Imagine being 15-16 years old and getting bumped up from a small side tent (expecting just a couple thousand to show) to the main stage in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads BUT 95+% of them never heard of you, some came to hate on you (based on their videos up to this point like "Gimme Chocolate" which had gone viral a few months before and many thought they were a joke or gimmick), and these people are known to throw bottles at the acts if they don't like them! But by the end of their 30-ish minute set, the crowd is chanting "We want more! We want more!" which you can hear at the end of this video because this was their closing song. They had the largest pits and wall of death's, as well as sold the most merch out of all the acts performing at that event (Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc). This show was the start of them blowing up outside of Japan and is considered a major moment in BABYMETAL history. I have seen some people refer to this moment in BABYMETAL history, as the miracle at Sonisphere. This is why this show is my favorite of all their shows! Great video and reaction! Keep up the great work! 🦊🤘

There's a pic of the girls backstage waiting to go on and they do look frightened. And add to that, there was a sound ck prob., Moa's head-set wasn't working at the start, Yui's cloak got caught on her hair-piece as they came on stage (it's in a vid) and of course, her tutu started to unravel. And, like the Pros they are, they gave one of the best performances ever! (I know, they are all great!)

Really important concert in the band's history. It was their first UK performance and they were scheduled to just play a small side stage at this festival. The organizers decided to have them open the main stage instead, and they ended up with a huge crowd. They really didn't know how the crowd was going to take them, and they were warned to plan for the worst, boos, and thrown bottles for anyone who dared to make metal cute in the UK. Scary stuff for young girls. They clearly totally won the crowd over and subsequently sold out a London show later that year. Huge confidence boost for the band. I sort of see this performance as the day when they went from being a Japanese idol band who played metal to seeing themselves as a proper internationally viable metal band.

The sold out London show was just a few days after this - it was one of the reasons they were moved to open the main stage as the London show had sold out so fast they moved it to a bigger venue - and that sold out just as quickly.

It's even more different than it appears from this. I won't go into their history but they are nothing like other metal bands. I would not personally say that they are one. They're pop stars who perform metal. Their backing band is a traditional metal band. But they came later and are not considered part of Babymetal. The band you see in this video did every live show from 2014-2019. In 2019 they had an American band backing them in Europe and America. I like them even better. They don't get enough credit for how innovative they are. They care nothing for genre boundaries. They'll put anything in a song. They always make it work somehow. If it isn't great on the album it will be when performed live. The girls are super talented. Not in the way that metal fans are used to. But Yui left for health reasons in 2018 and they've had a very hard time replacing her. There is no question that they lost some popularity when she left. We all miss her.

This was their international breakout, understand there were no Japanese international bands at the time. There is a video of a Japanese journalist who attended Sonisphere, and the publisher of Japan's top metal magazine with a presenter discussing Babymetal and their sudden international fame. The journalist said that Su, Moa and Yui are the most famous Japanese high school students in the world. As to their physical fitness, it is at the Olympic pentathlon athletes level. The very front of the audience were fans, but behind them most had no idea who they were.Think about it, hardcore metal fans coming to see bands made up of hairy men screaming at them with a bands that is more loud than good. Then a very professional band begins to play and 3 adorably cute teenagers come out and actually sing, plus OMG dance. those metal-heads didn't know what hit them.
@Grington300

Great reaction. You are right about the hand sign (the kitsune or fox) - legend has it (i don't know if it is true but it is a good story) they were being shown the devil horns and mistook it for the shadow play fox - Koba (their producer) ran with it and the lore around their being summoned by the Fox God to lead the metal resistance was all developed from there. This was their very first major event outside of Asia. Su was 16, Yui and Moa had only just had their 15th birthdays (Moa's was the day before) and they spoke hardly a word of English. They were originally booked to play a small side stage or tent in front of maybe a couple of thousand people, but the video for 'Gimme Chocolate' went viral and there was a lot of interest in them (and some controversy among some elitists calling them a joke or gimmick and not real metal). A couple of months before the event they were moved to open the main stage on the Saturday morning - some of the elitists on social media said they didn't belong at the festival, never mind on the main stage and threatened to turn up with bottles to throw. They were given no time for a sound check so the Kami band did their sound checks and they cut the set by one song. Before going on stage the girls couldn't see the crowd and were worried what to do if nobody was there to see them. They walked out to see over 50,000 faces - most of them looking puzzled as they didn't know them or what to expect. At that point Su is reported as thinking 'this will be fun'. As they started Moa's head set failed so she missed the cue to start the choreo - she caught up when she heard the drums. You spotted Yui's skirt catching on her studded wrist band and tearing - she untangled it and didn't miss a beat. Su had some of the crowd singing along with her in Japanese in the second song ('Gimme Chocolate') and as you heard at the end here - this was the last of the 5 songs they did, they had the crowd calling for 'more' and 'one more song'. This was an historic performance for BABYMETAL and established them as a touring band - they have since toured the world (or parts of it) every year and are the most successful band to come out of Japan of all time (nowhere near the biggest inside of Japan of course). 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' is an anti-bullying song, the title translates roughly as Bullying, No More, Forever or Absolutely, which was why that was on the title card at the end - the lyrics are a lot deeper than the 'Gimme Chocolate' lyrics.

