Bahamas #3: Weather Delayed in Florida

We departed Williston, FL (X60) after filling up on gas and flew VFR down to Ft Pierce, FL (FPR). Thunderstorms were starting to develop across the state and we made a minor deviation north of Orlando to stay away from them. Orlando Approach was nice enough to give us a Class B clearance to help expedite our flight.
After landing at FPR we had to get our flotation/emergency equipment and file our eAPIS with customs. After completing this and getting more gas, the weather was too bad between us and the Bahamas to get down there before their custom's closed at 6pm. So we stayed the night in Ft Pierce and had a good time. Safety first!

Excellent video. Being a retired police officer had to get use to listening to all the radio traffic and still being able to respond and do things right. You guys have a lot of radio traffic to monitor and you do a great job. Jamie is a big help to you by doing some of the radio traffic for you. Fellow Illinois resident here stuck in the cold and snow, Ha! Enjoy the warm weather in the Bahamas. Fly safe and have fun.

Another spot on video. As a non-flyer I have to admit the ATC chatter makes my head spin sometimes but after watching several of your videos I think I'm starting to pick up on some of it. Actually when I did aircraft engine maintenance runs I had to learn how to talk to the Ground controllers. I really appreciated how you explain what is going on during the flights. On to the Bahamas. Safe travels you two.

Brief moment for Kevin in the restaurant without sunglasses; that’s a first. Another great post, and yes, I too enjoyed the humorous comment. I liked the decision to go VFR to avoid weather with plenty of alternate airports. If you ever get a meet-up scheduled in FL with BaronPilot and Steveo and would entertain taking a 230lb flying Rev, I’ll be happy to split the costs. Alternatively, I would enjoy meeting you sometime in Illinois. Happy flying and enjoy your vacation!

Hey brother, I was glad to hear your an Air Force vet! With that said I too am a AF vet doing 20 yrs and retiring in ‘95. I also did time at Elgin working T&D then eventually transferring over to the 33rd TFW working F-4E’s and then transitioning to F-15’s. So thanx for your service to the greatest country in the world my friend! Thanx so much for your awesome videos! You and Jamie do a great job with them. Cool to learn Jamie is from AK. After being a east coast dude (Pennsylvania) all my life I will be moving to Petersburg, AK in April ‘19. After spending quite a bit of time TDY to Elmendorf AFB doing test and development work there from Elgin I made a promise to myself my last TDY there that Alaska would be where I would eventually retire to. As I said, come Apr ‘19 that dream will FINALLY become reality! Also, after learning you both are controllers it answered my burning question as to why you guys are so good with communications! Anyway, I wish you both Happy Holidays and keep up the great work! In the meantime I will look forward to your next video! PS- Great job with your Bahama’s series!

Had to watch the video a second time. Not because of Jaime's boob sweat comment (although I thought it was very amusing) but because I was watching you use the mixture levers. I have never flown a twin Kevin but there does seem to be quite a difference in the position of the two levers? I love the way that you two get on together and work as a team. Real 'feel good' viewing. 😀 Thank you very much for posting. I am always very pleased to see when you have a new video on my subs page. I set myself the challenge of uploading a new flying video every Friday morning at 7.30 local time but I know from my few comments that some watch me during breakfast and one has even said it helps him commute on the bus into work at the end of the week! Glad you enjoyed the video Tim! I try for one a week as well as that is all I have time to put out. That's cool that you have followers that enjoy watching your videos regularly as well. :) Yes, as James S said, I do keep my fuel flows matched on the engines using my engine monitor that has very precise values. A long time twin Cessna guru tells people they have separate controls for a reason and you can spend a bunch of money to try to perfectly match the lever positions or you can just set them appropriately. I chose to do the later. :) Maybe this annual I'll let the shop see if they can improve it a bit?

The big community beginning about 19:40 is Barefoot Bay in Micco, FL. The St Sebastian river just beyond. We lived in Sebastian just past the river for 8 years. The Sebastian airport has a skydiving operation and a cool bar. Nothing like sitting out there drinking some cold ones watching people jump out of a perfectly fine airplane.

Williston is a great airport. Hangar my Grumman there in the cold months. Nice restaurant on the field too. Ever have a day to spare in FL, y’all should spend it in Cedar Key - one of the last vestiges of Old Florida....shortest paved runway in FL, and no services but a great place to chill.

Learned to fly at Sanford a long time ago. You flew over my house when you made the turn to 130. At the time (1979) there were just 4 runways 18-36 and 9-27 which was 10,000 ft long and the tower would let you do 3 T&Gos in one pass. No longer .

