Bachmann Vs Heljan Class 45 Peak review and running.

We take a look at Class 45/0 from Bachmann and Heljan.
Both are now Dcc fitted. Bachmann has a 21pin Gaugemaster decoder. Heljan a 21pin Dapol 6 function imperium decoder.
Bachmann RRP - £159.95
Heljan RRP - £189.00
Both of these were purchased from Chrs' Crafts and Model Railways in Plymouth second on for £104 each. The Bachmann one was purchased at the beginning of the year whilst the Heljan one was purchased a few days prior to filming.

Hi, great honest review of a great loco, I’m not a fan of Heljan loco’s because of their build quality, I have recently got my hands on a Bachmann RTC livery class 46, I have upgraded the 8 pin pcb to a 21 pin pcb and fitted factory directional lighting which looks superb, I will fit independently operating cab lighting as soon as I can along with a Legomanbiffo sound decoder and speaker, thanks for sharing.

Good review and I do like your railway. Personally I wished they had done a better paint job on the Heljan. Its the Blue. Kind regards, Rbert.

I run a fleet of Bachmann class 45’s and I was thinking I would sell them off and upgrade to Heljan models. The first Heljan arrived and was returned the next day. It simply was good enough. I ended up buying two more Bachmann class 45’s and a class 46. I think the Bachmann model is good value for money. If you ever had the older Mainline class 45 the the newer Bachmann model is a real blessing. For me I am sticking with the Bachmann class 45 as the Heljan models are just not a good enough jump to warrant the change.

Agreed. All my class 44 and 45`s run brilliant. All weathered and sound. For me heljan locos are OK, but some of mine are rough, bits fall off etc. Bachmann all the way for me.

For the money, the Heljan 45 just isn't good enough. It has a high spec, but its rather poor on fit and finish, and in places like the roof grille it just isn't finished at all. Its all well and good having extra detail, but it helps if that detail remains attached to the model. The iffy shade of blue isn't helped by the etched roof grille and panels next to the name plate being painted a different blue and glued on wonky, and the paint join of the yellow nose is really messy. I bought the Kernow edition of Medusa, its really not a good model, the factory weathering makes an iffy paint job just plain worse before you factor in that you just have to look at it for bits to start falling off. The Bachmann model isn't perfect by any means, but at least it is by and large of better quality.

Bachmann one all day. I have 2 peaks D1 & D27 sound. Going off Heljan big time and I have loads of theirs

Really enjoyed your video, good to get an unbiased view on these models. Personally I would prefer the Heljan but these are both out of my price range although you seem to have got them for a reasonable price. Looking forward to more from you 😀