The best Metal song ever about stopping bullying forever (which is what IDZ means - Bullying, No More, Forever)! I saw Sabbath live in 1976, hundreds of Metal bands in the 44 years since and then I got to see Babymetal in Feb this year. Babymetal are the most refreshing thing I've seen in Metal for a couple of decades, probably since Slipknot came along and freshened up the tired old copies I'd been seeing through the 90's. Babymetal are a lot prettier than Slipknot though and make me smile with joy a lot more. 4:30 Yep, that's the Kitsune sign (kitsune=fox) to denote our allegiance to the Fox God and his ninja angels Yui and Moa and our Queen of Metal, Su. #NotaCult

I believe they are one of the most important inventions/innovations in metal, since the birth of death metal (or blast beat) in early 1990's. SU-METAL often reminds me of Rob Halford in SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE-DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH days.

this show put Babymetal on the map. this is their first big show outside of Japan. they were scheduled to be on a side stage but after Gimmie Chocolate came out and went viral supposedly the promoter bumped them to main stage. the girls actually thought there would be only about 5000 people to see them. they did not know how many til they went out on stage. if you watch the whole five songs they did you can see some fear in their faces but by the second song , gimmie chocolate, Su knew she had them in her hand. she got to the part in the song that she actually got the crowd to sing in Japanese with them. how confident do you have to be to have a foreign crowd to sing with them? and for the next three days their merch outsold everybody else. keep it up with the reactions. you will not be disappointed. every song is different and they do so many different genre of metal and make it their own.

They didn't have a record contract inb the EU or US yet, and 95% of the crowd had never heard their music before this set. But they won them over. Remember that these girls hand never even heard of Heavy Metal prior to joining this group and when explaining the rock hands to the girls, they kept messing up and making the Happy Llama hand gesture (Happy Llama, Sad Llama was a world wide 'meme' at the time that almost every child knew), so they decided to work it into the Babymetal "Lore" as the "Kitsune" (shadow puppet gesture for a Fox -Kitsune literally translates to "Fox"). Add a Shinto Deity to the mix, "Inari Okami", or 'The Fox God' and it all fits together. Put your Kitsune UP!! Po!

"about to murder someone face" LOL Yep, fans call it the 'Su-metal Death Stare' :-) Also mentioned Babymetal's first festival appearance outside of Japan the band was actually doing the sound check themselves because of language barrier/confusion. This is what got the crowd interesting/impressed even more before they even got started. This was also their biggest crowd at that time. They went from performing in front of maybe 15 000 people at the most to performing in front of 50 000 or something like that. The biggest surge of people who came to see a band this early on the day ever said the festival organizer. I do think a part of the crowd came to see them fail. Really curious what Babymetal would be like. These were definitely not just fans. But pretty certain they made many, many fans that day. This show had a lot of international music press which really got the ball rolling.

Quote from our QUEEN… “I am so honored that we are confirmed to play Sonisphere Festival UK,” declares SU-METAL. “There are so many different types of artists playing this festival but I hope to deliver a one and only, unique style metal - BABYMETAL - even to those who will see us for the very first time. This will be our very first time in the UK, which makes us nervous, yet excited just imagining what type of people will come and see us, what sort of show it will end up being, and whether the audience will enjoy our show. We’ll hopefully get to see Metallica-san’s performance again after witnessing them at Summer Sonic festival in Japan which we are very excited about.” This is where history was made that day for BABYMETAL the way they won over the crowd. To hear the crowd chanting WE WANT MORE at the end must of made them very happy. And YUI-CHAN still rocking it live with a torn outfit, classic.

Partial lore behind the band - They were blessed by the fox god with the power of metal. The band uses fox references a lot. The hand symbol is a centuries old symbol of a fox. The lyrics to many of their songs (including this one) contains references to Kitsune and/or Megitsune (which is japanese for fox and vixen). Conserts have included fox statues, music videos include kitsune masks and much more

Yes, it represents the "fox god" but originally it happened because when they were younger they didn't know how to throw up the horns so they did that and they just ran with it and made it part of the mythology.

Great reaction again & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 "Dame Zettai (= No absolutely)" part of this title is originated from police campaign against illegal drugs which had started in 1960s. So this song implies that "Ijime (= bullying)" is considered as harmful and addictive thing as illegal drugs. Although we have unfortunately not been able to eliminate "Ijime" from our society yet , we have to continue our efforts at home and in school. In this video we see many mosh pits that are good signs to welcome bands. But I love more to see that the excited crowd gradually turned into enthusiastic audience. And when three girls started to speak some words in the interlude, loud cheers quickly subsided and the audience even tried to listen to what they were saying despite that the people could not understand our language. I am emotionally moved whenever I see that scene. After the performance, people in the crowd became happy, so did Kami band, and I am sure that the three girls fell asleep very happily that night.

