This is a shot-for-shot re-edit of my June 2019 Gila Wilderness trip video released almost a year before. I wasn't happy with the original edit and didn't really know what I was doing at the time... Since I'm sitting here with a bum knee during a pandemic I thought it would be fun to re-do this using more experienced editing skills. In this "enhanced edition" you get the following:
* Sharper image quality
* Less compression artifacts
* Tighter editing
* Better sound
* Better color grading
* MUCH better image stabilization
* Less of my dumb face talking on camera! :)
* Some deleted scenes added back in
* More detailed map shots of each day's route
* Music! (Not a trend, just an experiment)
I'll be making new backpacking content as soon as I can start hiking again. I've been working hard at rehabbing this knee.

The Zig Zag trail down into the West Fork...as some of us old timers call it.

Absolutely. Very cool view going down that way. I wanted to spend more time out there on that trip, but some stuff came up - so I wasn't even expecting to take that route down and had no idea what it would be like.

@@WildlandExplorer Yes, (before my time :) ) the Zig Zag was used back in the late 1800's and early 1900's to move livestock between the two river forks...

Great new edit. This really looks like a trip I want to take. Simply a walk through the forest, through canyon country, mountain meadows, and plenty of water; what more can you ask for? Keep those videos coming.

Really nice video and music to go along with it. I did this hike several years ago ( much higher water than you experienced) and was mesmerized by the natural beauty . Truly a very special place. Thanks for sharing.

Hey enjoyed watching the trip! I have hiked those places since i was 15! I worked for the Forest Service in Silver City and did the updated mapping of the day hikes around the Hit Springs and Cliff Dwellings. The video was great! Made me wish i was there again!

Of course, it's actually fun making them! I'm really close to being able to backpack again and I've committed to recording most of my trips in the future. Hope you are still getting out there regularly as well!

@@WildlandExplorer completing the eastern cabin loop was my last trip out, unfortunately. I started a new job here in Scottsdale at PXG (building golf clubs) and work nights now. More than likely I'll get up north for a couple nights again soon. Your videos are literally the biggest reason I started backpacking here! You showed me a ton of local areas, and I used them pretty much as my research on where to go, and how to backpack. Seriously, thank you. I'm in love with this hobby, and owe it to you for showing me the absolute beauty Arizona has to offer. I've lived here since 2015, and hated it until I strapped on a pack, and wandered around the wilderness. This is the hobby I needed to find 20 years ago, so, thank you for helping me find something I truly love. Hopefully someday we'll bump into each other again on trail!

Thanks for this Enhanced Version! I live in Mimbres, NM, and have hiked up the Middle Fork of the Gila many times, and the West Fork too, but never made the loop like you did. In colder weather wet feet can be a problem. I know you use lowcut boots for the millions of stream crossings; do they give you enough ankle support? I usually use non-Goretex Backpacking (getting hard to find) boots (so the water can drain out of the boots) with waterproof, submersible (water cannot get in the sock even when knee deep) but they are expensive very hard to find, and don't hold up very long. I dislike getting up in the morning to cold, wet socks (I am 76) and used to carry 2 pairs of boots and numerous socks, but that gets old too! The Mimbres River Trail is very nice too, but they re-routed it many years ago to avoid a private inholding, and you have to hike 3 miles or so before you get to the river. You take the CD Trail for part of the way. I have enjoyed all of your videos! Hope your knee has healed!

I am jealous of where you live. To this day my hikes in the Gila are some of the best. I want to go back soon. What I've found in terms of footwear is firstly (the obvious part) - everyone is different. Some people just can't get by on low cut shoes. They just have weak ankles that roll easily. I don't really know why but I used to have a lot of problems with this, and over the years I roll my ankles less and less. I think it's a combination of being more mindful of how I walk and also adopting a more lightweight kit. I have read a lot of accounts of how strength training will help ankle support. Specifically dead lifts. But I am lazy at home and don't do much of that. One of the benefits of filming yourself - you see how you walk. And I notice my gait or stance has become wider with time. Maybe that is part of it too. The trail runners I currently wear are Topo Athletic Trailventures and of course they are non-waterproof on purpose. I think I am now going into my 5th pair of them - that's how good they hike to me. They are some of the fastest drying shoes I've tried as well. With river hikes I bring an extra pair of Darn Tough 1/4 hiking socks so I always have a dry pair ready to go. Thanks for the comment and watching!

Awesome video. What Osprey model and size pack did you use for this trip? I notice you use it a lot on Weminuche and Canyonlands trip? Is a 4lb 2 person tent too heavy? I am 5'7" and 145 lbs.
@WildlandExplorer
@WildlandExplorer 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stephanie! The one I use for long trips is an Exos 58L. I can't really comment too much on the weight of tents other than 4lbs for a 2p tent is about average - you can do a lot worse than that. Thanks for watching!
