Fills are most commonly used to make transitions to a new section of a song. It's a great way to break things up and get the listener ready for the next shift. However, just because you're breaking away from the main groove doesn't mean you can't keep a groove going - and that's exactly what this lesson is all about.
Harry Miree's (aka "The Dude") is going to teach you how to keep the audience dancing with FIVE unique drum fills that apply to a wide variety of genres. Even advanced drummers are going to get a challenge from this lesson.

Love this concept and this dude so much. So often people hear “serve the song” and think it means “play as little as possible,” when the song can be served just as much from your creativity as your restraint. The point is that whatever you’re playing works together with the rest of the music, and that you never lose that sense of groove.
@TonyPerez816
@TonyPerez816 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Couldn't have said it better! The funny thing is, we know he is extremely influenced by the great Carter Beauford. And although Carter is also one of my heroes and favorite drummers, I think he is an example of overplaying much of the time. I have seriously seen Dave Matthews band probably about 35 times live over the last 25 years. And I'm always confused when he goes on these extremely impressive, but highly distracting chop sessions. I remember once at the end of "Ants marching", he played 32nd note "hertas" for like 24 bars. That literally killed the groove and the mood of the music and no matter how impressive the drumming was, it was awful to listen to. I think Harry strikes the perfect balance of flash and substance.

I even have the rack Tom 1 at front right, rack Tom 2 at front left, then floor Tom 1 at my right and floor Tom 2 at my left similarly to his kit. This helps me to keep the open hands sticking, snare L, Tom1R, Tom2L, Tom3R, then either land on snareL or Tom4L. Try to figure every drum fill you hear in pop music with this setting and I found it better for me.

YES!!! I'm so happy to see Harry's love for Carter Beauford integrate itself into so many different genres, and ultimately, success for himself. He also has the distinct ability of balancing outstanding drumming with a sense of charm that never manages to slip into doucheville; for all the zingers that he rattles off, you never walk out the other side thinking, 'nope, that didn't land.' I'm almost as impressed with that as much as I am his playing. "The sticking doesn't really matter on this one." My thoughts EXACTLY every time someone is trying to dumb down super advanced chops to beginners level. Like, sticking matters if you are practicing rudiments for the sake of improving your technique but don't expect bands and artist to write it out for you if you need to learn a set. And right and left hand sounds exactly the same.
@norskov
@norskov 5 жыл бұрын
Leotardoification sticking doesn't matter on that fill since you end with 3 triplets on the kick and have plenty of time for beat 4 and ultimately beat 1 of the following bar. Sticking certainly matters to make fills flow and not choke halfway or just before the downbeat.

20:00 this is it... This is why it looks like he has so much fun. Stylistic reference points. He's not obsessing over exactly how a drummer or he plays something in a specific song, but how do I internalize the feel and style of that song with my own skills (granted, you need already have a bunch of skills tucked away do that, which early on probably required obsessing about technique and notes).

stan_sprinkle true. I’ve heard more musicians say notes and technique aren’t important, but that’s easy so say when you already got that in the bag haha. Anyway, I totally agree with the premise though.

That hi-hat setup is what I need since i'm a left handed drummer who uses a right handed setup and i'm already used to use my left foot for the hi-hat. Good to see that it's possible.. 😊

Man I love these lesson videos. IDK why I don't watch them more. Almost all of these fills I didn't exactly know. But got them fairly quick. I've been playing for 16 years and I just learned how to better implement these into my beats. Thanks a ton you guys. Gonna have to make it a habit to watch these more often.

Harry’s channel is great.. I get my students to do this, keep the backbeat solid within drum fills. Super useful for other musicians & singers not losing their place in the song, especially if it’s the first time playing with new people or doing a short notice fill in gig👍🏼 Great Drumeo lesson vid
