I have two folders in Synology. One for Time Machine one for syncing. With sync folder I don’t keep different versions because I have those in Time Machine backup folder. Sync folder is only for the latest and up to date version so I can access to them with my other devices. For instance I can edit a file on Synology with my iPad then I automatically find the updated version when I switch to iMac and resume there.

Thanks for bringing this up Jerry! Storing to a NAS using TM is definitely the way to go. I've never had issues in doing so. I suggest using the utility TimeMachineEditor which changes the hour scheduling Apple employs to something more to your taste...for example daily backups only. Just make sure that the TM folder storage allocation you set up is DSM is going to be enough for your needs. Now, Synology Drive I use as well....but only for the entire NAS backup setup on a schedule. Together, works just fine for my needs.

Thank you so much for all this hard work. I have a question, I had backed up by files using TM and after they were backed up, I decided to delete as much as I could from my computer because I wanted to regain some space on my computer, but after doing so and emptying my trash can, I went back to my external hard drive but I noticed that many of the folders I have deleted on my computer, became like "ghost" files, with a little thing to restore the files but it didn't work. My question is, can I delete files from my computer and after doing so, will I lose everything or will my files remain backed up on my external hard drive? And, are these files had, lost forever? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How do you handle having a LR catalogue that has photos on the internal storage of the MacBook Pro as well as an external hard drive? I sometimes have to access and edit photos from the external drive as well. In other words, is there a solution to use Time Machine to backup the internal 1TB drive and an external 2TB SSD to the Synology?

Thanks for this. I might try the Drive backup as TimeMachine has not been working for me. I have multiple file shares set up on my Synology using SMB and they are mapped in Finder. They stay there and work just fine as the computer sleeps and wakes, though don't auto mount upon reboot. On the Synology I also set it up to provide multiple TimeMachine shares for our various Macs in the house. When I enable TimeMachine on this computer that has the other shares, it will disconnect those shares as soon as TimeMachine starts making them unavailable. If I reconnect a share, then TimeMachine disconnects and fails. Over time, the disconnected shares and failure to connect will lead to the Synology NAS dropping off Finder and the only way to get it back is to reboot the Mac. If TimeMachine is not enabled, none of this is a problem. Originally, my TimeMachine was running on a different Synology account to my other shares. I thought that macOS might not be able to handle running two accounts to the same target NAS so I changed my credentials to be the same for both file shares and TimeMachine. However this problem of disconnection and losing the NAS remains. It still seems as if macOS treats the TimeMachine credentials as a completely separate connections to the shares in Finder (even if they are the same) and it can still only manage one connection at a time, so it will disconnect the Finder shares when TM is running and vis-versa. I'm at my wits end with this and currently my TimeMachine is switched off so I have no backup. Looks like Drive might be the way to go..

Using SMB and Timemachine will only work on the local network right? (without opening ports and port forwarding, which I don’t want to do) I know you can use Synology Drive remotely using QuickConnect, but it doesn’t do a full “bare metal” backup of the whole machine - just the data in the folders you pick at setup.

We backed up 4 macs and ran the configuration some years and experienced those problems at least 2 times. Our opinion: Not acceptable in a data critical or pro environment. The issue I found using Synology Drive was with some file naming conventions. It just won't back up files starting with a '.'. You can ignore these by setting the backup rules but not all your files will be saved. Time Machine doesn't have this problem and backs up everything.

Hey Jerry... I've been using a OWC 4 bay enclosure in RAID 5 since 2016 and I'm about to UPDATE to new hardware. I have a M1 Mac Mini, iPhone, Windows "beast' gaming PC, and have ordering a M1 MacBook Air (to arrived in a few days). My question to you, knowing what I owned, would you suggest upgrading the RAID 5 to a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure directly to the Mac Mini OR get a 4 bay NAS and hook up to my network? (btw I have ZERO experience with a NAS). My thinking is to go NAS (figure it out) thus in theory all the information will be available wherever I am (if a understand a NAS correctly). Your thoughts and thanks.
@JerrySchulze
@JerrySchulze 2 жыл бұрын
So, there is a lot there. First, if you enjoy your current workflow, and have a system that works for you with direct attached storage, I would just buy a new OWC enclosure and keep doing what you are doing. If....IF....If you are looking for remote access capabilities, ability to run other NAS apps not from your Mac, or you just love trying new things then I absolutely recommend the NAS. Unless you are going to be going 10GB, It will not be anywhere near as fast as a thunderbolt enclosure. The way I use mine is that I edit videos on my Mac and copy the files to the NAS when complete. I also use Cloud Sync to backup all of my OneDrive files to the NAS. The NAS is then backed up with BackBlaze B2. Let me know what you think.

@@JerrySchulze well, I'm going to continue looking, but one drawback to many NAS is they tend to have a 1GB Ethernet port, where the raid enclosure I currently have is Thunderbolt 2 (20gb) and the one I'm considering getting is a Thunderbolt 3/4 (40gb) thus the bottleneck would be the output of the drives and not the Ethernet. I can see more research needed, and decision to be made. Rattling around in my old 65+ brain atm is, perhaps both, but the NAS may be just a 2 bay.

Isn't the Homes folder setup by DSM? and the Home folder for each user, when you create a User in DSM, regardless if you install Drive? Installing Drive then creates the Drive Folder in the user's Home folder! Also, it's a probs a good idea to set a Folder Usage Quota Limit for the TM folder on the NAS? probs about 3-4x size of your Mac Drive, otherwise you run the risk of storage creep.

Out of the box you should be fine with a Synology NAS, as long as you have auto updates turned on. Where you can get into trouble is by opening ports and port forwarding from your router to gain access outside of your home network. But if you know how to do that then I’m assuming you wouldn’t be asking. I use Synology’s “QUICK connect” feature to access my data when away from my home network. Not as fast as opening ports and connecting directly, but you don’t have to poke holes in your home network and setup complicated firewall rules to connect safely.

My iPhoto library was on the second internal drive. I also was not storing all my photos in iCloud. @@user-pt2ir4zz1i how was the Mac "connected" to the NAS? And the NAS drives are much more likely to fail if they're constantly being turned on and off. I use Google drive and Google photos for the cloud. In June 2021 Google will charge $2. a month for 100gb of cloud storage (of which I will pay for and think is a good deal). After June 2021 Google photos will no longer have free unlimited cloud photo storage. I used to pay the .99 cents a month for the Apple iCloud 50gb storage but I never go over my free 5gb of iCloud storage so I stopped paying the .99 cents a month to Apple. I like Google's implementation of user interface for cloud storage. I don't like Apple's approach to user interface with iCloud storage. For my non cloud storage back up at home I have two external USB 3.0 docks with SATA SSD's in each dock. I manually copy and paste my data and content to the two external SSD's. I have a Synology DS120j. It's a heap of junk. The transfer speed is dire. And when you transfer a large number of files it at some point is guaranteed to stop transferring and you have absolutely no idea as to which files have been transferred and which not so invariably you need to start the process again but in chunks which is a pain to manage. As for retrieving files equally painful with all the same issues. My advice steer clear of this particular model. Furthermore, their website is all glitzy about the software applications but when it come sot implementing them it's horrendous. Instructions that are confusing and as for getting the right settings virtually no advice on that. Sure heaps off functionality that a Synology expert would find invaluable but even for someone who has been in hi tech and computing for 40 years I cannot believe they have the gall to promote it as user friendly.
