It really is true folks you can make your wood post last longer. We use all organic used motor oil as a oil stain. It sheds water like you can’t believe and adds a lot of life to that old wood post. Not to mention it makes all of your post match you can make railroad ties telephone poles Cedar post green treated post and any other kind of post pretty much match by painting or soaking your post in used motor oil. It’s free and it works excellent. If you’ve got the time, give it a try.

I soake 10 ponderosa pine posts in a 55 gallon drum for 2 weeks. Probably up about 2 feet on the posts this was about 12 years now and they still seem to be good. It is dry clay country but if you don’t treat them like this they fall apart after 2 years

Top tip - Go buy a pack of 20 kitchen sponges, dunk them in oil and put one on top of each post. The oil will slowly soak into the top of the post for an hour. You will get a lot more oil into the top of the post than just painting it on. Then move on to your next posts.

I just subbed. This is so helpful. I’m a woman. Im only 25. I have a horse farm that I have to maintain completely on my own. So far I have 4 pastures, 11 stalls, 1 barn, 1 riding arena. I did all this with my own two hands besides my arena dirt work and construction of the shell of my little barn. It’s so hard to find info on how to do this, especially alone and on a budget. So thank you.

i live in lower Michigan in a neighborhood, had to put up 300' of privacy fencing everyone around me had Pit bull dogs. I bought 30 4x4x10 "treated/green" post and spent two months drying them out in my driveway, every few days I would rotate them (make sure to place them off the ground so air can circulate). Once they were good/dry I used half and half used motor oil & diesel fuel; wish I had a way to soak them but had to settle with just paint brush and rotate coating for two weeks. At the end of the process, I stuck the "ends" in a five-gallon bucket of 50/50 oil. Because of the wet/cold nature of the soil here holes were dug 45" deep and 1 big shovel of gravel for drainage (dam clay).

Recycling is the correct word. Recycle oil, it’s organic, recycle the tree, it’s organic, and if a greenie wants to moan you can recycle one of those bits of lead, from the earth, that are attached to brass casings and persuade them to kindly take their hollow communist bones and piss off back from where they came from! Like the video. Looks lovely over there. 🇬🇧👍🇺🇸

People complaint about the used motor oil, need to complain about asphalt roads, first. Asphalt is made from the crap leftover, after refining fuel, such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, etc. it’s a way to get rid of it, without having super toxic sites.

I used the same method when doing split rail fences on my place. Since the wood was untreated I also charred a bit on bonfire to stop bug infestation, then paint with old motor oil. New fence post are pressure treated no need to char it.

The issue of used motor oil vs. new motor oil is: 1. Used will give you a darker finish, and 2. Used my clog your spray nozzel. It's important to note that this spray will go everywhere, so be prepared to kill some nearby plants, stain nearby structures and make a mess. Personally, I roll my fence with used motor oil. Get the thickest nap roller you can find and a mini roller. Cut the roller cover down with a hacksaw and place it on the mini roller. I mixed one five quart bottle of used motor oil and five gallons of kerosene in a five gallon bucket. Put the roller pan in a carboard box to reduce drips on your lawn and garden. It also keeps you from stepping in it and filling your sneaker with kero and motor oil like I did. Roll the fence, then come back with a brush and finish the tight spots. Yes, spraying is a quicker application but a much longer clean up. It's also a lot more messy and you don't get the ability to really load down the roller and soak the top and base of each post where you really need a lot of oil. Another advantage of rolling is you can call it quits and just cover your gear without any clean up. This is important for big jobs.

I use diesel and motor oil mixed 50/50 for my posts, seems to penetrate a bit better for me than straight motor oil. Do you ever do that thing where you drill a hole into your post just above ground level at a downward angle and fill it with oil or diesel and oil mix and then plug it with a wood plug and then come back and fill it back up again every few years? I haven't done that myself but I have read some old timers used to swear it made their posts last much much longer. So far I have only heard of folks out east doing this and I always wondered if their fence lines weren't as long as ours out west and so this was doable for them because it wouldn't take a week of work or longer to refill every post like it might on bigger places out west.

I soak two weeks, let sit two weeks, then wrap 30lb roofing felt around the buried base. Re-apply every 3 years. I also use Henry’s asphalt emulsion, roll it on entire post, let dry for two weeks, then use a 4” paint roller entire post with motor oil, let dry two weeks then install. PNW rains are hard on posts.

Just paint the tops with oil/preservative! We had creosote treated posts, years ago, and they were the worst post ever, as once moisture got in, it stayed and rotted the post.

I do often soak the post in in oil and a little bit of diesel fuel. In this case I didn’t, but you’re right, it would be better to do so. Usually I will let them sit in the oil for a minimum of two weeks. Preferably a couple of months it really turns it into quite a post

You can char the post that goes in the ground. That's what they did in colonial times. I have a young adult son who will inherit my 16 acre farm.who would like to date a moral woman. Corgi are great, but I'm looking for a standard dachshund. Sorry.

@Baptist Joshua so is wood! Traditional treated lumber is soaked in Copper Naphthenate and it's flash point is around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Motor oil flash point is much higher around 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Homes use treated lumber without any issues of fire. So I'd imagine using motor oil that is far less flammable than Copper Naphthenate should be safe around a home.
@BaptistJoshua
@BaptistJoshua Жыл бұрын
@@number1pappy 100⁰ flashpoint?! No. On a hot summer day it gets over 100⁰. Weathered wood is probably less likely to combust than oil treated, I would think. If it does start, I believe oil treated would burn hotter and faster.
@number1pappy
@number1pappy Жыл бұрын
@Baptist Joshua ok, well, you can sit there and worry yourself about all these oil soaked post spontaneously combusting to your hearts desire. Where I live out in the country, we still have old barns that have timbers soaked in used motor oil. It is a cheap way of treating wood that prevents insect damage and water rot. The used oil soaks into the wood and prevents it from drying out. I personally would be worried about untreated wood that is bone dry catching on fire. I sorta get what you're thinking, though. Oil burns, so oil soaked wood should burn even better ,right? Well sorta but not quite...I think we've all heard the story about the mechanic who through a lit cigarette into a 55 gallon drum of gasoline on a really cold day and it didn't catch on fire . It didn't start on fire because it's the vapors of gas that burn, and the cold temperature kept it in a liquid form only. The thing is, there just isn't fence post catching on fire like you'd think. Neither are barns that have oil soaked beams just spontaneously erupting in fire all over the place. If you ever get bored enough, go out and find an oil soaked fence post and try lighting it on fire. Lol! I "think" just like you do ,you'll find it's not as easy as you "think" it is....
