My dad was born a year before the Great Depression started. He was the 7th child of 11. He was raised on whatever they could catch, trap, shoot, etc. He and his brothers and sisters would always talk about how there were times they ate racoon, possum, squirrel, armadillo, prairie dogs and snake. You name it they just about ate it. When I was a kid in the early 70's he would take me hunting with him and he'd actually catch or shoot 1 of those and cook it on an open campfire for me to eat. When I asked him why, he told me that 1 of these days you may be homeless, another Great Depression could hit or whatever and I want you to know that you can eat the critters that most people wouldn't. And the way things are going in this world today may be a closer than we think. My favorite of all those was squirrel stew which was also my grandmother's favorite. We'd have it twice a month during the winters if daddy could shoot enough of them.

My Dad was born in 1922 and was the 3rd of 9 kids. They were farmers and very poor. His mother had a big vegetable garden and he used to say that they would have starved if it hadn't been for her garden and whatever they could find to hunt in the woods. He just passed away at 99 years old so I guess it didn't hurt him any. 😁

@@christydeannl3105 Oh yes, grandmother had a big garden too, she told me it was a little over 2 acres and it took all that to get them through the winter plus what grandpa brought home for the winter. He was an actual cowboy and the ranch he worked for in the 20's would give each family a half a cow for Christmas. Then the boys, there were 7 of them would hunt for whatever they could find. My grampa died before I ever got to meet him. My daddy passed away at the age of 74 back in 2002 from colon cancer. He's been gone 20 years now and I still miss him.

We need to learn from our ancestors and keep that knowledge alive. My family all passed away before I got to learn much from them, but Google is filling in the gaps. Like, I never knew that what I knew as "flour gravy" for biscuits is called a "roux".

My dad was stationed in Kitzingen, Germany in the mid 70s and he and my mom decided to live off the base to save money and experience the culture. They stayed with a family and their apartment shared a wall with the family stable my mom was missing home and for the 4 th of July made corn on the cob and hamburgers and American potato salad. Their landlady was appalled at the corn and cold potato salad! She suggested that the salad needed heated and that they should feed the corn to Mösel her horse!

During WWII in Britain the war department actually encouraged families to keep rabbits and chickens not as pets but as easy to feed rapidly growing food supply. And state side my mom remembered eating river fish and crawfish (we live in the heart of Columbus, Ohio but there’s many rivers here and parks so it’s definitely possible to go fishing and creeking even in the city)that to this day she refuses to eat fish! I don’t see much difference between that and eating raccoons if you were hungry and it’s available.

For your house ….here’s an idea if you haven’t already thought of it. Instead of wedding presents when y’all get married have your friends and family’s gifts go towards the house. If they can give a couple hours here and there paint walls, sweep floors, help with flooring, help with the window hanging, small jobs, big jobs - what ever they can help with. That way you have more hands to help AND best part is your friends hands and heart have help build your home. Thats a gift that keeps on giving. Like a barn raising. If we were closer, we live in TN, we’d be right over to help. ❤️❤️

My husband hit a big buck one night, the hit killed our car but not the buck so the police came and it took 4 or 5 shots to kill it, it was wounded too badly to let live. The good part was that the police called the zoo to come get the meat for the animals at the zoo. I never knew they did that, I’m glad the meat from things like this doesn’t go to waste. Thank you for another interesting chew and chat. I do admit I wasn’t too sure about raccoon in the first place but it really was interesting and I learned something new today. 😁

Omigosh, you two remind me of the time I was first married (1989) and we lived In British Columbia Canada. I was a city girl from Chicago, IL. My husband's coworker had us over for supper and made the most delicious beef roast I had ever eaten. Not overly done and so moist and tender. I asked her how she cooked it and, at that point, everyone started to giggle. I slowly looked up and said, "What" in a very suspicious manner. Then my husband said that it was moose. Well, I was not going to give them the satisfaction of acting shocked and said, " Well, it is delicious. Can I have another slice?" So, racoon? I just might try it, lol. Watching you two reminds me of my husband and I. May you always have the loving playfulness in your marriage.

The Spanish originally brought the tomato plant back to Europe to use as an ornamental plant, like a rose bush. They often ate off of pewter plates which, when mixed with the nightshade plant, produced deadly toxins. Eeek. Over time, with bad memories I guess, they would just eat the fruit and not the leaves and stems and the rest is history.

I don’t know if it was the offending critter or not. We were asked by everyone if we ate it…we did not but my husband thought it was ironic that this episode aired today. I am not completely opposed to trying it but I am actually not a fan of beef. Maybe we will feed it to our chickens. 🐓

It’s a blessing to find such an awesome channel. I love watching it. Not only do I learn from it, but I love watching all the “olden” stuff. Early American and the earlier stuff are my kind of times ❤️. You both must be incredibly busy with busy schedules, but thank you for creating this content. P.S I sent a Christmas/New Year’s card yesterday ☺️. Blessings to both of you and May God bless you on your journey together when you become Mr. and Mrs. on your wedding day 🙏🏻.

My dad was a depression kid. There was hardly any meat on my grandma's table, unless dad went out hunting. He learned to hunt and dress small game at an early age, and brought home squirrels when he was 9 or 10. He was such a good shot, he was assigned to be a sniper in World War II and was awarded either the "sharpshooter" or "expert" badge. (I only saw his medals and badges once when I was about four.) About tomatoes, my mom said that long ago, people called them "love apples". I'm guessing it's because some heartsick spurned lover tried to kill himself by eating one! I know you'll be super busy getting the house finished and preparing for marriage, so I'm hoping and praying that 2024 will be a wonderful year for you!

My grandmother had a cook book passed down through a family. It had in the cook book how to Cook raccoon and possum and bever and muskrat and things most folks wouldn't think about We are going to keep the book in the family. Just because our grandparents would say that's how we got through the depression and moving from here to there in the 18 hundreds is something to cherish. Love your program thank you for quality entertainment.

Tomatoes weren't thought toxic because of lead, but because they are a member of the genus nightshades. Nightshade does have several species that bear deadly fruit...little blue/black fruit that look like huckleberries is a very common weed that is poisonous. Potatoes, also nightshades, bear seeds that are also deadly while the tubers are wonderful.

Unless they are left on the surface of the ground, which make the taters turn green-and that’s the poison in a small amount. One every now and then is ok, but cumulatively not good for ya!

@@justkiddin84 indeed. Which is why it's important to make sure to fully cover with soil or mulch any popping up from the ground.

Never had racoon before but it looks delicious 😋 I've had gator tail, squirrel, frog legs, armadillo. It's all in the preparation. Some wild meats you can fool people with because it tastes like beef or chicken. Happy New Year Ron and Justine 🎉 looking forward to another year of videos. Luv Ya ❤
