Film Brain reviews a film that’s a bit like Charade! Except not as good. Season 3, Episode 22.

This episode was originally posted in August 2011, and this re-edited version runs 1m 22s shorter than the original, with the usual cuts to film clips and tightening up the pacing. This re-post is obviously to tie into the new version of Murder on the Orient Express, where Johnny Depp takes another fateful train journey. I've always really liked this episode, and I hope you do too!

Actual quote is, "I saw the script and said, find someone else but then I saw the paycheck and thought, I'll do it for the free trip to Venice." Bottom line, actors will say or do anything if the money is right.

I got the impression from the script that Depps character was more interested in seeing if Jolies character was in love with him or the money not to mention he had spent so much time pretending to be the friend and employee of the mobster that she never really got to know the real him to begin with. When they met it was a time of high stress where both of them were under the constant threat of death and both had there own schemes and were pretending to be people that they were not naturally. He wanted to see how she would react to an exaggerated version of his normal personality. Kind of like Superman wanting to make sure Lois Lane loves Clark Kent and not just his Superman persona. I am not saying they succeeded it just feels like that is what they were trying to do.

Definitely thought it was kinda cute though, like "I might have a new face but I can make her fall in love with me again." What's also cool is that some scenes can be re-contextualized when you think of Frank is Frank vs Frank is Alex. And holy shit you're right, an exaggerated version of his normal personality. High level financial manager/banker to a math teacher. At the core they both deal with a similar thing, but work in completely different fields and paygrades.

I find this movie a little more interesting if you take it that Johnny Depp's character wasn't actually Alexander, and just used what he figured out about the man and his own math skills to take his place.

Alexander's actions with Elise (i.e., pretending to be Frank even when alone) might make sense if he's trying to confirm that she could still fall in love with him, despite his new face. (Or, conversely, he's trying to see how faithful she will be when confronted with the temptation of "Frank.")

I think 2010 was the year Johnny Depp truly went downhill, with this and Alice. Before, he played actual characters and not every one of them was a weird invention, though Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a foreshadow of what to come. Public Enemies was the last time I liked seeing him onscreen (I have yet to see Black Mass but I heard he’s great in it so good for him). He used to be one of my favorite actors. Now, I’m just tired of him. He’s late-career-Brando-ing it. He needs a few years to get his crap together and do the kind of stuff we loved him for in the 90s.

@Film Brain I have never seen this movie - but just watching your review, and with no screen writing expertise to my name - Even I could have formulated a far better plot twist than the one the film went with... Whats really bad about that though is that you wouldn't really have needed to change anything but the end of the movie!!! AND I MEAN THE VERY END!!! You even pointed out - Rufus Sewell as the Obvious Red Herring - But WHAT A TWIST - Actually, He isn't! and its HIM thats been feeding Johnny Depp Instructions... So teh end has Sewell and Jolie on the boat and because the twist was hidden behind a twist of Depp being the Protagonist all teh way along when he wasn't... You been double bluffed and BOOM - Far Better Movie!!!

I JUST watched this movie for the first time and I was speechless at the end!!! It was so deliciously awful that I couldn't tear my eyes away. I would rewind certain parts just to make sure I actually saw ( or didn't see) what I saw. I was shocked that a lot of film critics actually went soft and kind on this train wreck of a movie! I thought I was loosing my mind listening to the likes of Ben Mankiewicz say it did what it did well. Then I found your review. My sanity has been restored! You mentioned all the LAME parts that anyone with half a brain was awestruck by in an awful way. I must have played that awful, slow motion, rooftop chase, followed by the leap off the balcony into the fruit stand three times... I just couldn't believe my eyes. Then the zero chemistry dance scene was agony!?!? I was embarrassed for them both! This may be one of my favorite "awful" movies of all times!!! And WHAT? It was nominated for a Golden Globe award?? Imissed that whole chapter in movie history. Thank you for this review, my faith in humanity has been restored.

If you think of the film of a 1950's movie in a modern day, it really doesn't seem that bad. But if you account for, idk years of development, cleverer writing, new production standards, and well the 2010s being saturated with HUGE action flicks such as fast and the furious, transformers, aswell as 007. Yeah its a pretty bad movie. But I think the more correct term would be "outdated." aswell as slow.

Oh well, Matt, at least you got to briefly see the sexiness that is Rufus Sewell and his soul stealing eyes. Bad as it is, I probably would watch this if not for Jolie being in it. I REALLY cannot stand her. I can't put my finger on why. Just something about her is like nails on a chalkboard for me. And no, it's not jealousy. I can't be jealous of someone who's french kissed her own brother, slept with a married man, then later was cheated on by that same man - a man with a reputation for not bathing daily. And anyway, it's the same feeling I get whenever I see Benidict Cumberbatch - just find him unwatchable. So again, not jealousy. Just something about Jolie turns me right off.
