Today I am doing a quick look at the winter squash growing in the Back to Eden Garden. I have the Waltham Butternut Squash and the Red Kuri Squash growing on the wood chips of the Back to Eden Garden. Not only do the heavy wood chips keep down weed growth, but the soil under the chips continue enriching with the decomposing chips. The winter squash send roots down the entire length of the vines to pull up the nutrients from the rich soil under the chips. Last year I grew the Striped Cushaw Squash on the BTE garden, but there were so many squash that we still have some in the freezer and decided to not grow any this year.
