Hey everyone! A while ago I showed you how to build a 40 pound no heat bow. I didn't do any follow up videos on that bow, so today I'm going to building a similar bow. This one pulls 70 pounds at 28 inches and is a hard-hitting longbow.
We're going to be building and finishing this bow. I'll show you guys how to use pipe insulation and a wire clamp to create a comfortable handle with arrow shelf. The handle also helps cut down on some of the hand shock.
The fiberglass core of this bow can be used in different lengths of pipe to get different draw weights or reach different draw lengths. You can see a chart at 3:00 .Keep in mind that some lengths are not practical. When made too long, this bow tends to gets more hand shock and loses performance. When made too short, the bow stacks near the end of the draw and doesn't perform its best.
Next time we'll build a set of arrows to go with this bow. The arrows will be made with craft/hardware store items and don't require any archery specific supplies.
Thanks for watching and enjoy!

Found the video yesterday, made one today. Had to substitute the fiberglass with 6 foot bamboo rods. Turns out it works just as well, got a 72" bow with ~60lbs at 30" draw. 10/10 would recommend.

For anyone interested, the weight listed here will kill a grizzly bear with proper tips. The bow looks like it would require a lot of practice to use accurately, though. For all of you saying the string is too close to the bow, you need a shorter string. For anyone saying they can't pull the bow, make a lower weight bow than this. Bows are powered by your muscles, and a 70 pound bow is hard to draw. Nick, your ideas are brilliant and simple, I really like your work. Just sayin, the way you string and pull this bow shows you're a hell of a strong guy. You make it look easy.

To be entirely fair before someone jumps to conclusions we don't know the actual efficiency of this bow. Draw weight in bows with nontraditional materials won't necessarily reflect arrow speed or "power" transfer to the same degree that the same draw weight would assume to be with a manufactured bow. A chronometer reading for self bows is a lot more meaningful measurement than just draw weight. None of that is to say anything against the bow he made here. It seems to have a pretty good "zip" to its arrows and I'm likely to make a low powered one like this for my girlfriend who is just now getting in to archery so she can have a bow to dry fire and practice basic form when not at the range without damaging an actual bow.
@rich4958
@rich4958 6 жыл бұрын
You should always have an arrow knocked or "missile" knocked before releasing the string from draw on any bow, crossbow, etc. Even a PVC bow should have "something" in it as the energy to send the "missile" takes stress from the frame and string, the vibration can cause the core to splinter or snap. Whack a tuning fork and time the end of the vibration cycle, a bow does the same thing internally and this causes wear and can break ANY bow. However plain PVC bows with out any core may be a better application for dry fire practice but again they will break if dry fired quite often.

@@houselightkell what are u talking about? The way the English longbowmen or eastern tribes drew their 100+ pound bows was leaning forward and using your shoulders and back. What makes u think u cant aim? If u cant hold onto the string long enough to look at the target you're shooting a bow to heavy for u

Nicely done production and bow! I especially like the focus on making it with inexpensive materials for those of us who are "cash strapped" which includes me as a retired fella who has bow hunted most of his adult life. I used to shoot a 45lb Ben Person recurve but eventaully sold that one and bought a Jennings Model T shooting at 55lb. That bow I had until about 3 years ago when it was stolen along with other items totaling over $8,000. This was a lifetime collection of tools and other stuff which was never recovered and I cannot afford to replace. I will follow your lead and build my own fiberglass reinforced PVC bow however I will need to make it no more than about 50lb because at 72 years I no longer can consistently pull/shoot heavier bows. I might even try your crossbow ideas when a regular bow is too much for me. Thanks again for your many bow videos.

Hello Nick! Today I built a bow, using your tutorials. I used gray schedule 40 @ 1 inch diameter. Overall length is 64 inch. I made my core from old fiberglass tent poles. Four poles, sections taped, each pole length is 54 inch. I used lobster trap headbail string, doubled, for my bowstring. My raise, or string to bow measurement,at center, is about 8 inches. This thing is a friggen Beast!!! I'm gonna leave it strung for a couple days, then I'll check the pounds pull. It feels like maybe 90 pounds, possibly more. I can BARELY pull it to 24 inches,. This thing should be a BEAR killer! I'll keep you posted as to pull pounds, and functionality when I test it. Thanks dude, ☮️

I made this bow today exactly to your specifications. When I tried to string it... my god. You made it look very easy. I had jam one end into the ground against a tree root and lay the other end on a pile of cinder blocks and literally stand on this bow to string it... i'm not very meaty though... 145 lbs @ 5'11"... this bow is way too much for me. I'm making a smaller one with 3/4" pvc and less fiberglass rods.... My first arrow I ever shot though :) had no idea wtf I am doing... just aimed slightly up... pulled back as far as I could... let go... the arrow went about 70-80 yards from NOT a full draw at all.... that's a good feeling tbh.. lol