Another great video. Learned 3 specific things on this one...1) You can transition Class Bravo on VFR Flight Following. I thought you had to be on an instrument flight plan. 2) Cloud clearance in Bravo is clear of clouds, just like Class G. 3)Boob sweat is a thing. LOL.
@jamess6656
@jamess6656 5 жыл бұрын
It is not being on Flight Following that allowed him to transition the Bravo, it was that he was ***Cleared into the Bravo**** by ATC. Note that at 13:43 he has Jamie confirm with Approach that they were Cleared into the Bravo, even though earlier it seemed like they were cleared as ATC gave them direction. Need to get those magic words on the tape!
@310Pilot
@310Pilot 5 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! Happy to show a few things you didn't know. Like James said, if you're on flight following just make sure you hear the magic words and you can go on in. Many Bravo's are too busy to allow much VFR activity but lucky for us Orlando wasn't . :)

Man you sure greased that landing!!! Smoooth as glass! I had to chuckle at about 1:55 on the taxiway, I could hear my wife telling me to quit driving with my knees, and wondered what you were hearing when it veered to the left there, I'm betting you definately heard a peep or 2.... I dont know how you guys tolerate the Florida heat and humidity in the cabin before A/C kicks in ! It was obviously uncomfortable, especially for Jaimie (sp)! When my wife and I went to Tampa a number of years ago for the birth of our 1st grand kid, during the last week of July and 1st week of August, it was so bad that even when I went to sit on the patio outside at 6:30 in the morning with the sun directly on me even at that hour I was amazed at how hot and bad the humidity was then, and I grew up spending all of my Highschool years in Central Texas so I was not a stranger to it! Unbelievable! Too bad you werent able to meet up with Baron Pilot and Lucy and Stevo while cruising through but it sounds like sometime you all might meet and that will definately be classic!
@310Pilot
@310Pilot 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice comment Don! It fast forward my taxi off the center line looks worse than it is. :) We we descended to land in FL it immediately got wet in the plane and some of my gauges fogged up a little with all the humidity....I forgot what real humidity was like. :) Baron and I have talked before about getting together...I'm sure we will one of these days.
@donc9751
@donc9751 5 жыл бұрын
@@310Pilot Ohh that Florida humidity is awful! I didn't think the slight angle on the taxiway was any big deal, I just thought of how it would work for me if it were me with my wife in the next seat. I'd never need to worry about it anyway she's already told me if I ever got a license she wouldn't fly with me anyway!

Have great time in bahamas last was there via Chalks(or chaulks) airline sea planes out of ft.lauderdale , not sure if they are still in biz. We just left Williston, FL (X60) not to long ago. Seeing the intro I understand why they suggested to park out front and they would fuel us from the truck instead of the self serve. Jamie had me rolling - my wife's like, "Yep, it must be hot there". She knows ... 😂 I can just see the humidity in the air down there. Sure wish I was in it! Just plowed about 5" of wet, sloppy snow yesterday. Uhhgg ... HATE this time of year up here ... FL blows my mind (like the Midwest) how FLAT it is. Where I've grown up, I can only think of a handful of level areas more than a mile long, aside from the Atlantic coast that are flat like that - of course, that's where we used to drag race 😊. Always a hill to get stuck on in the snow around here (if you don't have 4-wheel drive ... and some storms, even if you do! ). Would love to see you and Chris collaborate on something. I know you guys will get it done at some point. 👍👍 This was a lot of fun! Like a road trip, only WAY better. 😉 Thanks for sharing, as always! Great stuff! Can't wait to see the blue waters. 🍻🍻

Flew into FLL and drove down to key west over a couple of days was really fun in the keys. Did some scuba diving too lot of fun. Key-west was the best had planned taking float plane to Fort Jefferson but weather got bad they cancelled it. We got clipped by tropical storm started up in the gulf never seen so much rain flooded all the streets near the marina. We drove back to FLL from keywest in one day that was bad idea 140 miles took 8 hours just so many slow spots.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have it checked by mechanics yearly and check what I can myself regularly. That is the only weak point of a 310 is their legs if they aren't maintained properly.

Interestingly enough (to me), I had a flat nosewheel tire on landing once...at ARR. Every time Kevin lands on 27, I shiver a little and then see if he makes the same turn off I did. It was a lot more complicated than that, including stopping on the runway, gingerly creeping to the turnoff, and then getting towed in by the FBO.
