Lake Katherine may just be the most beautiful lake in all of New Mexico. Situated high in the Pecos Wilderness at 11,742 feet above sea level Lake Katherine is a stunning Alpine Lake. On this backpacking trip I spent two nights in the Pecos, one at Stewart Lake (10,232 Feet) and one at Lake Katherine (11,742). As far I as I know I was alone and had the whole lake to myself. I started at the Cowles Trailhead (TH 13) and took the 271 Winsor Trail to Stewart Lake. I spent the night on the North Side of Stewart lake then took trail 251 Skyline Trail up to Lake Katherine. If I had more time I would have tried to summit Santa Fe Baldy (12,622 feet). See my blog at the link below for a previous summit of Santa Fe Baldy: mylifeoutdoors...

This was a perfect video to capture the beauty of the Pecos Wilderness. I like both styles, your commentary is really good as well. Some KZfaqrs like to do no talking videos to increase their international audience.

Music and no talking made it serene - a perfect break in the work day. More of the same please! Also gave me some inspiration - I live just over the hill from those hikes and haven't been up there. Beautiful!

I loved your video as it brought back so many memories from my youth. As an 18 year old in 1966 I worked for the US Forest Service and I with another young man and our supervisor worked on maintaining the trail to Lake Katherine. We started from a lower trail that intersected with the Windsor Trail and continued over the saddle below Santa Fe Baldy to Lake Katherine. It was an eye opening experience for a young man from Arkansas that had come to Santa Fe to live with his father and go to college. I saw sights that will live in my mind till the day I die. I hiked to the top of Santa Fe Baldy after we finished working one day , meeting mister marmot along the way and then looked down at the beautiful surface of Lake Katherine. We stayed in tents for 10 days at a time and came back to town for 4 before going back for 10 more. Between our first ten and when we went back a bear ravaged our tents and whatever else we had left for our return. I can’t remember the name of that trail. Thanks again for your video. I enjoyed it immensely

Looked like first night at Stewart Lake and second night at Katherine. That’s a nice route. I did the same Winsor Ridge trail to Stewart last October when the aspens were blazing, spectacular

When my husband and I got married over 30 years ago, we didn't have much money and for our honeymoon we hiked to Lake Katherine. My husband had grown up in Santa Fe and remembered it from treking there as a kid. It was in mid-September, with fall colors just coming on. It was quite a bit greener back then, with more vegetation and grasses around the lake, and the wilderness trail no so clearly maintained. We had driven down from Denver and got a later start, so by the time we reached the lake it was getting dark. We were totally alone, exhausted and did little more than set up on a grassy area close to the lake and fell asleep to the sounds of a small, spring creek nearby. It rained a little overnight and just before sunrise we woke to the sight of a mist was rising from the lake and deer drinking at the edge. It was ethereal and unforgettable. Thanks for the lovely walk back in time.

Great cinematography! You really captured the beauty of nature in this video! Is the Melanzana really worth the hype? I need to see a break down of the pros and cons of this sought after mid layer. As per your question, I don't mind the odd nature video but normally I prefer more of the conversational style. That being said, all the questions I had for this trip were answered either on screen or in your description. Great video!!!

Thanks! I love my Melanzana. If you are ever in Leadville you should buy one. But I don’t know that it’s worth going out of your way just to get one. It’s just a mid-layer. Nothing fancy other than the company’s business model. I love it because of my love for Leadville. I have a special connection to that town. Thanks for the feedback on the video.

Great video man! Looks like you had a great trip! I liked the peaceful tone throughout. I think it really works for some trips and it fit well for this one. You did great with the sound...how much sound design did you use? The sounds were great!

Thanks! The mic I typically use crapped out on me last week. (The only reason I didn't release a video last week) I bought a new mic days before this trip (Rode shotgun with a dead cat windscreen) and used it for all the sound capture. All the sounds you hear are the real sounds except a little bit of lake sounds at the beginning of this video. I am really impressed with this mic.

This was great! I know that my "this was our adventure" types of videos don't "do as well" as the kind of stuff that shows up in search engines (e.g. gear reviews), but I have found the former to be much more rewarding and meaningful to make. My favorite video I ever made (Halcyon Days: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qsV3gpmUptXPZYk.html) was just about a simple camping trip with my boys. I think these types of short films let us get to know you a bit better, and I like that kind of connecting. I know you'll have to balance views and subscribers and all of that, but please keep throwing some of these in... for all of us and for yourself. 😍👍
