@@AndreSomers I was thinking the same thing at first, but then realized I preferred seeing all the teams having a straight forward battle each quali session. It does put strategy on the back-burner compared to before, but those rules were made to mix up the field as the running order got stagnant. We don't need that with these new regs (yet), so it lets us finally see who really is on the sharp end of the field, every session.

@@heretustay This. There were teams intentionally not trying to get into Q3 because they rather start from P11 on mediums than P10 on softs. The old rules were effectively punishing the midfield, instead of mixing up the top.

That lap time chart (1:13) is great. I paused and consumed it for 10 minutes. You can see the soft tyres were immediately switched on, the mediums took a lap to get into their optimum, and Hamilton on the hards was off the pace for 2 laps until his tyres worked. Impressive. Hope to see that chart for more races.

Mercedes most likely will be in the mix. I def want to see Ham get his 8th but it's fierce competition now which is very good for the sport. Max defending his title, Charles going for his first, and George trying to prove his place at the top. Maybe McLaren will suprise everyone the next few races and be a fourth with a shot. Temperatures at night in Barhein are about 26 to 31 degrees Celcius, i.e. a "heat wave" in just about any other European circuit so the track temperatures and it's effect on the race are akin to a sunny European day, not a cold one.
@speeddemon217a
@speeddemon217a 2 жыл бұрын
There might be a bit of a difference with a hot sunny day and a hot night though. Temperatures are measured in the shade in the daytime so the actual heat in the sunlight may be higher. It still doesn't change the fact that Bahrain was still very warm for a European leg of the calendar
2 жыл бұрын
@@speeddemon217a Yes, there is a difference. If it's 26 degrees and sunny, that means that you're at around 35 maybe in the sun and that's why they don't race in the daytime in places where it's 45 degrees during the day. If anything, it's a considerable risk hazzard for a driver to race in such conditions. But if you look at most of the European calender you're racing and around 15-20 degress at best meaning that the average air temperature is almost if not completely halved and that has an impact on both the driver and car performance. McLaren only noticed their brake heating issue in Barhein and not "sunny" Barcelona because the max temperature there was 20 degrees at best.
@KevinReillySV
@KevinReillySV 2 жыл бұрын
Yes but I think it’s more the tarmac temp. Even with the high temps the sun baking the surface probably makes it ridiculously hot even in a uk summer day
2 жыл бұрын
@@KevinReillySV The only real influence that tarmac temp has is on tyres and although that was an issue with drivers trying to choose the best compound for the race. Air temperature and density plays a big role in both downforce and engine efficiency and we see teams adapt their cars to different tracks with this in consideration.

One thing about the "development curve" , Yes you are right teams might be able to find way bigger gains with upgrades, but one thing that people never seem to understand is each team does not start from the same point and no one really knows what concept has a higher potential ... Or in other words you could be the fastest car on the grid but that might actually be 90% of the actual potential of that concept and the team that you are competing against might be only scratching the surface of its potential. Also there are tons of other reasons why one might never actually be able to unlock the designs true potential, be it by overlooking things or simply lack of material or simply not knowing how to get the most out of it. SO ENJOY racing and who the f cares who will be able to unlock or not some sort of hidden performance. just take it in and lets hope we see a battle at the front no matter who it is.

My takeaway at the Bahrain GP. 1. The cars have fairly bad cooling, brakes overheating even if they aren't following behind. 2. The tires are a giant mess. Pirelli brought the 3 hardest compound yet it was quite bad on wear. 3. The hardest compound is USELESS. 4. The Red Wall and Yellow Wall seems to have the fairly similar performance and wear as evidence from Perez(on Mediums) vs Sainz(on softs) 5. Racing is good but it can't sustain as the car overheats.

Verstappen’s attack on Leclerc was also limited by his brake temperatures, his engineers were warning him from an early point in the race. Leclerc also said that he was heading into turn one a little hotter than he normally would have so that he stayed close to Verstappen over the DRS judgement line. Nevertheless it was excellent to see the overtake, re overtake from the two of them. As a Hamilton fan it’s tough to watch him limited by the performance of his car and by the odd tyre choice on his second stint but from the point of view of the good of the sport it was a positive start to the season, a shame to see the Red Bull’s hampered by reliability issues, they kept Ferrari on their toes. Ferrari were definitely good for their 1 2 and Sainz and Leclerc are both humble drivers who are magnanimous in victory. Overall a better weekend than I’d imagined it would be and once Red Bull tie down their reliability issues it bodes well for a good season of racing. A relief that we can focus on ‘22 instead of the farce that the FIA oversaw in ‘21. Let’s have six cars challenging for those top steps eh?

