What is your preferred type of comfrey and why?
@ohio_gardenerАй бұрын
I grow the Bocking 14 Comfrey because it is a hybrid and does not spread by seed like the native Comfrey. I cut it about 4 times a year to use it for mulch or making compost.

You have a beautiful garden. How deep did you dig for laying the Pipes? Also, what are the flowers? They are beautiful!
@ohio_gardenerАй бұрын
Thanks! The pipes are about 8" deep, which is enough to allow for walking on them or pushing a wheelbarrow over them, but not deep enough to prevent freezing. Since I blow the water out of the lines with air in fall, freezing is not a concern. Those beautiful flowers are Peonies.

I thought it is that whole process of pyrolysis (removing all those gases from burnt coal) that makes char. You merely shredded charcoal and got charcoal powder.

Today, April 30th, I pulled 6 more slips off of the sweet potato and put them in the water to start rooting. Then I chopped up the potato and put it in the compost tumbler. I now have 15 sweet potato slips, and only need 8 so I'll be gifting some to a friend to grow his own sweet potatoes. 🤠

Fabulous! Thank you. I have one that came up on its own. I’m going to try this, not sure if I should wait a year or try it this year?
@ohio_gardener2 ай бұрын
Whether or not to split it depends on how big the plant is. If it has multiple crowns growing, it is safe to split it. If there is just one crown, it would probably be good to wait another year.

Breathtaking. I've planted 2 25 ft. Rows this year I hope mine produce so well. Any tips would be appreciated. ❤
@ohio_gardener2 ай бұрын
No special tips. As long as you have a rich, nutritious soil with lots of organic matter, the beans should do very well. For year I grew Blue Lake Bush bean with very good results, but after I built the arbor I planted the Blue Lake Pole Beans and I couldn't believe the beans on them - they produced three times as many beans as the bush beans did. So, now I am growing only the pole beans.
@terribryant19562 ай бұрын
@ohiogardener4019 I should be OK then. I grew up watching my POP plant blue lake pole beans and he always did good so that's what I know. I tried the bush 1 year and I was like nope lol back to pole beans we go.

very nice. greenhouse ever freeze? you have those tomatoes all year?
@ohio_gardener2 ай бұрын
Thanks! No, it never freezes. I have a small thermostatically controlled gas heater to keep it above freezing. Yes, we enjoy those tomatoes all year, except for a brief time when I take out the old plants, replace the potting soil, and start new plants. They are Tumbling Tom tomatoes.

Dod you leave the crockpot on all night?
@ohio_gardener3 ай бұрын
Yes, I let the leaves seep in the warm oil for 24 hours. I had to keep checking and adding water to the crock pot, though, as it kept evaporating out. A crock pot with a "warm" option would probably prevent that.

How many square feet of soil with that cover?
@ohio_gardener3 ай бұрын
Not sure. Since I already have some Biochar in all of my beds, I just use this to add to the compost tumbler to get it activated. I add about 10% charcoal by volume to the compost tumbler, then when the compost is spread over the raised beds the activated charcoal is added at the same time.

Why do you add the bees wax when coconut oil gets hard/solid when cooled anyways?
@ohio_gardener3 ай бұрын
Coconut oil liquefies at 75ºF, and does not make a solid salve at room temperature. The beeswax keeps it as a solid salve since it has a melting point of over 120ºF.
@decathlete20003 ай бұрын
yes it is not solid without the wax but still not liquid. You had to melt the coconut oil first, right ? So when it cools it will be as hard as it was before melting it... right ?@@ohio_gardener
