The pipe finishes heating at 11:45, if you want to skip ahead.
This is just an introduction and demonstration of a simple hot box I came up with for heating PVC pipes for flattening. It uses easy to find materials and everything needed to build one can be found at most hardware / home improvement stores.
This is one of the best heat-sources for flattening PVC as it holds the pipe at a constant temperature unlike heat guns, torches, fires, and other indirect sources of heat that can cause pipe to melt and burn due to very high temperatures. Because it uses hot air, it is less messy and easier to handle than hot water, steam, and other constant sources of heat like hot sand.
This video was filmed in my garage, which was at 45 degrees F at the time. The oven gets to temperature in around 5-10 minutes, and will heat most PVC pipes in under 6 minutes when at temperature (around 250 to 300 degrees F).
Thanks for watching and enjoy! I'll have the build along up shortly!
As a side note, here are some temperatures and stages that PVC goes through. The benefit of using a hot box like this is that the pipe cannot exceed the temperature of the air in the box, greatly diminishing the chances of overheating the pipe.
PVC pipe begins to deform at around 170 degrees F. From here to about 250 degrees F, PVC pipe can be bent and shaped but not freely formed.
From about 250 to 300 degrees F, PVC pipe can be molded, formed, and shaped freely without losing its structure. So long as a PVC pipe is not heated above this range, it will return to its former round pipe shape when re-heated.
At about 350 degrees F, PVC pipe becomes viscous. It starts to melt and loses its structure. PVC pipe heated this far, once cooled, will not return to shape when re-heated and becomes very brittle. A bow would not longer be considered safe.
PVC pipe burns at about 500 degrees F and begins carbonization. PVC pipe turns yellow, then brown, then black. This should be avoided at all costs as the pipe is not only compromised, but it is at this point the plastic starts to break apart. PVC pipe will release dangerous fumes and gas at this point.
PVC pipe will combust at around 700 degrees F. The smoke released is very dangerous and can cause severe acute and chronic health problems. Never let PVC pipe get to this point and if this ever happens, evacuate the area.

Thought about doing something like this myself, but got distracted with other projects. Was thinking about a horizontal one, but yours is brilliant! Thanks for sharing, and I will build one for sure, so I can continue to give bows away. Just as you said, building bows for sale became filling orders, and losing out on fun time. I decided to keep sales to a minimum, and five them away. The smiles are worth more than money. Thanks for all you have done. Your friend Chouck.

Hey Nick, yet another great video. However I think I have improved on your flattening jig. I use the same jig plan that I learned from your videos but I just added a simple hinge on the back portion of the jig. This not only helps to line the boards up straight but eliminates the need for a second clamp as well. Just thought I would share since it was your videos that got me into pvc bow making in the first place.

Hey Nick,,, if you have two flattening jigs you can put those two boxes sideways and insert both sides of the pipe in both boxes. Then the pipe goes into two flattening jigs at once. I think it will be also easier to get a really aligned bow that way.
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 10 жыл бұрын
An even easier method would be to build the one box at about 6.5 feet long (using 2 drywall panels instead of 1) and with 6 bulbs and have it lay sideways. You could simply place the pipe with two flattening jigs on it with some weight on top. Once the pipe gets hot enough, it will flatten on its own in its own time. Making the flattening jigs from aluminum or steel plate would help conduct heat better and result in a better finish. You could even make a pre-tapered form with recurves, reflex, etc. The more time you invest in jigs, the less time it takes to make each bow. Though, I personally like the flexibility of working one limb at a time.

Putting a variable resistor in the circuit will give you fine control of the heat. With a little time and a candy thermometer you could find a setting which would heat the pipes to just the temper where they soften. I know that temp. is less than 212 °F. (100° C) since I've made a knife sheath by dropping a 8" long piece of 3/4" PVC pipe into a canning pot for a few minutes and then stepping on it to flatten it--worked really well.
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 10 жыл бұрын
You can form PVC once it reaches at least 170 °F. The problem is going from heat source to flattening jig. 250 °F is pretty much the perfect temp. So long as you don't exceed 300 °F, PVC will be fine. A friend of mine has a hot box with a thermostat built into it, that would be a good idea as well.
@charleschristopher9178
@charleschristopher9178 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the info. Now I'll know what temp. to adjust to when I give this a try. On the subject of keeping a bows limbs straight, which you mentioned in passing, have you tried cutting a shallow 90° Kerr down the middle of one board on your flattening jig to make sure the pipe stays in a straight line as you're flattening it? If so, what were the results? I'm thinking of doing this on the longer board to see if it aids or hinders the process or the finished bow.

I am so happy I found this video! This heat box could be adapted to a lower temperature and used as a heating chamber for killing bed bugs. Books, shoes, handbags or anything that cannot be heat treated in a laundry dryer need to be heated at a constant temperature of about 150 degrees F for about 40 minutes (although I might be wrong with these exact figures) in order to kill live bugs and their eggs. The commercially available bed bug killing chambers like the Packtite cost a few hundred dollars. Bed bugs are a nightmare and cause so much anxiety. Many people get them through no fault of their own. This is a very affordable, diy alternative and seems quite safe. Some people put things in their oven and heat up but if you need a big item to be treated like a dresser or a chair there is no limit to the size you could actually build this heat box. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Does hot air rise through the pipe to deform the previously flattened limb? Or does the box contain the heat real well?

This hasn't been a problem. While hot air does go up into the pipe, the pipes never seem to actually soften past where they exit the box, even if left for longer than 10+ minutes.

This just isn't happening for me with a Heat Gun. It's 1500 Watts and the high setting is 1100 Degrees. I heat the pipe until it's floppy and then keep going and it doesn't seem to get much floppier, so I assume it's hot enough. And then in the 10 seconds it takes me to move it to my jig, it's virtually rock hard again. If I try to heat it back up, while in the jig, only the sides heat up and it squishes unevenly. What am I missing or doing wrong? How long do you heat your pipe with a Heat Gun before it's ready? Like a 1" for instance, which is what I am trying. Thank for any input from anyone.

its PVC not u-pvc the Schedule (Sch.) 40 is in reference to the wall thickness of the PVC pipe. the larger the number the thicker the wall. Here's a link with those approximate dimensions for you. www.engineeringtoolbox.com/pvc-cpvc-pipes-dimensions-d_795.html The USA uses standard inches so you will have to translate them into millimeters if your on the metric system. Hope that helps.
