No disrespect to any other vocalist, and especially my other favorites. However, Queen Su is just so angelic. She is simply head and shoulders above anyone else for me personally. Years of training and dedication went into developing that voice. You’ll get many interpretations for the meaning and inspiration. The first was as a granddaughter of a Hiroshima survivor and growing up in the city. Su-Metal has mentioned the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Others point to the lyrics as a love lost. Whatever inspiration Su used, it is simply about moving forward after experiencing hardship and a desire to rekindle what is lost. At least that is my interpretation.

"Whatever inspiration Su used, it is simply about moving forward after experiencing hardship and a desire to rekindle what is lost." This says it all to me. Probably the simplest and most likely explanation I think. It is very emotional but, also uplifting.

It got me to bro! Su and Moa been doing it for 10 years. There are videos of Su singing since around 5 years old. That's why we call her Queen Su! Moa has a couple of songs too. Moa Banger (head Banger with Moa singing lead) They are all very talented. Suzuka (Su-Metal) Moa (Moametal), Yui ( Yuimetal) and now Momoko (Momometal) Yui left in 2018 for health reasons. I saw them live Aug 30, 2023 in Houston. As well as being very humble, polite, respectful, and very appreciative of there fans. That's why we love them! They are the originators (Su only 25) of this genre. Another reason called Queen Su. Now Band maid and others have followed.

@@old_5-O Thanks for the reply and adding information. I was blessed to see them at Makuhari Messe earlier this year, then Dallas, Vegas, and LA. I really wanted to enter the Lottery for Yokohama next March, but will already be in Tokyo for one of the other bands in Feb and can’t afford to stay an extra 2-3 weeks. I’m now kicking myself for not entering and simply finding a way. Love this group. ❤️🦊

🦊🤘🌐 Nice double reaction back to back. BM fans already know this type of unique acoustic version like Akatsuki Unfinished Version live at Legend 1997 or "The One - Stairway To Living Legend", so we're used to this SuMetal's vocals power to reach and melting our hearts. Fans at Sabaton's Europe Tour as well Asian/Australian Tour and more recently at The Babyklok Tour and more festivals around were enjoying the original version of this song at every show and having a magical moment. The three white figures dressed in white are probably a reference to old BM era when YuiMetal was still part of the group or maybe a reference to the new young BM unit they previously performed along with them and are part of this new metalverse project, they already debut at Summer Sonic Festival opening the festival with a set of new three songs exclusive for them. When they released this Piano Version the new official member wasn't announced yet, that's why you only see the two of them, after this the official announcement they released another acoustic version of a song called "The One - Unfinished Version" and they included MomoMetal, the new official member in it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this and see you next time.🦊🤘🌈

Martainmetal, I agree with you 100%. Mr. McCoy should react to the original lyric video. Mr. McCoy may also benefit from paying attention to the imagery in the video. Rarely, do you see a video with such stark differences. We see cities being turned from thriving metropolises into twisted metal and concrete rubble, all the while, Babymetal sing of hope, love and positivity. They remind us that no matter how long the night, morning will come, and color will return to the world.

Great reaction again. The meaning of the song is open to interpretation, it may mean something different to each person and it may even mean something different to each person every time they hear it. I agree with the suggestions that you watch the lyric video and pay attention to the visuals in that. The figures in white in this video - they were providing backing vocals/harmonies on the "ohohoh" parts of course, but there is always something more to it. We don't know who they were (we can have an educated guess). They may have been a reference back to when BABYMETAL had been a trio and a hint that they would become a trio again very soon, but I think their being dressed in white was possibly the most significant thing. BABYMETAL have performed dressed in white two times before this (3 if you count the 'Karate' official video) and each time it was at a significant turning point in their own history. First time was at Legend Z early in 2013 for the last 2 encores. This was their final performance as a sub-unit of their parent group Sakura Gakuin before BABYMETAL separated to go their own way as an independent band in their own right. Second time Yui and Moa started the Legend 1997 (December 2013) concert dressed in white making a theatrical offering of neck braces to the god of metal (represented by the statue in that concert). Legend 1997 was the final step of their separation and becoming independent band. The whole concert told that story of their transition and in particular of Suzuka Nakamoto's transition, giving up her life and existence as a JPop Idol and sacrificing herself to be reborn as the Metal Goddess Su-metal. If you include the 'Karate' official video - that was the lead single for the second album (2016) and that was another big step as they moved on from the first album which was nearly half full of songs they had originally released with Sakura Gakuin and started to explore more metal genres musical styles. So here we see figures in white again ... and this was just before the "new" BABYMETAL was revealed with Momometal joining Su-metal and Moametal to make up the new trio.

