Bad Furniture Repair and How to Fix It - Woodworking Restoration

Please don’t repair a piece of furniture without knowing how to fix it properly. This bad furniture repair took more time to fix that it would have the first time. See how to undo this bad furniture repair and learn how to fix it the right way. If you don’t, you could permanently ruin the furniture so it can’t be repaired and the parts would have to be replaced.

Watch Scott take apart this bad furniture repair - a chair with a broken chair leg that was poorly repaired. The chair leg was held in place with some construction adhesive and brad nails. It might have looked like it was strong enough, but chairs get pushing use, and this didn’t stand up. Because chairs have a lot of shifting wight on them, they’re stressed and can sometimes fail. This bad repair was done by someone who didn’t take the time to learn how to do it the right way (i.e., look it up on KZfaq and find someone who can show you how to fix it).
The first step is to gently take apart the furniture parts. This wasn’t easy given how it was put together, but the best tool to help take furniture apart is the spreader clamp. These gently put pressure on the parts to release the joints. Here’s a link if you’re looking to buy some - amzn.to/3bFv0Pz
The next step is to clean all the old glue off the parts because we need bare wood for wood glue to work properly. Once the parts are cleaned up, it’s a matter of test fitting the parts to ensure there’s a good fit before applying the glue and clamps. In this repair, there were some wood fibres that needed to be aligned to get the best possible fit. When choosing a glue, you need the right glue for the job. Scott uses 6 different glues (see video link above for more detail) in the workshop and for this project, he chose wood glue and epoxy.
Once the piece is put back together, you may have holes or cracks that need to be filled and stained. Wax sticks and stain markers are easy to use as long as you match them appropriately. See the techniques Scott uses to make all this happen.

A quick tip for reinforcing the fracture due to weak grain structure. Once you've made the repair to the leg, bore a hole from the top (the style of leg will dictate what diameter and how deep) and glue and insert a dowel into the hole. I typically I prefer a 3/4" oak or maple dowel. This ties the broken pieces together with more of the good meat of the leg, and gives the screw something more to grab into. Keep up the good work.

Born in South Louisiana, lived most of my adult life in East Texas. Have now moved to the Philippines and am living on a fairly remote island. 2 hour boat ride into Cebu City, the nearest large city. As it is in the US, travel restrictions and restrictions in place, and doubly so for me as I am in my 60's and our rules here keep me fairly close to home. Enjoy watching your methods, as they mimic my thoughts as well on your methods of repair.

Houston, Texas, I really enjoyed this video. I have an antique table that has been in my family for decades originally from Scotland or Ireland. It was handed down to my mothers side of the family who is from Ireland. It was passed down to my Poppy ( my mothers father) and then passed down to her. Watching your videos has shown me ways of being more careful with the process. I am not a furniture repairman, I am a construction carpenter. I just started dabbling in furniture repair a couple years ago, and your videos are helping out a lot. Thank you brother for sharing your tips and tricks.

If you are repairing furniture that is antique it is likely to be glued with hide glue, this can be softened in the wood joints by injecting methylated spirits into the joint and then left for a half hour or so. Once the joint has been worked apart clean the old glue away with hot water and a stiff brush which when dry will be ready for re gluing. If you have a choice try to use hide or fish glue for the repair as it will help the next person who works on your antique treasure. I was an antique repair man for 14 years before turning to the Superyacht industry.

Hi from Turkey, i am a fixer myself, and i love watching delicate and precise repair work of any kind. Loved your work very informative and delicate. One thing though, if i was making this repair, i probably fill that underside void with high viscosity cyanoacrylate glue. I used that glue on wood and i got very good results, just a thought. I'm from the UK. Other people have mentioned Thomas Johnson. I haven't seen Dasher Designs yet. I watch Paul Sellers and Wood by Wright. I like some of Rex Kruger too. What you all have in common is that you don't waffle! I'm not interested in whether you got your chair from your grandma 40 years ago. Secondly, you supply commentary, telling people exactly what you are doing Aand why you are doing it. Thirdly, where appropriate, you use close-ups. so that we can see in detail what is going on. Lastly, I'll bet you plan out beforehand how you are going to tackle a particular problem, you don't just make it up as you go along. All of which makes your videos interesting as well as entertaining. I've learned a lot. Keep it up and thanks for posting.