Hey Nick, You likely won't even see this comment because the video is several years old now and I am sure you have gone on to bigger or better projects. But, I wanted to say THANK YOU for taking the time to make these videos. I have taken your videos a couple times and taught young and even teenage Boy Scouts how to do this. I forget the exact dates but it's been 6 years or so I think and maybe even farther back than that, when I taught my last group of boys how to make, shoot and site in the pvc bow. I moved out of state where I was working with that particular set of boys/Troops but just last year one of the then youngest scouts sent me a message asking for the link to your channel or if I would teach the current group of boys how to make the bow. I sent him the link to your channel and as I type this, they have built about 2 dozen pvc bows and ALL have gone hunting with them. a few of them have harvested deer, one or two have taken feral hogs and one that I know of has won an archery contest where he went up against "real" long bows. To be fair, I think one of the biggest factors in his winning was that he was grossly underestimated which led to the opponents becoming over confidant which led to critical mistakes. I just wanted to share a brief comment or two, say thank you and that my two youngest boys in my personal family asked me just a couple weeks ago if I could teach them how to make "one of those funky pvc bows and arrow set ups."

This was the original bow I made 10 years ago. Went to a Renaissance fair and shot a bullseye to everyone's dismay. Never even made a grip on the thing. And as crazy as it is I used paracord as a string. Thousands of shots later it's still great and I'm still using the original paracord. Best way to make a beginner bow and a very practical bow.

Is there a particular one of your videos you would recommend watching that would help me visual how I need to heat/bend my handle section so I get more of a centered shot? Built the 40# non-heat bow and it works great, but the fully round pipe makes for a very off center shot, going to try and make a non-reinforced recurve this week. Thanks for the great videos by the way, very helpful all around.

hi nick, ty for the videos, they're awesome and you're great instructor. what's your take on building a bow with 2 pvc pipes, one short inside a larger and longer one (instead of fiberglass rods)? do they add too much mass to the bow to be worth? cuz I've tried some of your designs but couldn't get any of my bows to shot more than a thousand arrows without breaking till I made one with 2 tubes. I'm very newbie in this matter so I can't really assess the performance of my bow but it's seems ok. btw, I did it similar to your youth pvc bow, not like the no heat design. im looking for high durability and ok performance

I also find that if you want a more solid grip, you can take a peice of another slightly bigger pvc pipe (this bow is an inch , so you would need a piece that's 1 1/4 ,) cut off a 5-6inch long peice ( depending on the size of your hand) then put that piece under a heat wave gun (doesn't have to be a heat gun, just anything that will generate enough heat with out burning or melting the pipe will do ) which will make the pipe soft and malleable. then while the piece is still soft, squeeze it over the top of the bow and push to the center. then when it hardens it will tighten around the bow and stay in the center via friction. you can even make it more ergonomic by using a rodsaw to grind down the side of the grip to make it slightly concave. and of course wrap it in tape, I prefer hockey tape as it just looks and feels better in the hand.
@theThinkerator
@theThinkerator 6 жыл бұрын
I have also seen bows where they use only PVC, and step up diameter, centering the shorter pieces as they get fatter, (perhaps starting at 1/2" pipe at 6', then to 3/4' at 4.5', then 1" for 3', then 1-1/4" for the center 1-1/2' area) and use only the pipe... makes a usable bow, but I don't think they last as long as the ones stuffed with the rods. remember, heating makes it brittle, so only heat it once and only enough to get it to workable softness.

Greetings! Thanks a lot for this video. I followed all the steps, learned a few things for next time like use a file instead of a knife lol. The only thing that has been confounded is the draw weight. I pull a 70# compound regularly, but this thing is a different creature. I don't have a scale to measure, but with all the rods, I could barely get any pull on this bow. So I took 2 out. Still barely any pull. I took 2 more out... I could pull it, but boy was it hard! I took 1 more out... I'm thinking "Man, I know I'm not this weak... there's only 3 in here..." So it had only the 5' length with 2 rods, this was acceptable. But I actually took them out as well, just pvc, and it's the best. Shoots straight, fast and powerful... So what's the deal? All of those rods HAVE to be more than 70#. HAVE to be. Thanks so much for this... I'm hooked :D

James Cooper Shooting just off the foam handle would abrade it and change the arrow placement eventually. You don't need either the clamp or the foam for the handle. You make great videos sir..the 70#bow you made here is as much a bow as anything in a sporting good store IMO+- GONNA GO MAKE ONE LIKE IT. I HAVE A PVC BOW THAT GROUPS A FOOT TO THE LEFT OF AIM..SO I HEATED A SM AREA WHERE THE ARROW REST WOULD BE..AND PUSHED IN A REST (DEPRESSION ) THAT CENTERED THE ARROWS IN THE BOW AND THE STRING ETC DAMN THING ROTATED IN MY GRIP AND BENT IN HALF DUE TO THE SMALL DEPRESSION THAT NOTCHED+-THE BOW.. WTF A BUMMER😢
