That's the way we built truck racks when I was younger. They didn't have pre made kits you could buy. Now I've got 2 close rakes from a store going out of business that works great.

Can't beet an Old Town best canoes made I have discovery 169 and love it it's been through hell and back and still floats me down the river. When I first got it a bunch of us went on a run and coming home we had 8 canoes stacked on a buddy's trailer and they came off nothing I could but watch my brand new Old Town sliding down the road today you can hardly tell.

Thanks for the great video. A super starting point for a two canoe project for my Tacoma. Doing practice trips for a Scout trip to Northern Tier and need to haul two canoes all over the place. The only real change is using eyebolts on the horizontal members and ropes (with scout knots!!) for the tie downs. I love your channel and keep up the awesome work. - Ian from MD.

Nice project, thanks for posting the video and detailed instructions. Looks like it will work well for the canoes, ladders, and anything you need to carry, but still be simple to take off your truck when you don't need the rack. A useful tool I use is the Irwin one-handed quick grip. For framing and carpentry to me it's a lifesaver, and I always have a few handy. This kind of clamp gives you an immediate 3rd hand. I use them all the time to clamp straight edges, braces, etc. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, places like Lowes and Home Depot will usually have a bundle of these on sale. That's always when I stock up on my drill bits and misc. hand tools from their "stocking stuffer" aisles.

pretty nice. i built one very similar a few years back that i take apart and stack against a wall in the garage when not in use. i use it to transport up to 4 kayaks and a canoe.

Be carefull if you do this rack in a RAM2500. Although the box interior measurements are roughly 74,25''L x 61''15/16 at the height of the edges of the box, there are two 1'' x 3'' (roughly) checks at the back on both sides when seen from the top. They are the housings for the rear lights that protrudes inside the box... It's also what you push the tailgate against when you close it. Your opening is 60''1/4 in fact. I decided to make the rack 60''1/4 wide so it is as long as the box and gets squeezed when I close the tail gate rather than 3 inches shorter to fit inside the checks and wider. I will compensate at the front by adding an equivalent piece of wood between the outside of the front vertical posts and the side of the bed if needed. But a low trans bar at the front and the tie downs to the low hooks should provide enough stability to avoid rocking from side to side up front.

Do you remember how much you had to have it stick up over the cab so the bow of the canoe would clear the top of the cab? Looks like maybe 5-6 inches.
