Probably the biggest moment in BABYMETAL history, being accepted, cheered for and then being asked for more at the end by a traditionally hostile British metal fandom was pretty cool

According to the lore, it wasn't just the British crowd accepting BM, It was also also the three girls realizing how big they were, accepting their fate... as being heavy metal queens.

The reason why this performance holds a special place in the hearts of fans is that this was their first big show outside asia. Most of the people in the audience had probably never heard of them, and the girls were very nervous and afraid that they might not be accepted. Well, the crowd reaction at the end says all about how it turned out, as does Su's big smile after her last "we are". Maybe that's also one of the reasons why they didn't do any crowd interaction. The crowd didn't know them, didn't know the songs, didn't know the language, and they only had a 30 minute set to get their music across. Just a thought. If you want to see the girls recover from accidents, try the 2014 Budokan show. Yui fell off the stage at one point (I think about 6 feet, but don't quote me on it) and showed up for the next song, and shortly after, Moa experienced some foot injury and finished the rest of the set in visible pain. They are not lacking dedication. I had to laugh when it became obvious that you were contemplating whether to count the "we are" as crowd interaction. :-)

Here's a fun fact,10 years ago Dragonforce had to sneak Babymetal onstage to play with them at a festival because the promoter didn't want them there. Now Babymetal will be one of the headliners at that same festival this summer, and to add to the irony Dragonforce will be opening for Babymetal when they play in San Francisco next month. It's an interesting example of the unpredictable twists and turns a career in music can take you on

Good reaction. There is no "right or wrong" performance for BABYMETAL - but some people will always have their favourites. This particular performance was all about the occasion rather than the song itself so I'm sure this was why it was requested. I think you would rate it a bit higher if you had known the circumstances of this particular performance ... this was not the festival with the rain - that was Download 2016, two years later. This was Sonisphere 2014, their very first time in the UK, their first major event outside of Japan, they were aged 16 and only just turned 15 (Moa's birthday was the day before) and virtually unknown ... apart from the 'Gimme Chocolate' video. They had originally been booked for a small side stage or tent with maybe a couple of thousand people ... the noise on line led to their being moved to the main stage with just a couple of months notice. Some 'elitists' who had seen the first 30 seconds of 'Gimme Chocolate' (and some who had been told about it but didn't watch it for themselves) were not happy BABYMETAL would be at Sonisphere in the first place. Hearing they would be on the main stage led to threats of bottles of p1$$ being thrown ... fortunately that never happened. Before they went on stage the girls couldn't see the crowd and they were worried nobody was there and what they should do if that was the case. They walked out to see a sea of puzzled faces ... Su is reported as having thought "This will be fun, let's knock it out of the park." In fact this was the biggest crowd the organisers had ever seen at Sonisphere so early in the day on a Saturday (I think there was just one band played before them) ... there were over 50,000 there to see BABYMETAL (most were getting their places for later bands of course - Iron Maiden were headlining later that evening) They had about 25 minutes, just 5 songs, to try to win the crowd over ... their very first major event and metal festival outside of Japan, by far the biggest crowd they had played to up to then and singing in a language the crowd didn't speak. IDZ was the fifth and last song of the set (Su even had some of the crowd trying to sing along to 'Gimme Chocolate' with the second song - plenty of interaction there and earlier in the set), the crowd interaction in IDZ is to do with Yui's and Moa's parts and the choreo - and for that song it ties in with the lyrics, so they can't just step out unless they plan to ... and their time was very limited - they were given no extra time to put their marks for the choreo on the stage or to do a sound check, so the Kami Band did that quickly before they started (I think - I don't know for sure - they may have cut a song from the set to allow for that) and they had been told if they overran the organisers would just turn off the power. They completely won over what was a potentially hostile crowd ... you could hear them calling for "One more song" at the end. I hope you saw how happy Su looked when she waved at the end of the "We are ..." at the end too. This was probably the most important performance in their history, this was the moment they felt they would be accepted by the metal fans and the metal community and that they could break language and other barriers with their music and it gave them the confidence and belief in themselves to go on. They had the biggest mosh pits of the weekend and their merch outsold all the other bands playing that weekend (including the big hitters like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Slayer, Avenged Sevenfold and many more).

