An affordable sound-fitted model? Of Britain's most powerful freight steam locomotive? Could it be? Yes, actually! With Bachmann's 32-862ASF recommended retail price of 350 Pounds, the example showcased in the video costed less than half of that! But, does that price point still represent a model for keeps? Well, you've read the title haven't you?

"Violently neutral." Love it! All 3 of my 9Fs are Hornby tender drive examples, 2 being silver seal versions. They all still run superbly and navigate the tightest of curves, and will pull pretty much anything and everything I throw at them (after a change of traction tyres). They are poetry in motion. Always good to see a range of reviews. As long as people "speak as they find", and give a balanced opinion, then they are most welcome.

My Hornby railroad 9F at £109 runs really well, so I think for practical purposes at 3 ft distance, it is the best 9F.

Videos like this are really important because, just like you said at the Dublo Flying Scotsman video, you don't always need the newest model. There are many older models that are actually fine and, in some cases, even better than the latest offerings. So it's always good to know about them

Oh nice! a new Flying Scott video! Also on that Hornby 9F, I actually have the super detailed Evening Star from Hornby. And yes, while it does slow down around corners at times, 2 years into my ownership of the loco and it still runs rather nicely. Although, that Bachmann 9F does look very good, especially with the weathering.

I was lucky enough to get the Hornby 92097 with Westinghouse pumps at my local model shop's summer sale. It's the best locomotive in my collection. I was looking to find a Bachmann one, and will probably acquire one a few locos down the line.

Fuc|< what any certain KZfaqr thinks. Make up your own mind. Nothing wrong with this model at all. In fact, it's a brilliant model, in my opinion.

My guess is that Sam got a dud, as everyone else has had a perfectly good one. The point issue may just be a lack of back EMF control in the DCC decoder. I'm sure if it mattered that much about the torque, a cheap replacement motor, or rewinding the current motor would fix the issue. As for the drawbar, the only issue I see is that the wire connection point is terrible. The plug should be inline with the drawbar so that there is no 90 degree bend (which is where they always fail) and so that the wires aren't very visible. A normal goal post type drawbar, while not as good as a kinematic one, is good enough and less fiddly than dealing with many of the more contemporary integrated designs.

I think he had a mix of a dud and he said in his video he didn't give his engine a run-in so it was probably stiff

The motor with the 9F and B12 is also the same as the J15, I believe, as well as the new Standard 2. I think the trend I have noticed is the older motors tend to be good but the newer ones are suspect. But then again I have a motor in each category that is the opposite of the trend. Albeit, the bad old motor was second hand. It is a shame, because when they work they are great motors.

If it's the J15 motor, mine works superbly, one of the best runners I have.

Yep I had a B12 with a crappy motor, got a spare from Lendons. It now runs as well as the J15, which is superb, so both great.

Is the railroad 9f any good for budget modellers? I heard bad things about the railroad black five with the heavy weight on the tender, and I'd like to know if the 9f is fine

As long you're fine with minimal details and a little bit of judder on slow speeds, it's great. Especially the Franco-Crosti variant.

Railroad 9f is superb for the money, make sure you get the dcc ready version as its loco drive with the 5 pole black can motor that is possibly the best motor and bomb proof.

It's also a re tooled chassis in both tender and loco. Therefore tender hasn't got the old ringfield cast chassis and is liteweight..

Sam had some issues with his 9F, I do believe his was probably faulty but in total fairness to Sam all he can do is review the loco he received. One other thing to consider is that Sam was also running his on analog instead of DCC so that could have also had an impact on how the loco runs in terms of torch, as on DCC full voltage is going into the track, where as on analog the higher you turn the throttle the more voltage goes into the track.
