Here's a little tutorial on building a basic bow for hunting small game and fish without bending or flattening pipe. It's not the fastest bow around, but considering what little work is required, it's a pretty valuable bow.
I've been getting a lot of requests for a bow that does not require heat bending or flattening but still has enough power to hunt. It is not ideal, but it will work if it's all you have.
This bow uses a 4.5 foot long piece of 3/4" pipe and a foot long dowel. It gets 40 pounds at 28 inches and about 30 pounds at 24. The bow can be made longer to make it lighter.
Thanks for watching!

A thousand thanks, Nick, for all your videos! You teach in such a good manner, in a calm, soothing voice, and you never use crude language--thank you! I made two of these bows and had tons of fun with them shooting on the left and right sides of the bow. One bow I shipped to my sister, cutting the PVC bow in half, just the pipe though, and not the dowel. And it worked great as a take-down bow.

The Honda knot is a good way to make strings from paracord. Easy to tie and easy to adjust for string height. I've made a couple of pvc bows by putting t-fittings on the end. Using this approach you could cut back the side pieces to make it a bit more elegant. No glue needed. Trail hitch on one end, honda on the other end of paracord string.

Really enjoyed the videos. I've been making a bow for my younger brother (and partly for myself too) and have picked up lots of useful tips. What to use for a string has been my biggest concern, but I decided upon some paracord. As my first attempt i'm sure i'll have some problems, but the only way is up :)

Your description is very solid, at this point I believe you may have indeed over applied uneven pressure when bending the bow to notch a too short string, the weakest spot in this bow is right off the wooden dowel. Crafting a bow is pretty much experience and feeling, if you think the string is too long now, I would recommend shorting the string loop progressively until you feel the overall bend is strong yet gentle, keep the angle wide since you will obviously need resistance to draw the arrow.

Yeah, dowel are rarely the size they say they are. I have a nice collection of 5/16" marked dowels for arrows that range from 9/32"-11/32". If the dowel is too large, you need to wrap or glue it. If it's too small, you need to sand the dowel.

Paracord works well for improv bows. If you want a thinner string, take out the innards of the paracord and either make a line out of them (twisted) or the outer sheathing (very strong, at least 100lbs of draw).

Hi thanks a lot for the tutorial! I was planning on modding this bow as a nerf longbow. I would basically use 12 inch dowels with densely packed cotton covered with duct tape as arrowheads. I would also attach another 20+ in. PVC pipe as a barrel to rest the short arrows.I'm wondering if this is safe, I would only use it for long range purposes Thanks again for the tutorial

The arrows (if you're making your own) should be just longer than your draw length. If you'r not sure how long that is, get a friend to measuer the distance between the string and the back of your bow hand at full draw. Leave about one or two inches in front of that :) Hope this helps

ALWAYS read the labels on paint cans, and bottles. It will save grief down the road. Jennifor truth wonders, "i dont see how spraypaint would weaken a bow like this." Most spraypaints, such as Krylon, are oil/alcohol based. Both of which can melt, or weaken and deform PVC, and plastics, if applied wrongly.
