In today’s episode, I’m building a pedalboard for my brother Adam! Adam has been doing a killer job soldering all of our Vertex cables, so I decided to let him take his pick of pedals from my collection so we can build him his first pedalboard!
For his rig, we’re focusing on the basic elements of a good pedalboard: Overdrive, Modulation, Reverb, and Delay. I’ll shoot you some helpful tips for building your first (or millionth!) pedalboard!

@@VertexEffectsInc Tips on how to tie all the DC and audio signal, what to do and don't do would be very appreciated. Also i'm curious if in your experience there is a way to optimize space with pedals like TC or Source Audio where the cables are on sides and not on top like strymon.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 3 жыл бұрын
@@luischi5136 Won't matter if you tie together DC and audio cables, only AC is a problem with the audio lines. There's no real trick other than just planning out everything in advance so there's no surprised you've not accounted for in your layout. Considering jacks for DC and audio and the size the are and space they take up is critical in your planning stage.

That Ibanez UE300 is an interesting concept. It would be cool if you tried to make something similar but on a larger scale. Gut a bunch of popular effect PCBs and solder all of the input/output leads in line. Then mount it in a metal chassis with holes for the switches and knobs. It wouldn’t be practical, but I would like to hear/see it.

So jealous of this board. Super rad choices. Even some vintage tones on there. I always thought power cables needed to be wired centre negative?

We’re just wiring the cables it doesn’t change what’s on the power supply internals is the amp. Since these cables aren’t shielded - just two conductors - were just matching both sides 1:1. This is what is shown in the video.

I build my own pedalboards (ok I mostly use pedaltrain boards now because of the transportability is superior to the old chunk of plywood & velcro I used to use!) & they're simple because I use old Marshall Plexi's (original not reissues!) & everything goes in front because of no effects loop!! My secret is making sure you use isolated power (I love the MXR isobrick) & good quality cables!!! Ok,they're not as pretty as your productions but they always work!!!

@@VertexEffectsInc Well when it comes to pedalboard building I'm no professional!! I've got a wealth of experience of playing in loads of different musical situations which has been a 30years plus & still growing learning curve!! You get to know what works & what the least amount of stuff you need to carry around,because let's face it venue staff want you in & out as quickly as possible!!This has made me think over the years about what I need to get away with the job in hand!! My basic bare bones setup is a (from guitar which is usually a Fender Stratocaster which has been heavily customised too give me Gibson tones as it's loaded with a Dimarzio Paf Pro & 2 Dimarzio Cruisers & a Wilkinson vs100 tremolo unit & roller nut & locking tuners which is perfect for keeping me in tune!!) Dunlop Wah,Boss TU2,Boss Compressor,Ibanez CS9 Chorus,Boss Flanger,MXR Phase 90,Ibanez TS808,Boss DS1 & the truly incredible Electro Harmonix Hot Wax (this gives me the core of my tone!!!it's incredible & I've tried them all & this is instant history of overdriven Marshall in a box!!) Boss DD3 & Boss DD2 (short & long repeats) & a Hardware reverb (influenced by the late Gary Moore for those spooky moments.By the way it's pretty good too!!) & this either gets plugged into a old Marshall Plexi 100watt or 50watt,Vox AC30 or for a more compact setup a old Rivera R30 which is incredible as it's got a Vox style voice (channel 1) & a Fender style voice (channel 2) & why ever Rivera discontinued them is totally criminal,as these are the ultimate pedal platform amplifiers (mine (I have 4!!Here in England that's a rarity because the distribution of them was terrible & now you can't buy any new Revera products this side of the Atlantic!!) & I've tried everything!!) & over the years I've experimented with different speakers as the original Celestion was rubbish (a 75 watt & it didn't please my ears!!) & so I tried various Eminence which were better,then a EV which gave me power but made the amplifier heavier than the Asian Continent!! Now the basket in there is a Celestion Creamback which is super light on weight (great for transportation!!) but huge on tone & volume throw & has all the best bits of the Celestion Blue & Greenback!!!!! Again cables are important & I either use Dimarzio,Orange,Fender,Planet Waves,Klotz,Bareknuckle or any other top draw cables & they're all soldered!!! My pedalpower is either a MXR isobrick,Voodoo Labs pedalpower or TheGigrig Generator (again depending on what pedalboard I use!!) & the thing is they all work perfectly!!!! They might not look glamorous like your products,but they function & do a job which is perfect for me!!!!