Isn't there also a thing that the wind tunnel allowance will be recalculated in the middle of the season? I do wonder if some teams might actually sandbag a little bit, just enough to keep them behind at that point, but close enough that they could overturn it once the sandbags are out and they get more allocation. After all the prize money is payed out at the end and not in the middle, so there is an objective advantage in overtaking in the 2nd half of the season.

Merc has probably more issues than porpoising. The bottom 3 teams are all using Merc engines. This cannot be a coincidence.
@lukeearthcrawler896
@lukeearthcrawler896 2 жыл бұрын
Porposing is due to low rear clearance. You can get rid of it by lifting the rear a bit. However, this reduces downforce and hence grip (McLaren's issue). You can get more downforce by putting more front and rear wing, but now the car is draggy (Mercedes's issue). Slightly more drag is not an issue IF you have a good PU. However, if the PU is not best in class, you're screwed. You either live with porpoising, or you find some clever way to get more downforce w/o putting more wing on the car. I'm really worried about the Mercedes PU. When Ferrari's PU was weak in 2020, all Ferrari powered teams were struggling. Now it seems all Mercedes powered teams are struggling. Too much of a coincidence to be only aero and car concept.
@AndreSomers
@AndreSomers 2 жыл бұрын
There are more options ofc. You can also improve the suspension so it doesn’t go too low to stall the floor. Or you seal the floor better using vortices so you can ride higher w/o compromising downforce too much. Or…
@lukeearthcrawler896
@lukeearthcrawler896 2 жыл бұрын
@@AndreSomers Thank you for the reply, Andre. You are definitely correct. Each change will have repercussions on car performance, so it's all about optimization. Making the suspension stiffer could help with the porpoising, but it will hurt cornering. Vortices are indeed useful, but their energy and thus sealing capability depends on the car speed, so they don't work in any conditions. And so on. The point is that IF you have a PU that is top of the field, say you have an extra 50 HP or so, you have far more options to get a competitive car. You'll have a much easier time finding a good car setup/balance that works. The weaker the PU, the fewer options you'll have and the smaller your parameter space will be to optimize the setup. Regarding the Mercedes PU, I'm really worried that it's not the best of the field anymore... quite the opposite.
@user-jq6wf1xk5g

@@tobznoobs they are suggesting here that they are running the engine in safety modes, not even touching the power potential that it possesses. You don't have to sacrifice reliability if you keep your power train detuned. You can focus all of your development on extracting all possible performance out of the chassis. Scary fast they are if it's true. I just hope HAAS gets in the top three.

I think Leclerc is a smart driver in much the same way that fellow Frenchman Alan Prost used his intelligence to make the most of his drive. Max let his aggressiveness undo him, but in the end it was the failure of his car and his team mates car that doomed their weekend.

3 points: 1 - it's very funny to see the British struggle against the reality that Merc is desperate to find any performance they can on a car that was born wrong 2 - a heavier car would heat the tires faster, not slower. It would increase the friction between the tire and the ground 3 - Leclerc said at Barcelona that between 3s and 1s of gap the cars are behaving better, between .5 and 1s it's pretty much the same and it's under .3s it's much better. Now that's what we've seen. All of a sudden the car seem to get sucked ahead.

I don’t think in quali RB were faster than Ferrari. I mean, Verstappen was only 0,006 sec faster than Sainz and Verstappen is better than him (I’m a Ferrari fan). If I were to rank teams right now I would go Ferrari, then RB (if the race were 2 laps shorter we would be talking about a 2,4 RB), third place for Mercedes, fourth for Alfa and Haas, Alpha Tauri and at the end all the rest

If you look at their laps side by side, Verstappen was a bit up on Leclerc throughout the lap. He lost out at the last corner and said he made a mistake there. He might have been on pole by a small margin if it wasn't for that.

@@ASJC27 True but in race pace the Ferrari is comfortably ahead. If i recall correctly Verstappen only managed the fight in turn 1 thanks to the undercut made more powerful due to low blanket temp. If you look at the onboard fights Leclerc in the corners was more stable and had better grip
