music.

Let me tell you a secret: this song is in one of my playlist along with Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Marilyn Manson, RATM, Deftones, Jinjer, Slipknot, well you know what I mean...

The statue falling is a tribute to Metallica who had the same thing in a concert back in the days. BABYMETAL has lots of metal heads behind them so they know all about metal :)

It's funny you should react to this one today. I was driving to and from the London show yesterday and listening to a lot of Babymetal, like you do. I started thinking about the track list from this first album. So people had probably heard Doki Doki Morning, lots of pop with some heavy backing, and they may have heard iine, lots of everything, and then they probably saw Gimme Chocolate, heavy with cutesy, poppy vocals. So these same people go out and buy the album, or their kids pestered them to buy it, and this is what they get for the first track, Death. Virtually no vocals and THAT music. It made me smile thinking about it anyway. Anyway, nice reaction and you know you can follow all the recommendations you are given by all the knowledgeable folk on here. Keep it up.

My 16th birthday was nothing like this!! This is where SU-METAL became our GODDESS QUEEN and an IDOL LEGEND. Watching BABYMETAL is like getting punched in the face by three kawaii Asian girls, and you know what I'm ok with that. Its times like this when you realize three kawaii Asian girls are more METAL than you.

In the concerts there’s an energy; the girls, the band and the crowd. The song Megistune from their tour. In the middle of the song Su looks over crowd and asks “are you ready to dance?” that energy just pops. Its positive celebratory unifying.