Mason - loving that a UE300 is being showcased! Question on Powercon vs. IEC connector - Powercon is a great connector with it's locking format, but you are tied to that cable. Is there a benefit over IEC? Thanks!
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 3 жыл бұрын
UE300 is great. You will need a powerconn end to power the board on the board side, but a standard 3-prong AC on the other side going into the wall. There is no advantage of using the IEC vs. Power Conn from a powering standpoint. It's just that the D-Connector for the Power Conn doesn't require a specialize punch out like IEC does. D-Shape connector punch is round so anyone could drill this without any specialized punch out.

I am building a pedalboard currently. I plan to put a multi-effects processor on the board with some of the pedals I have, that can't be reproduced by the multi-effects processor. So, I am guessing that my Ravish-Sitar pedal is one that is better than what a multi-effect processor can do. So, I haven't bought the multi-effects processor yet. I am figuring there are other pedals I am unaware of that would give me a better balance between small pedals vs multi-effects.

@@VertexEffectsInc When I plug the pedals in directly to the amp individually there is no hum, I wire them with an individual 9v power supply, but when I hook everything together in this order, Tuner, Cry Baby w battery, Archer Ikon, Zen Drive, Ibanez mini Chorus, MXR Carbon Copy, to Amp is when the hum show happens, I am using a Voodoo labs pedal power 2, So for example yesterday I was playing through the Archer and the chorus and the Hum was minimal, when I switch to just Zen Drive and Chorus Minimal , when I engage both the Archer and Zen Drive the hum is ridiculous, I also live in a building with bad electricity I think, so I have one of those wall hum killers, also the hum is way more noticeable when I play my telecaster vs my Gibson Sg, I just bought a JHS Legends of Fuzz smiley and wondering how that will set everything off, I also have a Fulltone Mas Malo which creates so much hum it is not enjoyable, I practice in my apartment and have to keep the volume below ear bleeding or aggressive mellow.

Dear Rig Doc, I really like your KZfaq videos. They're both entertaining and informative. My next guitar project is to build my own pedal board to increase my range of available sounds. Unfortunately, I really have very little experience with pedals. Due to my limited experience with pedal brands I am leaning towards the following brands: Boss Ibanez (Tube Screamer) MXR Electro-Harmonix DOD/Digitech (attacker FX54 pedal) Dunlop (crybaby, fuzz face mini) Do you have any suggestions with these brands or any specific products I should use. Thank you for your time. Nathan

@@VertexEffectsInc I would think it would be nice to have in case for the future. Everything after the chorus is stereo ins and outs right, or was the interface mono? If I was in your bro's shoes I know I would prefer to have it wired for stereo, if only for the chorus. I thought that was going to be why you used the effects loop on the multi-unit, to have the drives+volume in mono and everything after split. But seems like if he opts for that in the future, it won't be too daunting a task for him to whip up a few additional cables to length 😉

I have just recently stumbled upon your chanel. I would just like to say I love what you do here. Just my two cents here: if you are skeptical about uploading mods to KZfaq I would love to see "educational content only" even if paid patreon content. Seems like you know so much more than what I am able to see and I just appreciate somebody standing up to the industry and saying there's better and cheaper ways to do things right. Much love from across the country and so long as you keep uploading ill continue to show my support. Thanks.

I got a board I got like 15 pedals.. I never put them on the board successfully. It always sounds terrible. I wound up taking 2 or 3 pedals to gigs and putting them on the floor! I played for years, most of them with no pedals, just amp and guitar. I need to understand this stuff from the extreme basics..
