Leopold Stokowski's orchestral transcription of Bach's Toccata and Fugue for organ is probably the most famous of all Bach arrangements, having been widely popularised in Walt Disney's "Fantasia." It was splendidly played at the First Night of the 2000 Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall by the BBCSO. For this performance, Sir Andrew Davis followed in Stokowski's footsteps by conducting without a baton. As will be seen, he clearly enjoyed the experience! ... It was preceded by Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" ... • Copland 'Fanfare for t...

This is absolutely the best presentation of this piece of music that I've ever heard. And it's one of the finest pieces ever written. It does not get much better than this.

So well recorded. Listening through earphones is a treat. Actually Davis' version is even more dramatic than ol' Stokowski's himself. After knowing "Fantasia" for 50 years, you get to know the subtle differences. BRIAN

One of the very first 'movies' I saw as a kid (~4 years old) was Walt Disney's Fantasia, opening with this piece. It's always had a special place in memory ever since.

Bach with Leopold Stokowski's orchestral transcription. A pure 'gift' to us all. It's 1:37am in the morning and I am playing this work and just plain enjoying this precious piece of music. It is a work that I have truly surrounded my mind with whether as organ, vocal, string or in brass transcriptions. To think that this wonderful gift can be consumed as aural excellence by all of us is truly a blessing. Just a plainly delicious feast to be partaken of by all of humanity.

Yes totally agree with your comments. How daring of Stokowski to even consider transcribing the most iconic organ work ever written. And if it hadn't been for his collaboration with Walt Disney on Fantasia this interpretation may never have seen the light of day.

Fantastic full orchestra performance of the most iconic composition for the organ ever written. This transcription was originally created by Stokowski for the movie Fantasia. Both Disney and Stokowski were criticised by the classical 'purists' at the time as insulting to Bach the composer. I watched Fantasia in the cinema as a young boy and was mesmerised from the moment this opening track began. Every child should watch Fantasia as part of their education!

This was always my favourite song and animations from the whole movie. Ever since I first saw it when I was 3 or 4 years old, it has given me goosebumps - EVERY single time. I feel as if the players of the violins, violas, cellos, and double basses are bowing the strings of my heart. It's one of those pieces of music that moves you from the depths of your soul to the tips of your nerves and courses rhythmically through your veins, spreading emotion through your body. As for the animations, I loved that they captured the fantasy conjured by the music - it's sort of like how I always visualised music, with colourful, abstract environments in my mind. A vivid "other world" that exists in your mind. I'd love to see another Fantasia featuring works from the master composers of the baroque, classical, and the romatic eras. I'd especially love to see a Fantasia segment of Pablo de Sarasate's Carmen-Fantasie and Ziegeunerweisen (probably spelled wrong) famous violin with orchestra concertos. I saw Fantasia 2000 in the cinemas when I was 10 and while I appreciate that they used a greater variety of music - for the people who like other things - I prefer the music from the original movie more. 2000 didn't grab my imagination and stir my emotions like the first did. I think that movie was one of the main things that inspired me to start learning violin - I was obsessed with wanting to learn the violin as a kid and finally got to start when I was 8. But sadly I stopped practising regularly after about a year of fervently loving it... And gave it up by the time I was 12. Turns out I had ADHD so no bloody wonder I could never seem to stick with things! I ended up dropping out of school in year 11 after completing almost no homework all through high school. But there's no point in regretting it - I'm about to start lessons again (still have my old violin, even though it has stayed in its case for over 20 years! It's full sized but I hope it's still playable - it'll need new strings at least). No one is ever too old to learn an instrument and even if it takes a bit longer than it would for a child, there are other benefits being an adult has - in my case ADHD treatment, more self-discipline, a greater understanding of my learning styles, and a stronger understanding of why I want to do something! Since I've managed to keep learning Chinese for a few years and am reaching goals I quietly doubted I'd ever stick around long enough for, I'm a lot more confident that I'll be able to keep practising now - or more importantly, pick it back up if I do have a dip in that routine. It takes several years to even produce a tolerable sound on the violin but it's so worth it if you can get there - beautiful, beautiful instrument. As a kid I resented the sound I made when practising, but now I realise that EVERYONE sounds bad for at least the first 3 years - and that's if you practise every day with an effective practice regime.

J.S. Bach was a musical genius, but never knew the grandiosity of a symphony orchestra, writing only for organ and small ensemble chamber music. Thanks to Stodowski we can all appreciate the magnificent glory of Bach's inner vision, Hopefully he can somehow know of it and look down in great admiration.

Just found this fantastic performance. Top marks to Sir Andrew and the orchestra for a faithfully performed rendition that Leopold would have surely enjoyed. The power, precision and dynamics created here took me back to the original Fantasia movie with Stokowski conducting in his unique style. There may never be another musician of his calibre.

This is the BEST performance and recording I've heard of this incredible piece of music so far. I LOVE this piece and have been listening to so many versions. I'm glad I found this version on youtube, as I first heard it on ABC Classic FM and immediately felt the power wash over me. The ending particularly is just extraordinary and almost debilitating in it's crippling beauty. Love JS Bach - but love Stokowski even more.

Johann-Sebastian Bach wrote BWV 565 at a time when orchestrae were not standardized and the organ was the most available instrument for polyphonic and contrapuntal works. Stokowski retained some of the tonal contrasts from the organ in this orchestration.
