Lyrics:
(Dreams of gold made me run away that springtide)
(And like a hound he was always there by my side)
(Oh,I was glad for his company, as our dreams of gold grew grand)
Men Kristina, guldet blev till sand
(But Kristina, gold can turn to sand)

Vi slet ont, ja, allt gott fick vi försaka
(We set off, yes, we missed what we'd forsaken)
(Once he begged and he cried: please take me back man!)
Men jag vägrade alltid fast jag tvekade ibland
(I never gave in to him, although I felt the same way, and.)
Åh Kristina, guldet blev till sand
(Oh Kristina, gold can turn to sand)
(He, who was my best friend, he trusted my word, but I didn't though,)
(See, I already knew, my childish dreams, I'd never know)
Över prärien kom vi till en öken
(Over prairies we came into a desert)
Vi gick vilse och började se spöken
(We got lost and saw mirages, our eyes hurt)
Man gör vatten som porlar,
(We heard water that rippled,)
När ens huvud står i brand
(Thirsting like a flaming brand)
Åh Kristina, guldet blev till sand
(Oh Kristina, gold can turn to sand)

(I, who was his best friend, I took him all over land and wave)
(Desert sands have now spread, a blanket over his lonely grave)

Ur en stinkande källa drack han vatten
(From a well that was poisoned he drank water)
(He got sick and he died that night - it was over.)
När hans blick hade slocknat
(The spark faded from his eyes)
Då gled klockan ut hans hand
(As the watch slipped from his hand)
Och Kristina, guldet blev till sand
(And Kristina, the gold turned into sand)
Åh Kristina, guldet blev till sand
(Oh Kristina, the gold turned into sand)

The intonation is what gives color to this language. But Swedish nowadays is changing. It used to have old , expressive Dutch and some French/Walloon. Nowadays it is simplified , cuz for many living in Sweden , Swedish is their third or fourth language. Furthermore Swedes like conformity and use the same recycled sentences , so to keep general and never express to much opinion. Opinions are not appreciated by the modern Swedes.

I think it's really sad that Broadway didn't think the musical fit there. Apparently it seemed that the musical was too sad and gloomy and that not many would be interested in 19th century Swedish immigrants. So they didn't hear the music ?! And what a sad and gloomy thing, The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, they are not so cheerful directly but people love them. And why shouldn't people in the United States be interested in an immigrant story, that is, somehow, the history of the United States as well. I have seen many musicals in my life but this one was for seventeen the best of all. Too bad that not everyone will have the opportunity to hear this wonderful story and music.

Its about a boy named Robert who left everything in sweden together with his friend Arvid for searching for gold in America. His friend often begged for them to turn back, but the Robert urged them on and always made him change his mind. They end up in the desert where they without water walk lost and desperate and suddenly finds a small stinking pond. Arvid drinks the water before Robert realises the danger with it and Arvid dies the same night in terrible pains. The songtitle is translated "The gold turned into sand" The book itself is amazing

@@eatingthat4156 Yeah, but that translation is not really good. When he sings Guldet blev till sand, it is translated Gold can turn to sand, it should be the gold turned to sand. När jag sökte Guldets land, is translated,as our dreams of gold grew grand, It should be, When I sought the Land of Gold. The translation adds a lot of sentences as well, such as -it was over or our eyes hurt, that just isn't in the swedish version. I'm not sure who translated the lyrics but it took many liberties and sometimes missed the mark completely.

It's about the gold rush that happened in America somewhere during the 1800, and how the main character realised somewhere during the trip that it was for nothing, but he didn't want to give up on his dream. Later his companion and friend died out of thirst since the main character didn't want to go back due to his gold fever. "The gold turned into sand" is a phrase explaining the constant search without result.

Deemed too classical and operatic for Broadway or West End audiences. Broadway and West End is more suited to pop/rock style, not operatic/classical. Also, 'Kristina' is best staged in Swedish. There has been talk about an english staged version, but most think it would lose it's authentication, it's soul.

This isn't worthy of Broadway because it's better than Broadway. The best bet would be for an Opera House to stage it in Swedish.

This is a song from the Swedish musical "Kristina from Duvemåla". The musical is based on books by Vilhelm Moberg and the story is about Kristina, who in the middle of the 19th century is forced to move from a poor Sweden where they have had very bad harvests for a long time. Without food and money they move to the United States. There Kristina, her husband and their children tries to create a new life. Peter Jöback, who sings in this video and portrays Robert, sings about how he and his friend Arvid tried to find gold in the states but ended up with Arvid dying. "Guldet blev till sand" means "the gold turned to sand". Peter Jöback is a very successful, swedish, singer and has, among other things, portrayed the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.

The translation in the description is not very accurate. *So I have translated it more correctly:* He came with me, when I set out that spring Like a dog, he followed me close on my heels I was happy for his company, when I searched for the grand Golden Land But Kristina, the gold turned to sand ... We worked so hard, yes, every good thing we had to forsake Often, he cried and begged: "Take me back!" But I always refused, although I was hesitant sometimes Oh, Kristina, the gold turned to sand ... He, who was my comrade, he trusted my word, although I already Saw, that along this road, the thing I searched for was hardly there Over the prarier, we came to a desert We got lost and started to see ghosts ... You hear water that porl When your head is on fire Oh, Kristina, the gold turned to sand I, who was his comrade, I took him over land and ocean The desert wind have risen, a blanket over his silent grave (Very good in the description here though~

@@jenslarsson8686 Absolutely. It depends on what you want with the translation. I have translated for those who want the correct words and meaning from the original song. But if you do a translation with the intent of making the first song in another language, you usually can't do a direct translation. The song will sound weird and the lyrics won't even fit with the melody. 😂

It's a really sad story about the swedes that emigrated to america. This song in particular is about two men who set out to find gold but in the end he who sings had to bury he's best and only friend.

English translation of the lyrics: He came with me when I left in that spring Like a dog, he followed me closely in the tracks I was happy for his company, when I sought the land of gold But, Kristina, the gold turned to sand We toiled hard, yes, we sacrificed all that was good Often he cried and pleaded: "Take me back" But I always refused, though I hesitated at times Oh, Kristina, the gold turned to sand He, who was my friend, He believed my word, though even then, I saw that along this road There was hardly what I wanted to attain Over the prairie, we came to a desert We got lost and began to see ghosts One hears water bubbling, when one's head is ablaze Oh, Kristina, the gold turned to sand I, who was his friend, I took him over land and sea The Desert wind has covered A blanket over his silent grave From a foul spring, he drank water He fell ill and passed away from me that night When his gaze had dimmed, Then the watch slipped from his hand Oh, Kristina, the gold turned to sand Oh, Kristina, the gold turned to sand

Man tappar andan. Man lever.

A concert in minnesota where alot of americans have swedish heritage. Singing about the american dream during the gold rush (1800~) when alot of swedish populace migrated to america, however "gold turned into sand" and his friend died in the attempt, in the song he describes this journey of depsair to his friend's, now, widow. Watch lyrics under video description,

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emigrants_(novel_series) he came to America with his older brother Karl and Karl's wife Kristina. He and friend left farming for gold, but friend died and he is very sick. He tells Kristina what happened and dies soon after. The novel's author = Swedish "John Steinbeck" and the books imo are better than Grapes of Wrath. And I have only read them in English translation, not Swedish. I wish they would stage this musical again.