this was the first festival they did outside Japan. Su was 16 and the others just turned 15. they were booked on a smaller stage and then they were changed to the big stage. there is talk that the girls didn't think any more than about 5000 people would show up and they didn't know how many til they actually went out on stage in front of 50,000. this was in 2014 and the Download was in 2016. there is not much crowd reaction because basically no one really knew who they were til this day. their merch out sold all the big name bands that were there like Metallica and a few more. Babymetal was the talk that festival. i love the Tokyo version you did but this is in every fan because of the place and the story around it. and FYI the guy you saw did a bad flip is actually the brother of another reactor that was there but didn't even think about Babymetal til about a year ago and to see him see his brother and then the light goes off and he remembers.

I'm not disagreeing with your score at all as it's your opinion. But would it have been more impressive if you knew this was their first gig in the west and only their second one outside of Japan? That the crowd had no idea who they were and only turned up to rip them apart if they didn't aprove, and the girls were acutely aware of this before hand? I'm not saying it should or would have effected your score if you had known but it might have done. It's always going to be 10/10 for me, the fact there was no real stage production at all proves that Babymetal are not just theatre, and they can go head to head with any band on the small stage.

The thing I love best about this performance is how ironic that they are playing a song about anti-bullying. leading up to the festival some metal heads threatened that if Babymetal was to play they would have bottles of piss thrown at them and booed off stage among other bullying bullshit. The crowd having no idea what the song is about, in a language that they don't understand Babymetal delivered one the biggest "FUCK YOU" in music history, when Babymetal left that stage they had rubbed the noses in the shit of those who thought it was a good idea to bully them. When 60,000 people are chanting "We want more!" that's a win.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。 Speaking of crowd interaction, this performance is the sheer best for inexperienced girls at that time. This was the biggest show for the first time in their lives as middle-teen girls and held even outside their homeland anyway. In this video, I love to see the excited crowd gradually turn into enthusiastic audience. When three girls started to speak some words in the interlude, loud cheers quickly subsided and the audience even tried to listen to what they were saying although the people could not understand our language. I am emotionally moved whenever I see that scene. People in the crowd became happy, so did Kami band, and I am sure that the three girls fell asleep very happily that night after the big accomplishment at the biggest event in the foreign county.

I think its amazing that Yui had a wardrobe malfunction(skirt ripped) but she still powers trough and you think its part of the show. Only realized it after watching it multiple times. The thing with crow interaction at this particular event was hard to do because they where pretty unknown to the crowd at this point at the event they where told that they have i think it was about 10 minutes to go on stage play a few songs and get out. Ijime, Dame, Zettai was the last song they played on this stage and the most amazing thing is at the first song the crowd was confused but they began to love it more and more trough the songs. Through their hard work at the end of this song the crowd even chanted "we want more" Truly amazing. The crowd and the event leader didnt know what was coming for them😁

Good one, thanks! All the choreo and specially Yui and Moa's (now Moa and Momoko's) parts and also their chants and lines are designed to involve the crowd. It's like this because in Japan is very unpolite to sing along the lead singer. If they don't react properly, the problem is not on BABYMETAL side. This time, most of the people there had no clue what BABYMETAL was, so it's understandable. Even knowing them, the reactions of the crowd vary greatly depending on where they are performing. This is one thing you only understand once you attend a live show in Japan. Because crowds there seem choreographed, it's just incredible. How they manage mistakes? Only four months before this performance took place, they had a really bad time at Budokan Red Night when Yui literally fell off the stage (probably from 7 feet) during the call and response of "Headbanger" and had to skip the rest of the song. She appeared for the next and final one (it was "IDZ, by the way) and then Moa, slipped during the initial sprints and got injured ending the song and the show almost in tears. Also, if you pay attention here, Yui's tutu was tearing up but she managed to control it without missing a beat. They are not divas, they are warriors.

