Great review Sam. Have been thinking about getting a Class 20 myself so would definitely be interested in seeing how this one compares to the new tooling when they're released. I'd heard that Bachmann updated/upgraded the chassis on these a few years back and now they're retooling the body to match that standard and make use of the lights, etc. Not sure if that's true but might explain why they're redoing it 😃

The 20's passenger work was mainly Derby - Skegness, Leicester - Skegness, Burton-upon-Trent - Skegness (noticing a theme here, Sam?) Birmingham - Skegness, Sheffield - Skegness and rarely Leeds - Skegness summer Saturdays. Oh, and to break the theme, occasionally piloted Class 47's on Glasgow - Stranraer boat trains.

They worked mainly on freights coupled with the cab ends front & back to improve visibility. They appeared at Devons Road 1D to work cross London freights. Many were on shed at Toton 18A MPD and were a common site in pairs on the leeds - Bristol mainline. Tinsley 41A MPD had a regular allocation. Information supplied to help modeller allocations.

Hi Sam That noise sounds the same as my two Bachmann Deltic class 55s You will need to remove the driveshafts and check the ends for plastic flashing on the connecting ends, The quality control here is really poor, Trim them up so they can engage properly at the fly wheel end, some grease and should be good, If it had lights you wouldn't bother upgrading it Nice model

Nice one Sam. I have been on a class 20 hauled passenger train. Back in the 80's and early 90's I used to travel to Skegness a couple of times a year. The trains from Grantham to Skegness were nearly always DMU's, mainly class 114's, but on Summer Saturdays you would get some loco hauled relief trains, normally class 25's or 31's, but on one occasion we got 4 Mk2 coaches hauled by a pair of 20's

Hi Sam ! Great video, I recently found an old Hornby Inter-city 125 at the back of the shelf , it had not ran for a year and when I tried to run it sparks flew and smoke poured out so I dismantled the motor and cleaned everything then re oiled it , I also found something called Autosol metal polish and I cleaned the metal clips that held the gears and springs in place, the motor looked like it was fresh from the factory and ran like a sewing machine!

Great Review. I like the class 20 it was one of the early BR diesel successes. It looks better in the original green. I lived by the North London line at Gospel Oak when the first of these turned up one morning - D8000. A strange new sound, very loud horns, no yellow panels yet. They were allocated to Devons Road shed (1D) which was mostly Jinties and a few North London Railway 0-6-0T which were used for dock shunting. A few of them went to France and worked between Auxerre and Autun in Burgundy, where they were painted in a gold livery. It would be good if there was an unpowered one available as they so often ran in pairs nose-to-nose.

The advantage of having the cab towards the rear is that there's a lot of locomotive protecting the crew in the case of a collision, however with the cab running first, there's more visibility, thereby making it easier to spot things obstructing the line and taking action to prevent crashing into them. On the Southern Pacific, they ran into the same issue: cab-forward locomotives got into accidents less frequently, but when they did, injury to the crew was more common.

They used one of these in Goldeneye as the spooky evil villain train with the explosives on it or whatever it was x3 If they were slightly taller it reminds me of the Combine loco from Half Life 2. I'd like to see you get the new one to do a compare/contrast type review if you are able to could be pretty interesting to see ^-^

I've watched your video with interest as I own the Locomotion Models 2015 version, produced for the NRM. It is the old tooling but it looks and performs well. As far as I can see the only real difference of mine from the original is the number (D8000) and maybe some minor livery alterations. My model is also sound equipped. I have the new Bachmann D8015 on order and it will be interesting to see what difference the new tooling makes. One improvement will certainly be lights on the new model. I await your review in due course !

The Class 20's really are amazing machines. Once the real things got newer liveries they just refused to show their age. It's still a pretty impressive model. On a model railway layout people would probably struggle to tell how old it really is in the distance. It's devoid of some more modern features of course but if the best of it lives on in the new tooling it'll be very impressive. I definitely want to see you review the new one.

The large build number of 228 locomotives between 1957 and the mid 1960s was due to the disappointing performance of many early Type 1 locomotives on British railways, the class 15s & 16s suffered from mechanical problems.

At the price you paid from TMC it is OK value. I might go for one while they are still available. The Lima 20 wasn't that bad really apart from odd gearing that made it lurch forward when starting and a tendency to throw traction tyres. Never found this to be a problem with other Lima classes so not sure why.

I'm still waiting for someone come out with a class 20 tool of D8188 as she was in Bond: Goldeneye, mocked up as a Soviet armored train! D8188 had a steel nose cone, wheel skirts, and one-inch armor plating fitted ; she pulled two mk2's, same armor, one of which housed a computer database, and the other a missile & helicopter. Scenes were filmed at Nene Valley :p

Hi Sam. Sorry to 'call you out' on the cab, but it seems to be at the rear of the loco (cf steam locos) with the drivers' seat and controls facing forwards. So, to run in the opposite direction, the drivers would need to have their back to the controls; how does that work (somehow not the same as running a steam loco in reverse!)? Flywheels? The loco seemed to come to a pretty quick stop!

Not half bad loco, I would say its sad to see it go but maybe new one will be better (or it better be better) so i reckon Sam intends to review the new one too for comparison? at least thats the idea i feel implied by the opening. Which gives ME an idea a versus series of locomotives in similar price range doing similar things from different manufacturers example: a short powerful locomotives such as terrier vs something functional similar (yes even same ones from different makes make sense).

It might be the physical age of your loco (or it was a Monday Morning build) my dad had one on his layout bought in the mid 00's and was a fantastic DC runner. Once warmed up he could leave it crawling with a train for hours on a run with elevation changes, it was quiet and was consistent. it was usually a game of when visiting him trying to guess which tunnel it would appear from, as he would set it going and leave it while tinkering with something little more problematic. He did add the code disks to hide the moulded lights though.

Mine is growling too. That is the only noticeable drawback I have with her. Hope they will fix this on the new model. I tough it was a problem when I get mine running for the first time. In six monthes/one year, this would be a good deal as a second hand model. As is, a decent model, you can tow trains with her and she works fine. Let's see what their new model looks like... As usuals, the price is skyrocketing from a generation to another with Bachmann.

Hi Sam, I'm not really into diesels - just have two on The AnneliesVille RR - but this would be a good 'shunter' on DCC without sound for the motor makes enough noise. Yes, an investigation is justified ! All in all this loco is not worth a penny plus. Bachmann is just insane with the new prices. In that case it needs be perfect quality even with all the tooters and bells! But for Chinese made ... very doubtful ! Thanks for sharing & greetings.
