Couldn't resist getting hold of one of these Caledonian Railways Class 812s from Rails of Sheffield. A very early birthday present!
Need some CR coaches now... and more storage space...

I'm not a model railway enthusiast but I couldn't resist watching this video when this lovely model caught my eye. I also feel chuffed that I figured out early on what the detached piece was for (it was at 2.20 when I spotted the gap between the engine and tender)! Was anyone else worried that he might lose the piece? 😂

Bought two of these, original and BR version. I also have the DJH kit built one in Caley blue but the Bachmann is far superior all round and worth every penny when you take into account the time I took to build and paint the kit. The accuracy is excellent and all the research and site visits to check the original have to be paid for somehow.

Oh well Bill you have it now! I set a rule that i would never pay more than £75 for a loco when i returned to this hobby after a 35 year break ! But for my Birthday in Oct last year after always having Lima class 37s ( £30 -£40) i thought i would treat myself to a Bachmann class 37 (£150).Now i know what you mean is it worth that amount of money? So like you i bought it as i wanted it,would i buy another probably but only as a treat for a Birthday or Christmas present.But enjoy your purchase after all you are only here once :)

ah we scrimp and save and if there is a very special loco.. with me it was the HELJAN cLASS 52 Western Pathfinder which was the first western I saw at Birmingham Snow Hill in 1962 while waiting for a train to Paddington. The western crawled out of the tunnel heading north like an apparition in splendid brand new maroon then another maroon loco a Hornby 'Duchess' 46245 City of London which terrified the living daylights out of me and my brother a we train spotted ta Harrow foolishly on the up fast platform as it thundered towards Euston. my brother an di were in shock for minutes afterwards.. there are some locos you just have to have while you can...your loco has beautiful livery and runs sweetly always a plus with a new loco.. hope you enjoy your new loco for many years to come..

I got one of these, too, in as-built livery. In hindsight maybe not one of my most sapient purchases. I just couldn't resist the livery and archaic look of the loco. The loco being Scottish was also a big plus. That said, the mechanism could be better. I intend to replace the coreless motor with a 5 pole regular one and complement it with a flywheel. Thank you for sharing, and happy birthday for March! (edit) An understanding wife is such blessing, I'm lucky to have one, too.

Running in shapes the faces of the brushes that contact the commutator and burnishes the scintered bronze bushings (if it has any) and pulls a little oil up to the surface of the bushing. It also evenly distributes the grease on the gears.

Possible solution for the drawbar issue? If the stud the drawbar hooks over is reasonably thick, get a small, short screw and make a washer (wider than the stud) from plasticard. Drill a pilot hole for the screw, put the washer over the small screw and screw it in. This should retain the drawbar in place. Lovely loco - some Caledonian blue 4 wheel coaches would go well.
@oobill
@oobill 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. I may well do just that to sort the drawbar. For coaches I want to get the old Triang Caledonians.

I have to say, if the manufacturers could make it, ship it and sell it for 150 pounds then they would! Unfortunately shipping costs have risen by 400% in the last 2 years and manufacturing costs have risen sharply too! We can’t do anything about that, apart from now buying new! But boy, what a superb Loco, which I know will get you years of good service and enjoyment! Great unboxing video!

It's a lovely looking loco Bill and as you say a perfect fit for your layout👍. It's what I think of as an indulgence loco where your heart rules your head, but I think we all do that from time to time and it's nice to have the odd flagship loco on your layout. Being more objective there's no doubt it's hugely overpriced, especially when you consider the Oxford Rail J27 can be had for £86, though it's black livery doesn't remotely compared to your splendid beast! There are 3 things about Bachmann locos that personally put me off - all of which you touched on: 1) Their rip off prices. I don't think Bachmann can justify charging £114 more than Oxford Rail for a prettier livery. (not that Hornby are any better after their recent 20% price hike). 2) Their mechanisms are sub-standard, especially considering what they charge. 3) Their loco-tender connection which as you say isn't secured like Hornby's. Dapol's push in ones look the best design of any manufacturer on paper, although I haven't tried it myself. So would I buy one myself? To be honest I was sorely tempted because they are lovely looking things, both blue liveries look fantastic, but in the end I decided there was other stuff I'd rather spend £200 on. If the price tag had been £120-140, or if it had a decent mechanism and tender connection then I'd have succumbed. Like you I normally buy second hand, although I've been getting DCC ready models, which still aren't that cheap, though I've nabbed a few bargains. However I've also succumbed to the odd special loco. For me it was splashing £170 on a new Coronation class Sir William A. Stanier last year and then getting some nice complementary coaches for it. I want to add lights and passengers at some point. One good thing is that like you said the class 812s will probably be snapped up quite quickly and even when they do start appearing on the second hand market I suspect they'll keep their price for a while and perhaps go for even more. Anyway hope you get lots of enjoyment from your early Birthday Present. Of course now your wife will expect something just as indulgent in return....😁

Nice loco Bill, if a tad expensive. I find a bit of plastic tube or wire sleeving, of the right size, pushed over the peg on the tender, solves the problem of the drawbar without drastic mods. Regards Alan

I’d seriously think about adding some real coal to that tender.. A dusting over some PVA across the moulding if it is not removable, or a better job reproducing a partly emptied bunker if it is. One small lump pulverised will do a lot of models. Once you’ve done one you will want to do them all!

Well, I didn't expect you to get one of these, given the kind of thing that you usually go for. I was interested myself, chiefly through the LMS connection, as my family worked for the LMS (and before that the Midland). But I didn't pre-order one, as the price just seemed too high. However, when they didn't sell out in pre-order, and were available for immediate shipping, I weakened, and bought one... which I haven't got yet, since it has to come over the ocean to me in Canada, and who knows how long it will take on its way. I bought the LMS black version - obviously the least pretty, but, as I say, the LMS is my family railway. Everybody hates those loose Bachmann tender connections; I don't know why they still use them. I was rather dreading when you came to remove the brake rigging, as Sam's (of Sam's Trains) fell apart when he tried to remove it. If you're particularly interested in the Caledonian Railway, you may be interested to hear that I have a clock, a large floor-standing pendulum clock, that used to be in the signal box at Bellside Quarry, Bellside Junction on the Caledonian Railway from the 1880s until the 1980s. Many of the signal men have carved their names or initials and dates inside the door. It still has a British Transport Police sticker from the 1980s on the outside of its door. I bought it at an auction in Canada (no one else bid on it), and I keep it running in my living room, next to my N gauge layout.

Like you , being Scottish I really wanted one . Fortunately my Birthday was early January! It is a gorgeous loco but I think over priced by about £50 especially when you look at the mechanism and compare it with Hornbys J36 (£135)that I think has diecast boiler or Oxfords J27 at half the price (£97) . She is gorgeous but i think Bachmann exploit that. If you remove fall plate I think you can get access to gears that way rather than taking motor and chip apart . The coal does come out . That drawbar is a pain . It’s the same with the Precedent and Compound . It’s a Bachmann thing !

@PeterJewell2
@PeterJewell2 2 жыл бұрын
Mike, I think you would find on the prototype that it is attached to the loco, as an extension of the cab floor. (I was wondering how far down I would have to scroll before I saw someone mention 'fall plate' rather than 'foot plate'!) Thinking about it (which I hadn't until just now) it it were fitted to the tender, the leading edge would be likely to catch the driver's and fireman's feet as the loco negotiated curves, which would be pretty dangerous.