Yes, this is Sonicsphere 2014 their first big show in front of foreigners, not only do they not speak japanese and they were designed for the japanese market. And we mustn't forget they did not have free time, they were not the Stars, they were unknown to nearly the complete audience. And we know how they reacted after accidents. When Yui Fell of the stage she reappeared in the next song from the sidelines but i think Moa was in fact injured from thecday before. But whatcreally made this show special: No one had the smallest Indikation that they would become the biggest International success for any japanese band. At sonicsphere the dealer Sold out of Merchandising. They had to reinvent zhe total approach to the show. This is the reason why each of their Shows Switches to english. You have to expect in every show that their are people in the audience that don't understand you otherwise.

There's a video of the entire 30 minute performance here on YT, you should give it a watch sometime. You'll get a better appreciation for how the crowd warmed up to them during the set and began to interact with them. The camera angles on this video doesn't do that justice because it focused mainly on the girls, rightly so but it missed a lot of what was happening in the crowd. BTW they'll be one of the headliners at this year's UK Download Festival in June

This seems like one of those where knowing the circumstances could elevate a score. These ladies endured something that would have sent most grown musicians running home. There is a picture of Moa and Yui looking scared as hell holding tightly to Su. Threats were made towards them if they stepped onto that stage. Three little girls and their metal band won over a crowd that a lot of people thought that they had no business playing in front of.

This performance is very important to Babymetal fans. I'll paste Blackwolf 482's comment (written under the original video) to show you why :) "OK, some background. The song title actually means "No More, Bullying, Forever". It was the ending song at this show, where they managed to turn an epic FAIL into an epic victory. - This was their first tour outside of Japan, and their first UK show - They booked a small stage but, for an unknown reason, they were moved to the main stage at the last minute. Instead of 3-5 thousand of their loyal fans they faced 30-50 thousand (?) trve metalheads. - This was a crowd waiting for Ghost, Deftones, Anthrax, and Iron Maiden. 90% of them knew absolutely nothing about BM. - BM released their debut album just a few months before. All the above mentioned bands had several albums and decades of history behind them. - They were girls between 14-16, all their songs had backing tracks, they sang not in English (the only other metal band that could get away with it recently was Rammstein). The backing band was made up of session musicians. The girls were singing about chocolate, and they were playing hide and seek on the stage, literally. They already had their own made up religion about the Fox God, and their hand sign was mocking the devil's horns. - This was NOT metal at all. They were nobodies and they didn't belong on the main stage of a metal festival. But, they knew it well, and they expected to get booed and bottled. There's a backstage photo of the girls before the show and their faces read "WE ARE F*CKED" And they went on the stage and Yui's hoodie got stuck in her hair, Moa's headset did not work and she missed the opening moves of the choreo. There was a close up of Yui's face on the projector screen at this moment, she saw what was happening, and for a moment her expression was like "ok, forget it, NOW we are f*cked..." - You can see in your video that Yui's skirt also started to fall apart at the last song, IDZ. - So what else happened? The crowd got a taste of the band at the soundcheck and they loved it. Then there was an epic (or ridiculous ?) Star-Wars style video intro showed on the screen. The first song started and 30 seconds later there were moshpits forming. In the next song, Gimme Chocco, there was a call-and-respond where Su effortlessly made the crowd sing the chorus in Japanese. Next came the solos and everybody shat themselves. Then the song titled Catch Me If You Can, then their women-empowering song, and then the ending song you saw. The biggest circle pits and WOD's of the festival. - Everybody was talking about them, and their T-shirts were top sellers even two days later. - If there's an epic entrance to the genre, this is it."

I requested this as for me it was nearly the beginning of my BabyMetal journey. Had it not been a friend deriding them as not Metal, I would have not checked them out to see if he was right. As others have stated, imagine this being your first major performance outside your home country.. BabyMetal were the first band on and as you guessed it was midday. I always imagine myself arriving at the Festival with some friends and one said, lets go and see BabyMetal. Who are they I would ask? Oh, a Japanese Metal band with three teen girls singing. Err, lets not! Would be my response. There are many back stories about this performance, sadly the biggest one about them being switched to the main stage at the last minute, is not true. You are badly off with your review regarding this performance. No this was not the same stage as the Karate, reaction you made from the Download Festival in 2016. I can not emphasise enough that this was BabyMetals first major appearance outside Asia and was in 2014. So all your points about the usual BabyMetal performance are invalid. Most things you mention was referring to BabyMetal performances years later in their career. It is crass to compare a bands initial shows to shows performed years later. It is a shame you did not know this was such an early performance. Your score would have been higher but you still gave it a good score.

