Staring down the barrel of the Gunnison.. There's only one way the water flows folks..
Extreme is the only way to describe the conditions this world renowned river has to offer. Between the fly fishing and the hiking you are tested well beyond your limits at every bend. But that is exactly what creates an unforgettable memory that you can carry with you for a lifetime.
From its headwaters high up in the Rocky Mountains to where it dumps into the Colorado River, this famous river has earned its reputation. The Gunnison River offers up some of the best fly fishing in the entire Western United States. This video is proof enough.
This is a massive watershed that takes on different characteristics the further it flows. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is where we were today. This section is what makes a river like this so appealing to the most extreme of fly anglers. The National Park allows for access to both the North and South rim of the Black Canyon. "Access" is used as loosely as the crumbling routes used to get down to the Gunnison. It is not easy to get in and its even harder to get out. But if you are willing and able you can be rewarded with some of the biggest fish of your life.

I've fished this section on 8 separate occasions, my favorite place in the world honestly. Black pats have always KILLED down there, especially when you lob them into some of the big deep swirling pools. Those biiig lunkers cant resist the big black bug. Haven't been down there in 5 years (wife, kids, life), this took me back. Great vid!

I knew the salmon fly hatch is really hot down there in the early parts of the summer.. So I figured they nymphs aren't going anywhere and the fish must munch em! I am so glad you enjoyed the video! It is amazing how certain sounds and sights can reignite those memories made so long ago. I hope you make it back soon!

@@FLYALLSZN If you make it back down there, make sure you go further down and further up. You'll get cliffed out on the left as you walk down from where the trail spits you out, but there are a few really good, deep runs where I've caught some tanks. Same goes for further up. You were close where you landed that last big bow, but if you go another couple hundred yards you'll come to a big left turn in the river where theres a deeep plunge pool and drop off along a cliff edge. If you want more info, shoot me a DM

I’ll be going to CO soon, and have wanted to target Kokanee since learning about them. I’ll be going when the run is just getting started. The gunnison seemed to be the place to go, however it is about 4-5hrs from where I’ll be. I may be just trying one of the tributaries off another reservoir closer by. Looks incredible though. Such beautiful country side to be seen in CO.

Tremendous trout in a very special river. The Gunnison gorge is a very difficult place to wade fish. You made it look easy scrambling around all those rocks and boulders. The best way to fish the Gunni is to float fish. We can recommend Rigs fly shop out of Ridgeway. They offer a tremendous three day float trip. A trip of a lifetime type excursion Well done. @Mike40867

@@FLYALLSZN DIY is possible, but.... The Gunni Gorge is a very technical river to float. It has the steepest gradient drop of any river in Colorado. There are a dozen class 3 rapids and 3 very dangerous 4+ runs which require precise entries and challenging moves to reach exit points. If you miss the entries you are fucked with a pinned boat and likely flipping. You can scout these but still dangerous. I highly recommending doing a guided trip first to see how the guides navigate the technical rapids. We did a DIY float after doing a guided trip and was fine. Still nearly flipped going through the "Squeeze" after missing one critical oar stroke. Very technical for sure. Keep the videos coming! Mike

Oddly enough it got me to switch for swinging soft hackles on my scandi line to switching to my 4wt with a Skagit and a bushy streamer that got me my only fish of the day. 16" brown crushed it literally the second it splashed down on the opposite bank after a 60' cack handed double spey.

If you float the Gunnison Gorge section for three days, a hundred to two hundred fish per person is common in a day, mostly browns from 12" to 24" but a sprinkling of rainbows that run 16" to 12 pounds usually. Doesn't really matter if you prefer lures or flies. You'll lose count of the 16" to 22" fish you get.

Fantastic...Wish I would have known about the BC of the Gunnison when I was your age! Don't think I could hike it now. Maybe a float in my future.

Mike - what a great adventure- and video! Btw - I visited my grandson in Iowa last weekend. He caught his first Driftless rainbow on a fly rod at 8 years old. We couldn’t have done it without your guidance- keep up with the great work!

When we lived in CO we fished the Gunnison quite a bit from the 70s to mid 90s hiked several routes down and most of the time camped on the river . No doubt its a MF getting in and out no matter which route you take , most of the time we would never see another person . Living in Montana now I’ve learned to bring a spare reel for my 6wt single handed rod with a Skagit setup for swinging works unbelievably good and I’m sure would work great there . Thanks for the video. Happy trails

Upstream of the Blue Mesa reservoir the Gunnison river offers some of the best fly fishing I've ever experienced in my life. I lived there for almost 5 years and drifted flies on almost every inch of it. The Taylor and east river are great fisheries too.

Those were some awesome 'bows. I've found that the black and copper combination is pretty effective, no matter what sort of fly you're tying. Especially on rainbows and steelhead.

I grew up on Bostwick park where my dad farmed (dad was a fly fisherman as was my grandad) 4 miles from the Black Canyon entrance and I used to drop down the routes into the canyon 3-4 times a year. Always backpacking, up to a week at a time. Warner Point my favorite route with about 1.5 miles of access if you stay on South side. If you have courage you cross the river and you can get up to base of Painted Wall. The water is pristine, I really doubt many folks cross the river, it can be exciting. Fishing is always better on other side of the river….😁. I never saw another human down there..perfect! I caught some real monsters. And the memories and stories, death defying life changing experiences. Last trip to bottom was 1984. I have been talking about doing it again with fishing buddy. Now I am a retired geophysical engineer in Durango and playing on the Juan, Florida, Piedra, and of course Weimenuche Wilderness playground. I can tell you Mike, you have only touched the tip of the iceberg!! I NEVER take two poles on a pack trip!! Ute Lake episode (been there!) Mike you remind me of me 40 years ago!! I still at 65 like to go where no one else is. And wet wade and catch lots of fish. Keep it up, great vicariously fishing with you!!
