little known is why he left DEI. At the end of 2004 they told him, if you don’t make the chase in 2005, you’re gone. So there he went

That's literally not what happened at all, DEI was more than happy to continue to take NAPAs money. However Theresa earnhardt didnt mince words about the fact that that's what was keeping Micheal there. The resources for that team where mainly behind the 8 and 1. So Micheal who'd dabbled in cup team ownership for a few years an Xfinity ownership for a bit longer than that decided hed leave when he could instead of being fired and went to form MWR.

Michael Waltrip was Dale's guy, once he passed away he still won Daytona 500s and superspeedways but as time went on Michael wore out his welcome. I am shocked that NAPA stuck with Michael as long as they did. Michael was terrible on his own as a driver and owner and it showed on the racetrack. The 2006 season was pretty much a stay at Bill Davis for shelter from the storm but Michael soon found himself in over his head with the Daytona jet fuel incident which put him behind the 8-ball as soon as 2007 began.

Evan Williams The Bill Davis partnership wasn't much help though since Dodge had pulled manufacturer support from the team because they ran Toyota in trucks

nascarfan88ta He didn’t really have a choice he had to run for Davis because Chevy kicked him out of DEI once he started talking to Toyota. So he had to go drive for Davis, another guy in trouble with his manufacturer. Dave Blaney was the real victim of this, not Mikey. Then Mikey waltzes over to MWR in 2007 and we all saw how he ran with Toyota until Gibbs came to help. But either way he definitely would not have been allowed to stay at DEI in 2006.

I think Napa kept him around because he was so amusing in the commercials. He had a lot of personality and his ads were some of the best remembered from the time. Even if he wasn't winning races their brand stuck in the minds of people because of his performance in those ads.

The timing of Michael leaving DEI wasn't great, which is why he ended up with Bill Davis for a year before he was able to get MWR into Cup (although they were horribly prepared in 2007). No wonder he had such a bad year in 2006; Bill Davis never had a good Cup team and at that time he didn't have manufacturer support.

@@sorenauto2238 When he released this video he only had just over 50 subs, let that sink in. I was fed this video through the algorithm back in 2018. I knew that he had the video quality needed to be a big channel in the NASCAR scene which was super tiny at the time.

Kurt and Kyle Busch had a bad 2006, Carl Edwards had a sophomore slump in his season, Roush had a tough year as a whole changing that 97 car to the 26 car. A few bright spots was that Jeff Burton ended his 175 race winless streak, Kasey Kahne won 6 races that year, Jimmie won his 1st of 5 championships in a row and Hamlin won 3 races as a rookie in Cup

Nicky D HOW? Mike Skinner never won a race driving for RCR from 98-01. Between 1980 and 2000, the only other driver to win a race at RCR not named Dale Earnhardt Sr was Ricky Rudd back in 1982. Did we forget that 3 RCR cars made the Chase in 2008, 2010, and 2 made it in 2006, 2007, and 2011. Mike Skinner only finished in the top 10 in points ONCE with Dale Sr. RCR was Dale Sr back in the 80s and 90s.

There wasn’t really a fall just the Erin Crocker situation ruining his career at Evernham. And then Tony almost let him stay in a third SHR ride in 2009 but he didn’t have the sponsorship to make it work. So it’s more sad than a downfall.

I feel like if DEI kept Tony Eury Jr as Dale Earnhardt Jr's crew chief in 05 and gave Michael Waltrip a new crew chief in 05 I feel like Waltrip and Earnhardt Jr could have had more success with DEI

Another driver who had a bad luck year span is Sterling Marlin ('04-'07). His last 2 seasons with Ganassi were awful, and his 2 seasons in the no. 14 didn't work out at all. That's just a suggestion for a future "Bad Season".

I can think of a two year stretch worse than Mikey's: Derrike Cope 1998-99. 0 top tens and a ton of DNQs for a team that was 11th in points before he got there.

Michael Waltrip was always garbage for 95% of his career ,his only highlights was his time at DEI and then it was only on restrictor plate tracks

You mean his only career wins? All on plate tracks? I've stopped considering plate tracks full wins or truly indicative of skill, considering Trevor Bayne as many Daytona 500 wins as Dale Sr.

steFPS so Trevor Bayne got lucky winning the Daytona 500 that don't mean he's as good as a restrictor-plate race Series Dale Earnhardt. if you talk to other great drivers like Darrell Waltrip restrictor plate tracks scared him. Rusty Wallace never did good on restricted straight tracks. So it's not like they're that easy like everybody makes them to be.

4 wins, 41 top fives, 133 top tens, and over 41 million in career earnings says he did alright in his career. No one, including himself, ever claimed him to be a great driver. He had longevity and just enough success on the track and with sponsors so he did something right along the way... By the way, the stats I quoted took me all of 30 seconds to look up. It's amazing what people can find with the use of a Google search these days rather than being lazy and taking even more time typing up a question and comment on KZfaq...

for a dude who had such a shitty career, Mikey's worth a few bucks. (celebritynetworth dot com says Mikey is worth 35 million US) I dont imagine he starves very often. All them NAPA dollars hard at work I guess. Poor guy had his wife lave him for another woman. Thats gotta be crushing.

Mike pretty much alienated her during the 05-06 season. He admitted that in his book. They separated in 07 and she started dating Adam Hawthorne.

Honestly, Mikey had a good thing going with DEI. Even though it was falling apart, in 2005 Mikey was given Dale Earnhardt Jr's ride, however he of course did not do much at all in 2005. I do feel like if he would have stayed there, he might have had his last successes there before the organization blew to pieces. Correction: Just read a comment saying he was actually REMOVED from DEI. Oh. looking back on this over a year later, honestly unsure if this is a valid statement or not. knowing me from a year ago, the answer is likely no
