In addition to extra food, I carry “high value” treats. Treats that she absolutely adores and will do anything for. So if I need extra motivation, or need to get her attention I have the extra yummy treats on hand!

A possible addition to identification could be a photo. I’ve always been told that it’s a good idea to have picture of you and your dog so if you get separated you have visual evidence that you are the actual owner of your dog.

I ❤️ Nala. I personally believe that human training is even more important than dog training. Humans need to remember that they chose to go on an adventure but the dog is taken on the adventure (without a choice), so the human’s duty is to make sure the dog is comfortable and content. Be prepared to rest whenever the dog says so and be prepared to carry the dog out if trouble occurs. Chances are good that SAR won’t rescue a dog in trouble. BTW, nice Starry Night.

Bear bell on your dog or some sort of noisemaker. Good warning for wildlife that did not pick-up the dog scent and a good indicator of location if off leash.

I hike, backpack, and roadtrip with my dog who's a little over a year old now. A carabiner is SUCH a versatile tool that he has his own lockable one. I use it for attaching his leash onto the car when we're eating in the parking lot, attaching it around trees at camp or during breaks, or even attaching it to myself or my pack. Making sure to have Benadryl/allergy meds is super important in the first-aid kit, too!

If your dog is like mine (Nala isn't), Musher's Secret is good to have for if you're hiking snow..especially if they have really fuzzy paws...it will keep them from getting snowball paw. Won't keep it off their legs but will keep them from having to stop and chew the snow out of their paws.

Once, we forgot the dog's food on a (car) camping trip. It was all packaged in individual one-meal bags, sitting on the table at home. Fortunately, it wasn't much of a detour to stop at a pet store to get more food, and then get a set of measuring cups at another store in the same strip mall. We haven't made that mistake again though. We've used old (retired) leather leashes as "water leashes" when going to the lake to play. But leather gets weaker when it gets wet, and we've had one break. Synthetic leashes are more reliable if they're going to get wet.

We car camp with my pup then hike the parks and trails. The camp sites require them to be leashed even on a campsite so I bring long lines like 20 foot, that I can hook her up to a tree but she can wander the site still. It's metal aviation wire with plastic around it and clipping ends to easily attach to her collar and other things.

Hi Miranda! I’m super glad you’ve been allowed to ‘work from home/can’ and show us things that obviously are super important to you and others. Scripted set videos can be great for some topics, but the more natural videos are super fun and can attract people who enjoy you, and your videos, and aren’t searching for a specific topic.

Yay! Just came here because I'm planning my first backpacking trip, and we're taking my dog Luke, and today I was hit with the big question of POOP. I was really hoping I wouldn't have to carry poop for 3 days and it's a relief to know that it's appropriate to bury just like our own. Thank you for illustrating the technique. 😁 I'm mostly working on #3, training. I adopted Luke early in the pandemic and nearly 2 years of social distancing made for a dog who is "afraid of the world." We're working with an excellent trainer now and exposing him to as many scenarios as possible so he can gain confidence and familiarity with some expected scenarios before the trip. Doggie backpack next!

My dogs use my old or inexpensive headlamps in couple different ways, they carry 2 ea. 1) attach just the lamp using sticky Velcro on the the back of lamp & attach the other piece to their various gear; front & back (generally have in front on 1 & back of other so I can see them coming& going) of harness, packs & their various coats & use what ever lighting mode (red for hanging at camp & white when they allowed to explore, Rottie loves hiding in shadows & jumping out at me). 2) putting headlamp around their neck (preferred method) or Velcro to harness chest strap. This works out wonderfully lighting up the trail in front of me for those cool summer night hikes. It's also comes in handy putting them in a sit stay position lighting up an area for setting up tent/ camp. I also have tiny piece of Velcro inside my tent, vestibule & car to attach headlamp when dogs not using. Con- if ur dog was an otter or seal in a past life like my Rottie who can't resist taking a swim u need to make sure u take batteries out & allow it to dry thoroughly. I have friends that use the battery fairy lights wrapping around neck, harness & pack. Those r great illuminating the dog & being able to change colors while at camp, but for night hikes wearing headlamp around neck just can't b beat

Rain wear for dogs is a must have if you are somewhere that gets cold rain or even just has a lot of dew on cold mornings. I still remember one trip we did where it was a cold morning and this pitbull got soaked from the dew on the plants and shivered for hours. Also we tend to mix some puppy food into our dog's regular food to up the calories without upping the weight. Freeze dried wet food is also a great (though expensive) option if your dog's stomach isn't too sensitive to changes in diet.

Going hiking for the thousandth time with one of our dogs Her name is Nirvana, she's 1.5 yrs old and she's a mal x lab Our other dogs can come here's why: Our oldest, Harley is a 16 yrs old aussie x German shepherd mix who can't walk long distances because she has arthritis Our middle dog, freyja, is a husky x wolf (low content) and is 6-9yrs old and tore her acls last yr and has hip dysplasia, she can actually walk pretty far but the hike me, Nirvana, and my family are going on is rocky and uphill, and we don't feel safe taking her sadly But they don't seem to mind too much lol

I’ve taken my German Shepherd on a camping trip and I plan to take him again this weekend. He is very spoiled so he goes “glamping” and I have a few extra things for comfort for him. Even though he’s a long haired dog, I took him camping and it got down to maybe the 30’s and he was shivering, so he has to wear a jacket now at night and wrapped in a blanket for him not to be cold (I got him a sleeping bag recently). He also didn’t have the best feet protection so he didn’t want to walk a lot, so I definitely recommend getting good boots! I also had something to attach him to trees or the ground (because it is required at some campsites) even if I didn’t think he would wonder off at all. I also just got him a tent that he can carry so that he has a place to get out of the sun and acts as a temporary crate for him (which he seems more comfortable with even though we don’t crate him at home).

