Oh, thank goodness for this lecture. My college is changing to an Open-source Education model, which I fully support, but the change from corporate-owned education materials with accompanying textbooks which mirror the lecture, to their own ppt slides and handouts-in-lieu-of-textbooks, means we are guinea pigs upon which my professors are finding their footing and I am frequently lost. I adore Hank Green but the pace, rapid-pace skip-cuts and lack of depth leave me confused and needing to roll back the vid several times or google to fill in blanks. This is robust, comprehensive and well-paced. Thank you for the help.

I'm about to start Med school; and being in a mathematics specialized class I had like no freaking idea of even the basics of biology ; so your videos are just saviiiiiiiiing me x) and I'm actually loving Bio !! ( wannet to be an astrophysicist all my life ; but we don't have those in my country , it just sucks )

Regarding the gram staining, I believe the reason the gram-negative bacteria do not stain so darkly is due to the thin peptidoglycan layer allowing leeching of the initial crystal violet dye when washed with alcohol (its outer membrane is also removed during this process), whereas the gram-positive bacteria retain this stain due to its thick peptidoglycan layer. The bacteria sample is then stained with a reddish dye that shows up in the gram-negative bacteria, but not in the gram-positive bacteria due to its crystal violet stain masking this lighter stain. Also, your images are a little confusing due to the peptidoglycan layers showing the wrong colours.

That Quorum Sensing is really interesting, and finally explains how pathogens "know" when to remain in a more dormant state inside a host and when to start going into overdrive replicating like crazy and actually inducing the disease-response of our bodies. Really want to learn more about that, and hopefully a way to use it to our advantage, maybe a signal that induces apoptosis for bacterial infections without having to worry about whether or not the strain is anti-biotic resistant or not.

Love your videos... just one thing about this one though - the distinction between the eukaryote nucleus and the bacterial nucleoid region could have been better made - lack of nucleus membrane etc.

can antibiotic action be described as "soaking into" the cell membrane? This term was used in a lecture in reference to time-dependant antibiotics taking a few days to work. So is "soaking in" something antibiotics do?

Great video, but I think algae and other protists are not considered part of the bacteria phylogeny, true? Cyanobacteria are definitely bacteria though. I guess my point is that I think its a historical misinterpretation to call cyanobacteria blue green "algae."

horizontal gene transfer= genes form one organism moved into the dna of another, its not linear gene transfer such as having sex and making a baby, a good example would be pili enabling them to share episomes (which are kinda like plasmids but instead it goes into the bacterial genome)
