Some of you have already noticed that I messed up the AOB setting during this attack. I can´t believe that I made that mistake, but at least now I know, why the torps missed their targets. That I managed to sink a huge tanker despite that error, is even more unbelievable. I got very lucky there. Therefore the title for the Episode turned out to be appropriate in more ways than I intended it to be (the other meaning will be revealed next time)now I

@@Tonci87Hey Toncs, I think I'll take this opportunity to WHOLEHEARTEDLY suggest you get a Type IX (*POST* B-model variant, whenever 'they drop', hehe) as soon as you can, or at *least* as close to the start of Operation Drumbeat as you can, so you can take part in the second 'Happy Times' (and record it for all of us to watch! 😃) Then, after terrorizing American shores, I'd advise hunting somewhere *FAR* away from Europe, and eventually even America, *particularly* as 1943 starts to roll around, judging from some of the horror stories I've heard here in these comment threads about how oppressive Allied air cover and anti-submarine efforts get 😬 Just FYI, U-177, 178, and 179, all Type IXD-2 subs, were historically completed from mid-February to mid-March of '42 - Not sure if that's modeled in-game, but I feel like it's worth a shot for one of the best skippers in the fleet to try and grab one 😉 Now, I know the IXD-2 variants have their drawbacks (mainly that they're HUGE, lol) but they also have some big plusses, too! You will have to wait a little longer than mid-March of '41 if you want a IXC/40 variant, just FYI, though if you're willing to settle for a regular old IXC, they should start becoming available... pretty soon, around mid to late '41, IIRC... Now, *I do want to mention*: I already know what many of you will say - The Type IXs, in general, are BIG. And yes, I know they're kinda pigs underwater, but they *ARE* faster on the surface, by about the same amount, IIRC. The IXD-2 and IXC/40 are even faster, too, by about a knot in the case of the IXD-2. That's not nothing! You also get 8 more torpedoes (10 more in the D-2!), a bigger deck gun (and with more ammo for it in the D-2, just FYI 😉), an extra stern tube, AND, as the icing on the cake... an extra 10 meters of max depth to play with 😙 Also, their underwater speed isn't THAT much worse than the Type VII, IMO, though I'm sure the manueverability won't win any awards :( *BUT HERE'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, GUYS*: It is an established fact that U-boats are *very hard to hit* by Allied aircraft or ASW patrols if they're *NOWHERE NEAR THEM*... which is easy to do if you go and get lost 'in the boonies' in a Type IX 😜 Just my 2 cents, Tonci, for what it's worth 🙂

@Tonci87, quick tip in case you weren't aware, but hitting the crash dive button resets your ordered depth to 70 meters (notice your depth stopped at 70m at 1:14:20 even though you had ordered 120m back at 1:10:00). This is important because if you were truly needing to dive to 120m you may realize too late that you haven't descended to the depth you wanted (and then you'll be in the shit :D). I only use crash dive when I'm on the surface and need to quickly escape from planes; if I'm already submerged I only change my speed using the telegraph or by selecting specific knots to speed up the diving process.

Just FYI, for anyone who might care: Pretty sure that Polish destroyer is either ORP Burza, or OF Ouragan, probably Burza, since Ouragan was... well, kind of a 'lemon', as we'd say here in the States, hehe 😅 She didn't get around much as a result... 🙃 Anyways, yeah, no radar on Burza (at least not yet) and... no offense, Toncs, but I'm glad you missed her - Now she has a chance of becoming a museum ship in Poland after the war, like she did in real life 😀 At least until the Soviets scrapped her... 🤷‍♂️😑

Regarding the Polish DD's. More ships than you might think were able to find safe port in the UK or elsewhere in the early days of the war. The polish crews were also notoriously aggressive and zealous in their attacks, to the point of being (perhaps) reckless. In spite of the relative small number of them, those crews were often cited for their bravery and engagements in battle, making some allied leaders assume their were more of polish ships than there actually were. Same goes for the polish pilots who flew in the Battle of Britain. A very good (and entertaining) channel for naval history can be found under Drachinifel - he had an episode that covered the various navies in exile in ww2 and also covered the polish fleet and even mentions the names of the destroyers that served .They had some great names for their destroyers! He also covers Uboots of course : )

You have became my favorite now and YES, you must play this more often so we get more of this excellent story. I have a rule to always set up a emergency damage control team asap after emergency dive. It makes life a lot easier. I highlight the different compartment and right click men to move them faster instead of dragging them. Some fat targets you had there but you better go under and attack while you have the chance, because it will be harder, much harder the closer 1945 you'll come. Keep calm and dry and carry on.

Same here as to practically shouting at the screen. Personally, I've never had much luck approaching convoys on the surface in SHIII. I always seem to get spotted. When Tonci was in such a favorable firing position with a big, fat tanker in front of him, I was like "Take the shot! TAKE THE GD SHOT!!!". Then the star shell popped... The stray torpedo hitting a tanker was a huge stroke of luck. I've had that happen, but it's rare.

Indeed Captain, you need a min of 2 knots to keep the boat at a starionary depth, at least up to 180. I haven't dared try to dive deeper than that. True, the uboat is hard to see, but just as you can see them, they can still see you. Unfortunately, allied optics are just as good as ours and you were very close. Honestly, it is possible they heard the engines, not sure if you were on electric at that point or not. Perhaps sonar operators caught a sound, but that I seriously doubt. Unfortunately uboat exploits at this time leads to anything possibly suspicious to convoys for them to freak out.

Apologies for watching this a bit late But I noticed something at the beginning that bears mentioning I couldn't help but notice in the upper left-hand corner was Orion the hunter watching your U-Boat glide through the night. Either this was a stroke of genius on your part (which I truly believe) or a sign of your U-Boats true nature (The Hunter and the night). Either way it was brilliant to watch.

The detroyerd is likely to be the OF Ouragan. Bourrasque was a class of French destroyers. The Ouragan escaped to Britain at the fall of France, was loaned to Poland until mid 1940 and returned to the Free French after. Although, the ships of the Polish flotilla serving in the Royal Navy, would usually receive British HMS... designations and carry the British Naval Ensign. (Although i do not know that detail specifically for the Ouragan and it's possible that - given the early and chaotic phase of the war we are looking at - that she actually sailed under the polish flag).

The deck awash submarine in the night is hard to spot, but you know what's harder to spot? A periscope in the night! You were already inside a slow moving convoy - you didn't need those diesel engines. I absolutely do not trust my stealth on the surface. If I were you, I'd have dived at least a few minutes before you got detected, and I'd switch to silent running for a good measure. I won't even talk about the AOB disaster; I don't even know how you didn't notice it was wrong, especially when switching AOB around for aft tube shot.

Convoys usually go about like 5-15 knots range. 15 knot means (High vulnerable ships like troop transports or even ocean liners). If I wanted to get speed of the convoy I used knots in km/h because it is very overkill for me. 26:54 This is a good lesson right there. Always get under the water because it doesn’t matter what kind because destroyers will rush at you.

Regarding the detection, I don't know how realistic it is in this mod but could be the outlook on the freighter next to you heard your diesels or picked up the smoke or the wake on your conning tower. Frankly, you were pretty close. Even if one of the warships was equipped with the simplest radar, they could've picked you up. I think real commanders usually switched to electric engines during surface sneak up attacks. Unfortunately that's not a thing in this game, even with this awesome mod. If you go any deeper to 8 meters to make them switch to electric, the watch crew will also disappear under deck. Oh well, lesson learned I guess. 🙂
