The mom get her nourishment from the cord she suppose to eat it off can't keep everything cleaned having children is messy this must be you first set of babies you done very well they so adorable I want to buy one!!!!

tip: try to keep them on their cord until no pulse is felt (on the cord) then cut. It takes about 2 minutes max. This will help with anemia and prevents it from bleeding like crazy. I mean this its how its done on humans so I don't see a problem with doing it on dogs.
