So in this episode we’re starting to see all the various threads for the season come together. The batch’s friendship with Phee Genoa, the excellent crosshair storylines, Echo and Rex’s side quest, and even tech’s racing abilities get featured here [call it the tech maneuver].
The episode is called tipping point because this is the aux for the entire series. After this episode, crosshair is no longer against the bad batch, echo is trying to pull the batch into rex’s war for clone rights-and more importantly, they’ve decided to stay on Pabu.
Like I talked about last week, this is a trope in action drifter cinema.
Doug: What’s action drifter cinema?
It’s something I just made up. Basically, it’s an action movie that features a drifter protagonist. This protanigust comes fomr a world of violence, and any time they try to settle down, the violent world catches up to them and they have to leave, for the god of the new place they’ve helped to secure.
So I suspect that they won’t last long on Pabu, and their presence here will only bring danger to these people.
But let’s get into the easter eggs. The opening titles have been tweaked slightly to show characters fomr the animated shows. We have Chopper from Rebels, Crosshair, a droid commando, not sure what this one is let me know in the comments, a clone cadet helmet, a female Mandlorian , and finally a clone trooper.
So we start off on an imperial bae on balmorra. Now this is a planet that was prevalent in the old continuum first appearing in dark empire 2. That’s an interesting coincidence, because that comic is about Luke facing off against a clone of the emperor, post the return of the Jedi. Similar to what all the live action Disney shows are building toward now. Balmorra was also featured in the old republic games, so it's nice to see it finally appear in the canon continuity.
So ever since last season, we’ve been seeing the seeds of clone rebellion planets in the show. There was gregor’s resentment about being replaced by regs, and the clones flat out refused to obey the empire on ryloth [clip].
Dou: But why are the clones starting to rebel? I thought they were programmed to serve, without question [OTC clip].
Well , they were, but as we saw in the clone wars, the actual war led them down a path of inviolate, customizing their appearance and giving each other nicknames. Also, a lot of clones were like rex and the bad batch-they didn;t like serving the empire [I’m loyal to the republic].
The empire also destroyed tipoca city, which the clones considered to be their homeworld. And then, this season we’ve had some excellent episodes, showing the empire replacing clones and senators having to fight to give them a pension and a couple episodes ago, we saw that the military still regards them as units, not as people [obsolete tools]. And the politis arc pointed out that they have no representation in the senate [clip].
So now you have a few million military trained, disenfranchised war veterans without purpose or human rights. I’d say that’s a recipe for resentment and rebellion. And this perfectly mirrors the plight of so many combat vets when they get home. Like in 1932, there was a massive DC protest of former world war 1 vets called the bonus army-43,000 homeless vets and their families slept on the capitol lawn. The depression put them out of work and they protested to get their benefits early-and the president ordered the army to use tanks to clear them out, killing two vets.
And all the way up through modern day, when vets still struggle to get their benefits and adequate psychological care. Or even how congres dragged their feet to give funding for 911 first responders-there’s a real pattern throughout history where people forget about their veterans after the fighting is done. And now that’s in star wars.
