Last but certainly not least. A perfect backcountry book end to complete my last year of living in the "Land of Enchantment". This may be my last adventure in New Mexico, but this will be the first official backpacking trip of the year. My buddy Matt and I were hoping to make the third time the charm and really go big with this one. With limited information and skeptical articles from yesteryear we decided to take the risk and chase the biggest brown trout in the Gila. Guarded by an absolutely hellish hike in, these fish are not seeing many flies throughout the year. Full of unknowns but prepared to the teeth, we set out and found a backcountry adventurers oasis. Big trout, a perfect camp, and endless mystery and exploration with each bend in the canyon.

There's definitely something very special about the Gila. It's become one of my favorite destinations simply because of the ruggedness, the hard to get to trout, the sore legs and sense of accomplishment. The wild and native trout might be small but the gems of the desert are hard to beat! Some people call my wild Gila Trout pics bait but I could chase em in those skinny streams a million times and it won't get old. Ps... Apache Trout Rule too!

I could not agree more! There is so much to see and do! It would take a lifetime (or two) to explore every inch of trout water in those mountains.

I wish I would have seen this video sooner, before went to Colorado fishing for Brooke trout. You showed your friend, how do slingshot in the water, then you told him let it sink and then do twitching and he caught trout! Good advice 👍 few places I couldn't cast my line, this would have helped me out.

Serious question 🤔 why don't you ever keep your limit and enjoy some camp fire trout. Keeping fish does not damage the population of any fishery however helps it!! And they are so tasty!!! I love your videos!! And gives me inspiration and motivation ✨️
@FLYALLSZN
@FLYALLSZN 2 жыл бұрын
It’s not a matter of keeping fish. You have to look at the adventure itself. We were trying to pack light into an unknown fishing location. Can’t ever bank on catching fish. Plus we might have not had many to eat with how picky some of those fish were!

Sorry to hear that you're leaving New Mexico - I've enjoyed your western videos. I have a Gila question; I was planning on trying to head out west sometime in the late summer - not sure because of the gas prices, etc. Anyway, I'm wondering if late summer might be a bad time to target these fish, given their location. Would it be better to wait until Fall? I would have to wait until after 8 October - my oldest daughter is getting married that day.
@FLYALLSZN
@FLYALLSZN 2 жыл бұрын
There will be many and more Western videos! This summer will be big land and big water. As far as the Gila goes, it would depend on what you are looking to do. Backpacking vs Day Packing. October means cooler days and less potential for fires. BUT days are shorter so that could be tough.. Hit me up on the discord and we can flush this out a bit more!
@chapmanodom
@chapmanodom 2 жыл бұрын
If you want to go late in the late summer, I would recommend going further north in the state. There is more consistent water the further north you go due to snow run off. The Gila is susceptible to getting dry in the late summer.

Love to see it man! Ain’t nothing better and small stream wild trout. I’m heading up north of gunnison in July and plan on doing a lot of small stream hike to places. I’ve always used a glass 5 wt 8ft 2 piece, and it’s just too heavy for that type of fishing. I’m looking for a relatively cheap 4 piece glass rod with a tube. I know you’ll probably recommend the leaf cutter, but do you think it’s the right rod for what I want to do?
@FLYALLSZN
@FLYALLSZN 2 жыл бұрын
Howdy! Leaf cutter is a 3pc so u don’t know if it’ll fit the bill. Is your heart set on glass? There are so many reliable and cost efficient rods on the market these days, they may just not be glass.

Gila rainbow crosses though for sure. That's why they have to shock and poison areas. I think he meant brown trout from the Gila. These are little browns for the area. There are equal streams of gila trout close by.