what makes this even more special in my opinion is the fact that this was for the channel First Take. their thing is to have groups come in and perform their song but they only get one take. no redos, no stop and tune it better, no second takes. if you hear at first with Moa her voice sounds a little nervous but good. not many singers can perform the whole song in one take and get the feelings she put into the song like Su. like many others i have heard this version so many times but still get watery eyes. i just love the phrase "no matter how long the night the morning will arrive". that is just so positive and the last phrase just smile is so uplifting saying just be positive and it will all work out.

This song gets me EVERY, SINGLE, TIME. Ever since the original release (visualizer/lyric video) before the album was released, I get choked up. The story of going thru the dark times and wondering if the sun will ever come up while showing (what I interpret as) comparisons of what Hiroshima (Su's hometown) endured, just hits me in my soul. "At the dusk of Ragnarok what are we to see? No matter how long the night, the morning will arrive" while showing an image of the Hiroshima Surving Tree in the middle of complete destruction is so powerful. Then this version comes out and I just absolutely fall apart. Honestly was worried about seeing them perform this live and how it might look to see a 50 year old man sobbing at a metal show, but I held it together for the most part

Okay, so, I have no idea what the intended meaning of this song is, but I can tell you my theory - which is based on the imagery in their official lyric video for this song (link below), the lyrics themselves, and a couple of other things. When I first saw the lyric video, I immediately thought that it was from the perspective of a Hiroshima nuclear bomb survivor. The imagery shows a desolate landscape that very much looks like historical photos of Hiroshima after the bombing, and there are also shots of destroyed buildings. Additionally, the video has umbrellas all over the place (including a destroyed one at the beginning), which is likely representational of the nuclear fallout and also the futility of seeking any protection from the nuclear "storm." Further, the lyrics mention Ragnarok, which I imagine is very much how survivors of the attack felt about the bombing - it was the end of their world. The hopeful parts of the song represent the resilience and hope of the Hiroshima citizens in the face of such unimaginable destruction and the hope for the return of life and color to the colorless desolate landscape of the city. The final seconds of the lyric video show the rainbow colors desired by the narrator of the song fulfilled, and end with a rebirth of life in the form of a tree and greenery in the shot. Su-Metal is from Hiroshima, so I'm betting she has parents that grew up during the post-war rebuild of the city, and maybe grandparents who were bombing survivors that lived in the city at the time - this song probably hits deep for her. Anyway, that's my take on what this song really means. Here's a link to the official lyric video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNaAdbOCusqqqGw.htmlsi=yjzhwI6WarzLJaVp

100% agree. The song is from the perspective of the child who can only understand the detonation as a firework, it's brightness so absolute that it robbed the sky of colour. Fireworks traditionally are shot upwards, but in the video you see the firework falls like a bomb before exploding above the city, just like the A-bombs detonated 1,000ft above the ground to maximise impact. The second verse captures the hopeless aftermath of a shattered city with no power, radioactive black rain through the following nights and people left stranded, alone. The tree at the end is a direct reference to the Hibakujumoku (survivor trees) that survived the atomic bombings. There is some real pushback from some fans who will say the video is unrelated to the lyrical and an independent artistic choice. They will also cite Su stating it's a light song. I understand why they, and she don't want people to think the song has such a dark tone, because the truth is, it doesn't. As much as the song sets the scene of suffering and hopelessness it is indeed a song about joy and hope. I just personally think those things matter more when you have felt the opposite.

