Pilchards are Australia's most popular saltwater baitfish so it's fair to say, if you were to be reincarnated, you wouldn't want to come back as one of these guys.
People can struggle to rig them properly though, especially when casting from shore, as they have a tendency to fly off the hook when launched.
Watch as Sammy Hitzke demonstrates how best to rig half pilchards, while ensuring a natural presentation.

thanks man, i generally use a 3 hook surf rig so i cut into thirds. i usually find that the fish go for the tail piece first.

Yeah I rig mine like that. I used to use keeper hooks but found simple is the best..

G'day Scotty, re the hook exposure, pilchard is a very soft bait, once the fish bites down on it the point becomes exposed, similar to a weedless rigged plastic. If they swallow the bait whole without biting down on it, a strike will tear the hook completely out of the bait and into the fishes mouth. Hope that helps

How can I stop pilchards from falling off my hook Once they defrost.

Keep them frozen until you need them. Only defrost a couple at a time. Keep the presentation straight. Half hitch. You can buy keeper string and wrap it a few times. Don’t bother re-freezing. It’s berley then.
