The Hungarian Grand Prix was weird. Strategies seemed to get a bit loosey goosey. So let's use this opportunity to look at exactly what goes into a race strategy.

Ferrari have three strategists. One who decides when to pit, one who decides which tyre to use, and one who is keeping an eye on what is happening on track. They had a bit of a falling out a couple years ago and are no longer on speaking terms.

You missed the Haas being first to find out just how garbage the hards were to race on due to Kmag's insatiable meatball craving and yet STILL putting them on Mick's car (despite having the extra set of mediums) to ruin his race after a great first stint. It's even more shocking than Ferrari's blunder. Also, AM having Seb hold station behind a slower Lance for ~10 laps, leaving him no time to overtake the hards in front when they finally let him past. He could've gotten both Alpines and maybe even Norris otherwise

Ferrari weren't the only team had horrible strategy today Alpine and Bottas strategy also pretty bad to be honest as they went on hard tyre, while hard had a horrible traction and at lap 66(I think), from being inside top 10 they are nowhere as Alpine was 10-15s behind Norris while Bottas is dropped to 12th(He retired due to mechanical failure) In the end 8th place Alonso only finish nearly 3s ahead of Vettel from being at least 15-20s ahead of him

I listened to a lot of the Pit channels during races and Sebastian Vettel was at some point basically running the Ferrari strategy from his cockpit. Constantly inquiring about weather and track conditions, tire health, track position of other cars and delta times. Suggesting alternative tire and pit strategies etc. He communicated a lot more with his team than other drivers. This in addition to the already high Workflows drivers already have during a race. He sometimes even overrode what his pit wall ordered/suggested him to do usually his idea of a strategy worked out better. You could tell that he didn’t trust his pit wall to make the right calls. Incidents like the one in Hungary show why

The Red Bulls, Mercedes, and Lando Norris looked like absolute rock stars at the Hungarian Grand Prix. 1:50 It’s interesting to think that Horner expected Max to go from P10 to P5 because under those targets both Red Bull drivers really delivered as Max ended up P1 and Sergio was able to go from P11 to P5 whilst still protecting Max’s pitstops from both Mercedes and Ferarri’s on track. Lando Norris gets P7 best of the rest while Denial Riccardo is P15 with zero points.

There's enough of a gap between Red Bull and the midfield that they would be extremely dissappointed to have either driver finish outside the top 6. I think with Ferrari's blunders P3 and P5 or P2 and P5 were well within reach. But getting the race win and a comfortable race win was really a show of force from Max. There's also the question of whether Ferrari would have panicked so much if it weren't for Max's outstanding performance

If he was of a fierier disposition we could see him turning into the Joker in real time week by week. This sort of treatment by one's team breaks an athlete: look at the ironically named Andrew Luck in American football: prospected to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of his generation and possibly in the history of the game, hung out to dry by the Indianapolis Colts, quit the game entirely after only six seasons in the NFL. Great explanation on the tire compounds, one thing though is the working temp ranges don't necessarily linearly go up with compound hardness, Pirelli has tended to alternate high- and low-working range tires in the range throughout history; when the compounds were named (HS-US-SS-S-M-H-EH) the US-S-H tires were low working range and the HS-SS-M-EH tires were high working range (or maybe it was the other way around), and then the softness is built into the tire for its working range. Not sure if Pirelli is still doing that anymore but I would guess they are, to offer a variety of working ranges to teams when they select 3 out of 5 compounds.

Given how bad the Hard were, I kind of wonder how fast a 3-stop with 3 stints of Softs, each about 15-20 laps, and 1 stint of Mediums of about 20-25 laps would have been in comparison to the one-stop, for teams that only had one set of mediums.

Do you think that the better mix of tyres across the weekend with the soft typically being a quali tyre and the hard a good race tyre is more to do with Pirelli getting their compound steps and choices right, or something to do with the new cars? In the past we often saw Pirelli claiming to be very aggressive with compounds but the racing repeatedly turning up boring one-stops. Even with free tyre choice for the Q3 runners we aren't having that so much now.

Ferrari had the chance to have their drivers on different strategies as well, either could have been on the S-M-M strategy like Max/Perez and the other on M-M-S like Hamilton, they instead had both drivers on the same strategy. The situation of Mclaren and Alonso with the hards brought up a very good point. Mclaren didn't have a second set and HAD to factor in the hards since they didn't have enough tires. Alonso used the hards, but they correctly used the strength of the hards, they did a one-stop which is what the hards allowed them to do. But Ferrari with Leclerc, they forced themselves to react to the cars on DIFFERENT strategies than them, and effectively played themselves into a corner when they reacted to Max's 2nd pit. They could have just kept Leclerc out for longer so the softs can survive the 3rd stint, but they wanted to react to Max's pit. They got what they wanted, they came out in front of Max after the pit, then Max just overtook Leclerc anyway since the hards were trash.
@mrdraw2087
@mrdraw2087 Жыл бұрын
True, but because they still had to use the softs, they were going to lose track position to Verstappen anyway, which is not something that's supposed to happen when you start that much in front. It seems Ferrari's Russell-beating strategy left them vulnerable to Verstappen.

That does not add up in any way. If that were true they would've gone long on the 2nd stint waiting for the rain ro arrive, and if they pitted they would have put the softs on for many reasons

I wish there was more mention of Red Bulls brilliant simplicity. Drive up to the back of Hamilton, undercut. Drive up to the back of Sainz, undercut. I'm not a Red Bull fan. At all. Have to tip my cap though, that was so smart.

Great explanation, but I keep wondering why a pit stop takes 3-4 laps on your charts? :)
@Mike-px6pg
@Mike-px6pg Жыл бұрын
I expect the lap that ends with a pit and lap after are both partially completed in the pit lane - obviously slower and off the chart if included. I would've added one more for an outlap/warm-up but adding two makes sence given conditions

Hamilton outpacing Verstappen despite driving a car that's worse in virtually every way is hopefully a preview of the second-half of the season. Max may have already secured a second championship, but at the very least he needs a genuine threat race-to-race.

Would running the hard tires in the beginning of the race help get heat into them with the car being heavier?
@KneppaH

yeah, i think so. Medium, medium soft was the fastest strategy for this race i think.

@@KneppaH depends on which car I think. Obv Max won on S/M/M and Lewis came p2 on M/M/S. I don’t see how swapping either of them would’ve put them in a better position. Then for the Ferraris I think starting on the soft would’ve been better to help them get past George and drive off in clean air. George I think was on the right strat too starting on softs bc he had to defend p1 at the start.
@wiegraf9009

It might but they would be terrible at starting and the car would be even more uncontrollable.
@ericlee6913
@ericlee6913 Жыл бұрын
@James Black I agree that knowing what we know now we can say difinitively that M/M/S was the fastest strategy. That said, we can't judge strategy in hindsight, bc that doesn't exist when the calls are made. The consensus in the paddock pre-race was a possibility of rain later in the race, they have to plan for swaps to inters with that knowledge so track position is as crucial as it gets. I don't know for sure obv but it looked to me like that was Merc's projection bc they also put lewis on meds to start so he wouldn't have to box earlier than the majority of the midfield and end up way behind in the event of an unplanned stop for inters.

Seems like Ferrari didn’t trust Le Clerc to have enough pace to win, so “intervened” with dumb tyre choices.