Single mom here! 🇺🇸My son has broken one of my favorite white kitchen table chairs twice! Was a cheap “wooden”chair from a big box store but it was all I could afford for a table I restored! I love them too!!! My first repair lasted about a year under some heavy use!! The break is similar to this chair’s and so is the way it is constructed! I’ve been looking for a video just like this!!! I am guessing that if it were a fresh break that would have been possible. Since it was an old, poorly repaired break, people have been sitting on it and crushing the misaligned fibers of wood. It looked to be the case when he showed a close up of the area as he cleaned it up.

preparation....i do several dry runs until its perfect...everything MUST line up.... then when it comes to glue its a breeze......must admit though after someone else has had a go its never any easier!...AUSTRALIA

@@mikehoughton5550 I think at that point you're getting into a restoration rather than a repair, which is going to probably double the time (and likely the price) of the job. I assume this is a piece brought in by a customer.

This is the comment I was looking for. I knew that I wasn't the only one that saw it. I think I would have taken the leg completely off and made sure that it all fit together before gluing and clamping. It would probably work as you suggested too. I used to have my own shop in Alaska.

Pennsylvania, USA. Off hand, I cannot think of any strictly furniture fixing channels. I know Sailrite has a few videos on upholstery. Nothing about fixing wood. Makes sense why I watch your videos. They are informative, clean, well shot and your explanations are really concise. Explaining the reason for doing what you do is a great property of a good video. My gluing technique has really improved since I started watching.

Hi, I'm from Canada. I found this video really helpful, especially the part about diagnosing the problem. I had an antique office chair I had to repair, the foot broke, where the wheel stem was. It was because the grain just there happened to be at the right angle to be perpendicular to the force from the wheel stem. It broke away in a big flake, right along the grain. So I glued the flake back on, & added a couple bolts through the foot to reinforce it. Not the prettiest thing, but it seems to have worked, I'm still using the chair, I think it's around 80 years old or so.

Love the methodical approach and explanation. Still, I couldn't help but notice that the reattached leg is short by about 1/64" of the still-attached leg fragment. You took all that time to clear bent/folded wood fibers that were preventing a mesh between the two pieces, but you applied no apparent pressure from below (mallet or long clamp to bottom of leg?) to close the joint before clamping laterally. Did I miss something?

I think you did miss where he gave the top of the leg a few taps with a mallet before clamping, good point though. Viewing in Australia

I saw the same issue and after the chair was finished it was very apparent the leg needed to be clamped or pounded together. Those interlocking fibers would give it more lateral resistance if they were bonded with glue and forced together.

Pretty work. My Dad was a master carpenter and repaired and made many pieces of furniture. He would be really impressed with your work. I am from Suffolk, VA, USA. You have answered many questions but I still have more. I wish I had interest in furniture repair and making when my Dad was alive. I guess age 69 is better late than never!

It bugged me that the tops of the two pieces were badly misaligned even after you 'cleaned them up'. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbibZZqSqtHRqXk.html It's been mentioned in the comments that a few mallet taps may have been in order. On the bright side, he's got a calm and clear voice :-)

I've had to do that at times, usually preceded by removing the remaining bits of the leg from the chair, or table, completely, repairing the leg separately, then re-attaching to the frame of the chair or table.

UK enjoyed your approach to this problem; working out the reason for the damage and the weaknesses that made it likely to recur. Also the touch-up of the table damage; spotting it and seeing to it as an extra.

ditto. There are no such useful channels in german dealing with that topic. Same goes with woodworking in general. But maybe it's just me with my preference to western style handtools. ;) Oh, I forgot: Matt Estlea and Ishitani Furniture. But they are more the creators, not the repair guys. Matt is more into hand tools, Ishitani is - oh come on, you know him. ;)

Inspired by you and Tom Johnson, I went to my garage to tune up the finish on an old wooden kid’s chair for my 1 1/2 year old great grandson. I noticed that the seat was cracked in several places and decided to take the seat off for gluing and clamping. Naturally with my luck, the cracks were between the sloped corners. Employing my primitive skills (enhanced by watching you and Tom), I ended up using 4 clamps of 3 types (2 “quick grips”, 1 pipe clamp and 1 bar clamp. I used the quick grips for gaining purchase for the bar clamp since it couldn’t grip on the sloped corners. Looks like the glue job might work although I couldn’t completely close the largest crack. When I unscrewed the seat, I noticed that the chair was much older than I thought. The screws were slotted (not Phillips) and patina’d. The wood attaching the legs to the seat frame were oak. The wood of the chair itself might be oak, but the grain is rather indistinct. When the glue has dried overnight, I’ll start working on the finish with light oak or neutral Restor-A-Finish and Feed-N-Wax. Thanks for the inspiration! PS, I’m on the Central Coast of California.

I am repairing a table an elderly woman in my community gave me, it’s a beautiful antique that had been in their family for generations! But her mother had “repaired” the table with spray foam 😮‍💨 took a lot of work to get it all off! Now I need to figure out how to repair the leg correctly, thank you for your videos!!
