A piece for string ensemble that doesn't even bother to have parts for the violins? What a dream! 🤩

The original is for two viole da braccio, two viole da gamba, violoncello, violone and cembalo. Bach’s interpretaties of your dream.
@bobbwc7011
@bobbwc7011 3 жыл бұрын
@ijdoti Bach was a fan of the Bratsche (German name for Viola) and loved playing it. There is also a little controversy about this concerto; the parts for the Gamben (Gambe is the German name for the knee-violin / Viola da gamba) appear to be too simple or too meaningless compared to the rest of the composition. The Concerto no. 6 is known to be the oldest of the Brandenburg concertos, so there is speculation that it might have originally been a piece of traditional chamber music, a so-called Trio sonata for 2x Bratsche and Continuo, and that the rest of the music was added by Bach later where he recycled older material for some of the Viola da gamba sections.

The third movement is something straight from God to Bach. The syncopation. In my top ten favorite classical works. A DJ called it something like "carefree rollerblading". To me it is the music of the spheres, Bach's evocation of the passing of time in the turning of the seasons or the drifting of the universe. Insanely beautiful.

I (a drummer) was tapping time in 6s towards the end of the third movement when I got caught when JSB dropped a half measure. The passage continued, repeated - and he did it again.

That’s Hildegarde “Hille” Perl. I found this bit of history about her de Gamba; “The man who gave it to me found it in a cloister in Tyrol in the year 1952-apparently it had been lying in the attic for a few hundred years. I am so lucky it found its way to me and I hope it will play on, long after I am gone. I know that in the year 1953, Ingo Muthesius brought it back into playing condition: He had to make a new neck for it but kept the original pegs and the lion’s head. The rest of the instrument is pretty much in original condition, except of course for the string holder, the fingerboard, and bridge.” stringsmagazine.com/violist-da-gamba-hille-perl-on-her-instruments-venerable-beauty/

Bravo!!!

Well the "baroque trumpet" they had on concerto no. 2 is not period accurate because it has intonation holes, which didn't exist historically. But it doesn't affect the sound maybe that much and you get much better intonation so it's not such a bad trade-off.

Does the first gambist remind you of Morticia Adams(Adams Family), or is it just me? Seriously though, I love this piece.

I like the cellist with the raven black hair (Hille Perl). She's gorgeous. Regardless, it really is remarkable how Bach created such a sense of tranquil yearning here, against all usual logic, by the exclusion of violins.

Iain Robb In my opinion, it was actually simple but genius to exclude the violins. Naturally, they have a more brilliant sound, making them not as good at calm relaxed music.

+Iain Robb She's playing a bass viol (viola da gamba) The gamba parts are actually kind of dull by gamba standards, but her part is a bit difficult because in mvt 3 it is high in the range. In other words many notes are played beyond the frets. Both gamba parts are actually better suited to tenor viols since the tenor viol is a bit higher and could avoid those unfretted notes. :-)
