Commencing in 1951, Stokowski became a truly international conductor by visiting as many countries as possible during the spring and summer months, while remaining in the USA for the autumn and winter concert seasons. In 1967, his summer European tour took him to Paris, London, Monte Carlo, Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm. He took with him his own symphonic transcription of Bach's organ Toccata and Fugue in D minor and for a special 30-minute TV show played it with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He appears to have been in one of his severe moods in this performance, though for the other item in this programme, Stravinsky's 'Petrushka' Suite (also uploaded here) he seems to have lightened up somewhat! ... Here is the link to 'Petrushka' ...

Just to listen at already elevates the spirit... the transcription to Orchestra is superb... That also shows one the real power of an organist. The number of voices he controls alone and the dynamic at his hands

I worry that people have forgotten about Stokowski, 45 years after his death. I don't know if he was a great conductor or interpreter, but he was a true visionary in terms of orchestra sound, media, etc.. Something Karajan then honed to a sharp edge. I love these Bach transcriptions, whether actually done by Stokowski or, so I have heard, by Lucien Caillet.

There are many Bach arrangements by all sorts of musicians but here is one by Lucien Cailliet. It's an old recording but comes from a CD devoted to his various transcriptions ... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lZ-ioJCEmL6ll30.html

I will never forget. I was exposed to Stokowski when I was a baby and that has stuck with me forever.

I wonder if Stokowski was pleased with this performance. I loved it but I just can’t help but wonder.

I think at 8:12 you can hear the piccolo come in early lol. It's funny to know that these high level musicians make the same mistakes we do sometimes.

Yes, it was the opening item in the movie. Stokowski was the conductor then, as he is in this video from some years later.
