Did he actually offer practical examples? I heard only motherhood statements. Pain isn't all in the brain, at least, try telling my brain that. I get spasms of excruciating pain and I didn't get them from listening to health services which don't exist in my corner of the country. I got it after a fall, me with an osteoporotic spine. Tell my spine it doesn't need to take care. I walk daily, a stretch daily, cycle stationary 10 m daily, yet the spasms come, esp after a bout of movement. I wish this guy had something practical to teach me.

As a PT student it is so frustrating being told 100 different things when it comes to back pain. I think most of us have realised by now that pain does not equal structural damage. But we need new guidelines for rehabilitation and how to locate the actual issue. Even if it isn't structural. Because right now we're not learning how to deal with this problem. Love the video btw.

Dr. John Sarno figured this out long ago. Successful treatment at NYU for nearly 40 years. The cause is unrecognized psychological tension. No one wants to hear that, but Dr. Sarno's approach works.

I have to say that the current biomedical model is defunct. The psychosocial model is the new model. We should asking not what wrong with you but more like what has happened to you. Sadly the medical model is about pharma and cash. We have ignored the talking therapies and the pdychogical perspective of pain. John Sarno was well ahead of the curve and still is. A two session lecture and giving the patient responsibility as apposed to 65k surgery and the surgeon drives of in a Porsche. I'm a heathcare professional.

I have watched your video with interest but having struggled with back pain since 1997 (initially after a fall through floorboards then in 2010 after a traffic accident ). It took me six months the first time & five months the second time to brave going back out into the world and then returning to work. But back I went & I got on with my life, declining the surgery that I was told would be the ‘only’ thing that could help me. I dealt with the pain in a range of different ways, I went to stress management & relaxation counsellor, I went to an osteopath and a Chinese acupuncturist to aid my recovery (I’m a mother of four, worked full time, attended college part time so how could I just give up!) the pain has never left me. It goes through times when it is excruciating and some times not as bad but I can honestly tell you that it has ‘never’ left me. Part of my studies have be in psychology & I have a diploma in counselling. I have studied theories of pain for many years, the pain response, Somatosensory Cortex, Allodynia, Hyperalgesia etc, etc. I wish there were an answer that fitted everyone but I feel I actually know, from my own experience that ‘there isn’t’! I’m not sorry that I have carried on living my life and doing things I want to do. I am a Grandmother to 9 who range in age from 25 to 4 years so, needless to say, my life has been a full one, just never without pain!

I would very much appreciate an explanation for that. That was wonderful to see those individuals turn their life around. I'm 46, I have a history of trauma and injuries and I work as a physical therapist assistant. The narrative "brace your core and be careful how you lift" is passed out as often as MD's pass out scripts for pills and it perpetuates the pain cycle. It's like driving with the parking brake on. It seems the key is to engage the muscle of the body not brace and force into submission. I do understand the value of correcting postures, movement patterns and muscle imbalances to help bolster and protect the joints, but what made such a huge difference with these individuals. I would like to know as I have back pain and have bulging discs, facet arthritis and an annular tear and I'm tired of being in a holding pattern and watching the days go by and not doing the things I enjoy.

I’m studying clinical exercise physiology, and our lecturers are referring us to these videos to guide how we manage our patients with pain. Peter O’Sullivan’s work is gold, and I highly encourage everyone to rethink their pain - is bending/lifting really going to cause pain or injury recurrence, or is it a pain belief system that needs to be addressed? Sometimes our beliefs about pain are like a self fulfilling prophecy...
@anonanon2572 жыл бұрын
Greetings from Canada where I trained in PT. I realize that you have contributed to challenging many very traditional beliefs closely held by many, and I know there are a few others who seem to share some sense that change is necessary, but I have to be honest, I don't know how much hope can be realistically afforded PT in moving into the future. Nicholls, others use a vocabulary that is completely foreign to 99.9% and that is only related to his background in sociology. The psychological aspects are yet another domain that seems completely alien. Listening to Oliver Thompson et al, on Words Matter is both fascinating, but again, as if a completely different planet. How do you keep going? Thanks for posting info.

Finally someone who knows that doctors don't treat causes only symptoms. This also applies to a lot of other things such as depression, bipolar etc etc. The medication keeps them trapped in it. Doctors are not interested in anything else. Medication is big business all over the world!

Physio’s I have seen via the nhs have worked wonders for me, but my pain wouldn’t have disappeared without me being very disciplined in completing my ‘prescribed’ exercises, only bug bear, physios don’t ask about how comfortable our furniture is, so you still need others help and advice, or end up buying something mediocre in terms of helping, but I am certainly not taking away the incredible help I have received from all the physio’s I have seen. They appear to be following this subject matters expert, school of thought, so how widespread is the dissemination of this knowledge over the past decade?Thank you.

Thank you for this video!! Not enough medical professionals talk about the role of the sensory motor system in chronic muscle pain - whether back, neck, shoulder or hip pain. Muscles LEARN to stay tight due to our movement habits, thoughts, activities and emotional stress. This is called Sensory Motor Amnesia. And these "amnesic" muscles cause pain. Teach people to restore their internal awareness and control of the muscles and movement is freer, more pleasant and pain-free.

One minute these people are talking about their back pain on a very poorly miked stage (can barely make out what they're saying), the next minute they're bending over and jogging. What changed? Can someone better explain this to me? Is O'Sullivan's suggesting that because pain is a perception (not musculoskeletal), in the context of back pain, that if you just change the way you think about your back, the pain will subside?
@Pain-Edcom7 жыл бұрын
Changing the way you think about your back and your pain will help your pain although there is sometimes other factors involved which will also need to be altered to help your pain further. Changing the way you think about your back can increase confidence and self-efficacy and reduce sensitivity, catastrophisation and fear avoidance which have been shown to reduce pain

Very good information . One of the things I disagree with. I think its generally bad to slouch in chairs. Surely decent sitting posture is important. I agree with a lot of fear being created about back pain.
@Pain-Edcom5 жыл бұрын
There is no evidence that sitting upright is good for or prevents back pain. Personally I have seen a lot of people who have back pain who try sitting upright and it contributes to the maintenance of their pain in the long-term. I also have to slouch when sitting personally because if I sit upright I start to develop back pain. There may be some people who get pain when slouching but we should not prescribe what we think is proper sitting posture for people