Nice one! You are absolutely correct, Su's angelic voice just pierces one's soul. I am pretty certain she knows Jedi mind tricks, after all, she is a master of crowd control 😆. All jokes aside, Babymetal usually is vague about the meaning of their songs as they want the audience to interpret it in their own way. Monochrome is about overcoming a catastrophe and moving forward with a hopeful vision of tomorrow (What will we see at at the dusk of Ragnorak to We will paint the night sky in rainbow colors, just smile). After the "Monochrome Fireworks" line, the song progresses from "HOW will we imagine the colors of the night sky" to "we will imagine the colors of the night sky" to "WE WILL...paint the night sky...", showing increasing resolve towards a hopeful tomorrow. Epic song all around, both versions! 🤘🦊

Su's training helps not just in range of voice but of emotion. Babymetal takes far more elements of Theatre then any other group out there. When Su is on stage each song has it's own emotion and story, she acts and emotes to that story. Su-Metal is a character on a stage she turns into the character the song requires. Its like a musical for them not a concert. The song for Su she was very confused that people saw that much deep or dark meaning too it as she saw it as an uplifting song.

Some people say this song is about the tragedy of bombing. If we consider that SU-METAL was born in Hiroshima, we can suppose that this might be the metaphor of the atomic bomb. When they play this song on stage, they project on the backdrop the monochrome images of something black falling from the gray sky. Like merciless bombing.

Great reaction, again, thanks. "Monochrome" is a very complex song lyrically. Extremely poetic, built as an allegory with several metaphors and layers of significance. As suggested, watch the lyric video and pay attention to the visuals so you can get your own interpretation. But remember the final lines: "We will illuminate the world in rainbow colors. Just smile." About the three mysterious figures, at the moment they released this one, earlier this year, they were still a duo and hinting aggressively about the addition of a third member, which eventually happened on April 1st. 🤘🦊

Add that into Su and Moa's vocals and it becomes an epic level song. You did as Su has said "Don't Think, Feel". IMO the basic meaning of the song is don't give up hope for a better tomorrow. Because "We" can make it that way. A shining example of their strong positive up lifting messages that many of their songs have. And another reason why folks say I listen to Babymetal because it makes me happy.

I'm sure others have mentioned this about the meaning, but it has to do with the atomic bomb dropped on hiroshima. Su-Metal is from Hiroshima so you can imagine what it was like for her growing up with that history underneath her feet. It's about so many things, but one of them is about how no matter what horrible things may happen, the sun will always rise (aka Japan) and there will be a better day. So just smile.

To me the meaning of this song is very simple. However it could mean something else as well. To me it's Su metal paying homage to the poor people in Hiroshima Japan who endured the warmth and the heat of the atom bomb that was dropped on August 6th 1945. Many people feel the same way I do that this could be a second meaning and that someone finally sang a song about this horrendous day and the history of life on this Earth, (Hiroshima is Su metal's home town) This is why this song sits so heavy

That was a really good reaction, pretty much the same as mine when i first heard the song. The 3 girls in white are part of the new (not yet revealed at the time) Metalverse group, a spinoff from Babymetal's lore. Miko Todaka in the middle as the lead singer, Sakia Kimura the one on the right, and Kokona Kato on the left. As some people speculated the three could have represented the future of 3 members again in Babymetal. Metalverse has performed Doki Doki Morning and Karate with Babymetal earlier this year in 2 seperate concerts to the complete utterly surprise to the audience. I think you should watch No Rain No Rainbow from the Legend S Baptism XX concert. The concert celebrated Su-metal's 20th birthday.