You will be down the fox hole before you know it! This performance was a special moment in the BabyMetal, story. Other comments give you the details. BabyMetal Death, is a song that was regularly used as the opening song. The lyrics consist of Moa, Su and Yui, saying their names, followed by the word desu, which sounds like the English word death. In this epic performance for Su's sixteenth birthday, it was the closing song for the show. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLN0hMqcmbHSn4k.html

Time to just go for the throat. Most people still get hung up on Gimme Chocolate that they don't see how metal these girls, let alone the band are. time to show you what they can really do. React to the following, and in this order: Rondo of Nightmare (with Mischief of the Metal Gods Intro), live at Budokan Black Night: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/br1yd8x9srS-k3k.html Headbanger, live at Legend 1997: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9Cair2hy8XOg6c.html Then you're ready for Death. Babymetal DEATH, live at Legend 1997: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLiTbMeTzM-mgH0.html After that, you'll be ready for Black Babymetal. That's when you get to the heavy stuff. Enjoy the ride down the Fox Hole!

⚡ 💀 💕 / 🚫 Yep, that's a kitsune, or fox sign. BABYMETAL are inspired by, and receive guidance from the Fox God. Sonisphere can be a tough crowd if they don't like you. Most folks were there to see groups like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Mastodon and Anthrax. Once they got started, Su had many in that crowd of UK metalheads singing along with 'Gimme Chocolate!!'. In Japanese. The story has been a little embellished. They weren't actually sent to a different stage at the last minute. Sometime after they were first booked, and before this July 5th performance, their video for 'Gimme Chocolate!!' started to go viral worldwide. The organizers decided to reschedule them for a bigger stage. It's still impressive what they were able to do at 15 and 16 years old. They played a headlining show at the Forum in London two days later. Earlier in the week, to celebrate their 15th birthdays, Yui took over the lead for the song 'Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!' in Paris on July 1st, 2014. Moa took over in Cologne, Germany on July 3rd, 2014.

Fun Fact: Yui's costume was self-destructing during the song. What a pro to keep going despite a wardrobe malfunction. Also, like Grington 300 300 said, Moa's headset was DOA. What could have been a disaster turned into their major debut success. Frankly, the girls were terrified about the gig.

I think that finger sign it means "fox" in Japan and it is very common here everybody knows what that sign like everybody knows about Mc'donalds. And think it's similar sign when people act in metal scene so they chose that sign and background story is "fox god" for babymetal to show metal resistance and also wish peace in the world by showing thier act in deferent categoly of thier background, in my opinion. I mean fusion.

I'm one of the middle age metal heads I first heard of babymetal when Rob Halford sang pain killer and breaking the law with Sue metal. When that metal God endorsed them by doing a duet to 2 of his pinnacle songs I was hooked I love the music complexity and meshing. I've always loved the metal feminine voice mix (nightwish ect) and they command without a video it's amazing

@meimemeime

Nice Reaction!! I may not be able to explain it well in English, but I'll try to write about Sonisphere. The BM was originally scheduled to perform at the sub-stage(few Thousands of audience), but due to many requests, it was moved to the main stage in a hurry. Audience of main stage estimates range from 55,000 to 60,000. Most of the crowd had only heard BM's name to some extent and the actual fans were only a few hundred in front of the stage. I think it was a battle itself for the teenage girls, as this is a big, full-blown metal festival overseas, and if they don't like it, a lot of plastic bottles are thrown to stage. Here's what SUMETAL has to say about this Sonisphere festival. ------ Maybe it was because I was trying to look at the audience at an angle, but there were no people in the audience at all, and I was talking like, "What am I going to do?". But that was just because I couldn't see the audience from the angle, and when I went out on stage, the audience was there. "There are people here!" And then it got interesting. The audience in front of me had their jaws dropped to the floor in plain sight. They're like, "What? What? What???" they looked like. I saw that and said, "Okay, let's do it!" I thought. I think this festival has given us the confidence to tour abroad. We believe that our music is one-of-a-kind, and because it's one-of-a-kind, it can bring the world together. ------ With each song, the crowd's cheering circle grew wider and wider. If you look at the crowd's reaction after the song was over, you can feel their Kawaii METAL that makes you smile and feel happy and brings the world together! I'm sure you all will comment on the content of the song, so I'll just say a few things. This song is a message song for those who is bullying someone and People being bullied. This is the dialogue section in the middle. いたみ(itami) = pain 感じて(kanjite) = aching ずっと(zutto) = all whe whileg ひとり(hitori) = alone 心(kokoro) = heart 気づかない(kizukanai) = pretending not to notice もう(mou) = anymore 逃げない(nigenai) = I'll never get away いじめ(ijime) = bullying だめ(dame) = no 絶対(zettai) = absolutely I hope you continue to enjoy your BABYMETAL. Put your Kitsune🦊 up! from Japan. (Translation by DeepL)
