I was there at the Stone, standing to the right of the stage watching Jake shred his guitar in front of a fan blowing his hair back while his fingers moved faster than the notes exiting his cabinets ! Incredible show- note for note!!!

Badlands would have been HUGE if they didn't debut when Grunge was all the rage in the early 90s. These guys and Lynch Mob were KILLER back in the day !!

Their debut came out in 1989. They didn't have hooks, that is why they didn't go far in the age of pop radio.

DAMN RIGHT BRO!! BOTH LYNCH MOB AND ESPECIALLY BADLANDS DIDN'T NEED TO WEAR LIP STICK OR MASCARA LIKE POISON AND WARRANT. THEY WERE "REAL" BANDS. THAT FIRST BADLANDS RECORD JUST KICKED ASS MAN!

Grunge had nothing to do with it. Badlands came in 89', the thing is they were to "70's" , the media wanted Poison, Firehouse, Warrant ....

@@whataboutrob442they didnt have hooks? Dreams in the dark was number one, watch badlands dag the giblets. I get your point, but thats a fact too. A pity Voodoo highway didnt have a stronger impact, since it was crafted with a tighter version of the band and the tunes on it are, pound by pound, the SHIT. And shame Dusk got nowhere, the performances were lightning in a bottle 9/10. They really hit the get heavier button by then and they sounded raw and nastier than ever.

SEARCHED FOR THIS SHOW AND FOUND IT 🙌! I was at this show and a neighbor and friend with Ray then. He lived in the Oakwood Apartments on Barham and Forest Lawn Drive in LA, near the Burbank border while in LA. The Oakwood was party central and host to many rockers as record companies would rent short-term housing for musicians while in town recording. Ray was as friendly as they come, and if you have lived in LA all your life, he would be one of those guys that you could tell came from a more humble and nicer place. He was never arrogant and super friendly, and we had great nightly jacuzzi conversations. He acted like he was just a regular guy (even though he wasn’t). RIP RAY 🎤!

My god Ray Gillan was a super beast of a hard rock singer! Had he been around longer, or somehow earlier in time, he'd be mentioned in the same conversations with Coverdale, Plant, and Dio. Very few of these live Badlands clips out there, but he was always melting faces and his pitch was perfect, very rare for a hard rock singer with that high of a voice. Most singers back in those days were only mimicking a high vocal range by manipulating their voice (falsetto, etc), but Ray was just a rarity in that it was his natural range.

I walked in a club late one night in SC in 1991 and thought , this is one Bad Ass bar band. Then, within a few seconds saw "Badlands" on the bass drum and Jake playing like this in front of 3 red stacks. Being the young guitar junkie at the time all I can say is something like what a fucking treat. The bars stayed open all night in SC so I hung around as long as it took to finally see him walk out in the mostly empty place with "TWO" gorgeous women that walked on either side of him. I approached and could only say Your the best Man. He shook my hand and said Thanks in a almost Humble tone. I know it's a stupid story but the thing is that Jake caught a lot of shit about being arrogant and hard to work with back in those days, But he did take the time to stop and chat with a half drunk kid in a dive down in SC after a show one night. He impressed me as a nice guy and a Blessed Guitar Slinger. Phenomenal !

I drove up to Greenville from Columbia during a workday to see these guyz, only time I ever remember them playing in SC so I was probably at the show with you cats. I was running late and screwed up and didn’t veer off I-26 to 385 and my buddy T-Tom wanted to kill me but we walked in the door just as they walked on stage and it was friggin epic. So worth a weekday road trip and no sleep

I remember seeing Jake E. Lee for the first time when Circus Magazine covered the US Festival in 1983. Everyone I knew looked at those pictures and agreed he was instantly the coolest-looking rock star we'd ever seen. Even more so when we saw the videos of how he moved while seemingly effortlessly flying all over his fretboard. By the time Badlands came out, I was kind of done with that style of music, but the album grabbed me by the throat and stayed in my rotation for the next three decades. He is an absolutely smoking guitarist.

Wow. He was rockin' til the end. I know he was in Sun Red Sun at the time. It's so tragic. A couple of years before Ray died in '93, Magic Johnson announced his illness, and he's alive to this day. Ray definitely had HIV in '89; but alas, treatment had not advanced far enough at that time. Did you get his autograph, I hope? Had you heard the rumors about his illness then?

I actually erred when I wrote months. Memory didn't serve. It was more like a year and a half before he died it turns out. I met Ray and Don Dokken in the same night at the Rainbow. They were both down to earth with me. The biggest mistake was not having a sample of my playing to give them. Oh well. Holly wood was real cool back then. I met a lot of people. Some cool, some not so cool. It was all great though.

Red Dragon Cartel arent a sloppy band by any means. Don't be like that, bro. But i feel u. It's just that badlands was SO perfect that they remain unmatched to this day. They were the Free, Humble Pie, Band Of Gypsies, Terry Reid, Grand Funk, Zep of their time all rolled in one band. God damn!!! Sad thing is how the business of being great musicians has stepped backwards nowadays, not that there arent great players, but who s hiring them, they don't have a place, thats sad. Even Jake, his Kevin Churko friend endorsed him with as many guitars he d like to perform and stuff, but Jake got no game on this era, he was saved only by a labour of love and trust to his talents and no comercial ideas. No serious business man would have green lighted an artist like that. Thats sad. But thats why i'm grateful RDC exists. The tunes are good once i was beyond My bias.