If it was just anyone, they would have had the tallest standing in the middle to create symmetry since there were only Suzuka and Moa. And they would have just used three people whose heights would have been closer together. The heights of these three figures correlate with Miko, Sakia, and Kokona's heights in relation to each other. I doubt we'll ever get true confirmation on something as frivolous as this. Now they can depict various images by just singing and project them into the listeners' brain to move people emotionally. I can't explain why and how but Su's voice resonates with the bones in my whole body while there are many singers whose voices come to my heart. Thank you BABYMETAL. And thank you Koba, the BM producer, for your serendipity. Some 13 years ago, you certainly discovered something amazing and sacred for us. First course she sings something like "what colors can we imagine in the sky" second is "imagine rainbow colors in the night sky" third is "illuminate the world with rainbow colors". As the song goes on it becomes more colorful and the music changes from minor key to maggiore key through the song

You have not commented on "from dusk to dawn", this has only been done live 3 times. Su-metal sings in falsetto for 2 verses and yet again shows off her abilities as a singer; my current favourite.... until I listen to another song from Babymetal.

Andrew explains the meaning and background of the lyrics in detail. He explains the meaning and background of the lyrics for other songs by Babymetal in the same way.

No intent to discredit Andrew's videos but he explains what he believes is the meaning of the song. He has no more insight to the actual intent then you or I have.

@@autohmae I've never actually seen Andrew's interpretations so who knows, we might have the same feelings about it. All im saying is he isn't the official lyric interpreter.

Su's voice is amazing, but Moa is also a great vocalist when she's EQed properly. On some studio tracks and live shows they seem to have applied EQ to try to keep her sounding like a kid. I hate that - she's a very capable young woman.

Moa has a pleasantly warm, well rounded sound to her voice when she sings. It's a nice complement to Suzuka's powerful and piercing voice and adds variety in the sound in a song. I mean, what can we expect from the Angel of Love? ha ha!

Monochrome was written as a tribute to the bombing of Hiroshima in WW2 . Su Metal is from Hiroshima and you can tell this song means a lot to her .

Just want to say a couple of things. First off, Babymetal is probably my favorite band of all time at this point. Before Babymetal it was TOOL or Amon Amarth. Then Babymetal came along and stole the show. Su really does have an amazing voice and the band has amazing talent. You mentioned this one hit you a bit in the feelies. While I know why you say that, this one, in my opinion, isn't their most emotional song. If you'd like to REALLY see what Su is capable in terms of conveying emotions through her singing, check out Akatsuki Unfinished and No Rain, No Rainbow Baptism Legend XX. Those two are probably the most feelies intense songs. This is my first time on your channel, so if you've already reacted to those my apologies. There's also a couple other bands/singers you should check out that you'll probably really get a kick out of. The first is my other favorite singer. She's a Filipina named Morissette Amon. Her voice is also right up there with Su's. I'd recommend her rendition of Never Enough on the Wish Bus and her rendition of Wanna Know What Love Is. She also has her own music and she is also a master at conveying emotions. For that I'd recommend her song Could You Be Messiah One Take version. The second suggestion that I think you'd really like is a band called Wagakki Band. They're another Japanese band that fuse traditional Japanese singing and instruments with modern instruments and music. They're a very interesting and cool band. As a first song I'd lightly recommend wagakki band homura akatsuki no ito. Very cool song. Anyhow, I'll be looking forward to checking out more of your reactions and seeing some more cool stuff!

so i'm not sure on the particulars of the song, but i found it meaningful that the official video clearly references the nukes dropped on japanese cities. there's a lot of bleak shit and then the women, Su, Moa, talk about rainbows and there's a hopeful message. just smile, which is Su's last line here maybe a mistranslation.... any jp speakers? seems overly hopeful given context, but maybe that's it?

That has never been officially confirmed. It is speculation based on the lyric video visuals and Su stated in an interview that she was surprised that fans were interpreting it that way.