I use EZYDOG products, similar to ruffwear except they are better in a sense because they have a better guarantee and strength level against their products and cost less. I am a *BIG* believer in you get what you pay for, so EZYDOG is good for leashes & collars. Ruffwear cant be beat on some of their *VERY* specific harnesses, like water life jackets, but you need to know the exact measurements of your dog or take your pet into a local retailer to try items on. It would be great if you spoke more specifically as an actual point for dog shes/feet protection. I use ALCOTT paw adventures for dog shoes. They are amazing, have breathable soles, & protect against heat and cold (I live in Phoenix, Arizona). Overall, great video, please talk more about DOG SHOES!!! Their feet are so vulnerable against harsh elements!!

Thanks for posting this! We just rescued an 8mo black lab mix a few days ago and our goal is to take her backpacking and camping with us. She's a nervous girl and we've got a lot of work to do regarding leash training, but we're hopeful we can achieve good voice commands and off-leash recall. She's super smart and the sweetest thing ever, but we think she was mistreated before we rescued her, so she's a really nervous and protective girl. I'm glad to hear that Nala is progressing into a great trail dog, it's very reassuring.

For winter hikes we always use Musher’s and avoid boots because they tend to get packed with snow. The first aid kit is definitely a must. I would recommend adding a tick remover, a couple of QuikClot pads and a couple of Celox hemostatic granules. I personally carry a SAM splint in case of a fracture, along with a roll of Coban and a rescue harness from Ruff Rescue Gear. The harness is essential for bigger dogs as side carrying would be exhausting.

I'd like to add an emergency harness to the list, something that allows you to carry your dog if he gets hurt or if you come across an obstacle he can't cross. Where i live there isn't much information corcerning wether an itenerary is appropriate for dogs, so there is always the possibility of an unpleasant surprise in the way. I've been in that situation once, i'll never put my dog through something like that again.

I would recommend the nylon service dog leash with frog clip from Ray Allen K9. It’s one of those European style leashes that are adjustable and convertible a few different positions. The frog clip is only what I can describe as “double handcuff” closing mechanism. It’s really sturdy, so much so that I think that I might break before it does.

I hike/camp with a French bulldog, he's good for about 12 to 15 k a day with max 500m of elevation. been looking into the k9 backpacks so I don't have to leave him at home on longer hikes. a place to put him when fording rivers and more gnarly parts of the trail. we bought the ruffwear sleeping bag / pad based on ur recommendation and he loves it.

I took my service dog camping with me recently and she and I shared a zero degree sleeping bag I think wallmart or Campbell’s but it was a life saver when it was below freezing and she’s also really good with commands and her being safe is so important to me which is why I take her being inside at night very seriously because where we live we have wildlife like cougars bobcats cyotes and more and I use the pee pad method at night and she knows to go there and it’s really easy for me to clean I just pick up the pee pad she also has her own bed pee pads food and water when I’m not home my mom always makes sure she’s on a leash. When I’m not home and I do the same thing and when I work long nights her and my cat curl up next to the space heater on her bed and I love your channel keep up the great work

Also you might consider taking a rain jacket for your dog. We had them for our show dogs to keep them clean, covered back and legs like a light cagoul (they have an open back end for poop and pee). Dogs have their own jacket but freezing cold rain for hours is not good. I know working dogs with rough coats work on high hills herding sheep but your dog may have a smooth coat and or not used to working in extreme weather.

I'm waaaay late, as usual- but Heartworm & Tick protection + paw wax + shoes are the big ones I can think of for hiking with pups. As a person who backpacks with dogs and was a vet tech for 10+ years, ticks are my BIGGEST concern. IF you're going bushwhacking or are going into the deep back country, also bring a sling + muzzle to carry your pup out in case of emergency (snake bite, broken bones, serious cuts). Be mentally prepared to leave your gear behind and lug your dog out of danger if needed.

My two dogs have GPS collars (FitBark GPS) but it only really works where there is cell signal. It provides some comfort, but I still keep them on leash basically all the time. If you want something that works outside of cell range, the Garmin Alpha seems to be the choice (but it's expensive!).

Isn't the extremely high level of sodium in bouillon cubes a big no-no?

Keep your dog on leash x1000! Not every human or dog (not to mention wildlife) appreciates an unfamiliar dog walking up to say hello. It helps keep everyone involved safe and happy!

Dogs drink from mucky puddles, streams and so on. Its what they do. They definitely need clean water to drink too that you provide. Dont worry about the drinking from mucky puddle thing as long as your dog isn't doing it out of sheer desperate dehydration. Dogs have a sense of smell and they know more than you.

One time i irresponsibly and accidentally ended up being kinda lost and without enough water for me OR the Late Great Jazz T. Dog on a day hike. We finally made it out to a horse trail and I knew how to get back to camp quickly from there. But at the juncture of our trail and the horse trail there was one of those nasty mucky horse puddles and of course Jazz drank from it eagerly. And he was fine. But it was not my finest day as a dog and nature lover. Will carry plenty of water and a filter for my inaugural backpacking trip with my ACD Luke.

Bullion cubes are straight sodium blocks. Don't give your dog salty things unless you *like* trying to pick up dog squirts.

You should have your dog on a lead when you are at a campsite at all times if there are other people there. If your dog is as well trained as you think then it won’t make any difference to you or the dog. Unfortunately most people who do this don’t have their dog under perfect control and it makes others around them have to be on extra alert and feel uncomfortable