8:10 There is a synth tracked on parts of this. There was some during that solo. It was on the higher end. If you want to see more crowd interaction from this show, you should react to Gimme Chocolate from this same show. 12:44 Their vocals are also tracked on this part. Probably necessary for clarity. The camera crew seem a bit lost during the last guitar solo. They lose the "fight" between Yui and Moa.

Good score. As far as crowd reaction, they had plenty of CR in the previous songs in the abbreviated festival performance (which you saw in your ‘Karate’ reaction). Only so many times you can ask “How you doing, Download?”😅 With your self-labeled masochistic trait, surprised you didn’t respond to Yui’s wardrobe malfunction and how she powered through. 🤔 Lastly, with BabyMetal fans clinging to every nuance in the history of time regarding the band, if any of the girls fell, there would somehow be pictures, fancams, cave drawings of it. Thus, don’t think it happened here 🤷🏻‍♂️

Crowd interaction in this show is weak, I agree. But I understand why. They were small time, this is their first festival outside of Japan. They were moved up to the main stage after a band dropped out. Also, what most people don't understand about this band, outside of Japan, this is a religious band. What I mean is, the whole production is in dedication to a Fox God. When the Japanese go to a Baby Metal show, they are going to worship. The crowd jumping and chanting as one, evokes this God,. Not only do the Japanese crowds understand this, they embrace it. That's why the band refers to the crowd as "The One". The crowd in this video is there to SEE a show. They have no idea they are supposed to BE the show. Even if they did, most of them come from Christian backgrounds, so they wouldn't. In their faith any other God that is not Jesus's father is by definition unholy. The second song in this set is Gimme Chocolate and Su-Metal tries to get them to sing, with limited results. All that being said, supposedly this is Su-Metal's favorite show. It's their first festival outside of Japan. By my observation, when they first started the introduction, you could hear some people laughing. By the end of the 3rd song, Su-Metal had her hooks in. At the end, you saw for yourself, they were begging for more. I read, she said, as the set progressed, she could see their energy slowly radiate from the stage to the front, all the way to the back. She knew in that moment, they could make it on the international stage. You rating system needs a "Rock Star Moment" factor, or multiplier. For those video that capture one in a life events on film. This video is one of those.

Nice reaction, thank you for giving it another go (although I actually requested this maybe 2 months before the original IDZ reaction dropped, but I suspect you must have already filmed the original as I assume otherwise you would have just added my name to that reaction - but my request definitely wasn't a case of "you did the wrong version you have to do this version" - but thank you anyway for doing another reaction to it). A lot of the significance to this particular version though comes from the backstory behind the events leading up to this show which was their first trip outside Asia, but it looks like others have already written about that in other comments so I'll avoid being redundant. But I have to ask, doesn't it count as crowd interaction when Moa and Yui were up on the blocks at the front of the stage trying to lead the crowd in the audience participation parts (which obviously since 90% of the crowd weren't familiar with Babymetal before this performance, they didn't necessarily get - but Moa and Yui were still trying)? Thanks again for doing this!

This was the first video I saw from Babymetal performing live and it got me even more than their music videos (I still wasn't aware at the time about their incredible live shows in Japan). This performance in particular really catapulted them to even bigger success than they were already having in Japan and other Asian countries and solidified them as a household name in the west regarding metal artists. At the time, lots of metal "purists" disliked Babymetal, everything about it. They used to trash them, especially the girls, claiming "it's not metal" but using no real arguments to back up their claims, only hurt feelings and stereotypes. So given the time frame and the title of the song "No more bullying" it was truly a great moment seeing a tough crowd completely fall in love with the band, they truly won that crowd and showed how metal they were. It didn't happen in this live show but I really like when there's rain during festivals. I just think it adds another element that helps to the atmosphere (for example when they performed "Karate" at Download, Su looking at the sky while hitting the higher notes and the downpour combined made it for a really cool visual, as if she had control of the rain).

Your pronunciation of japanese isnt perfect, but its a lot better than it used to be. If you care, its "ee-jee-meh dah-meh ze-(brief stop)-tai". You were very close.
